1. It is a beautiful spiritual experience that in "our" case...
Sarah ,   Jerusalem   (09.09.12)
for singles... has NOTHING TO DO WITH SEX. The male run rabbinate needs to clean up their minds!!!!!
2. These feminists are missing the point
American Sabrah ,   Israel   (09.09.12)
Most mikvah attendants never inquired about my marital status. They assumed that everyone going to the mikvah was being honest and therefore they never thought about asking. Single women did indeed go to the mikvah to purify themselves so that way they can enter the Holy Temple, especially on the eve of Yom Kippur. Since the destruction of the temple, single women didn't deem it necessary to continue this practice. Single women cannot fulfill the mitzvah of Taharat Mishpacha. Only married women have that obligation and therefore they are obligated to undergo a monthly immersion in the ritual bath. Since pre-marital sex is forbidden in Judaism since the beginning of times (as it is in most religions) allowing single women to partake in this ritual would only encourage it.
3. #2 take a course in logic
American-Israeli Jew ,   Israel   (09.09.12)
"single women didn't deem it necessary to continue this practice" That's Ultra-Orthodox "halacha" What a laugher. Diminishing from Tora is forbidden (Dt. 13.1) You and the rabbinate are promoting chilul hashem Israel needs to eliminate the stumblingblock Rabbinate
4. Voodoo
Sagi   (09.09.12)
Mikveh = voodoo. How strange. Pre marital sex is forbidden but extra marital sex is permitted.
5. so single men can take the dip but single women can't?
Sarita Montiel ,   Israel   (09.09.12)
really single religious men go to mikveh in Israel all the time...so why is it ok for them to go and NOT ok for single women to go?
6. Does the government payfor the bath, in the only democracy i
(09.09.12)
Mid-east?
7. Hygienic stone age...
BidetGo   (09.09.12)
Hygienic question whether the mikve water can be kept bacteria free. Who is testing the water quality? A home bidet is a better solution.
8. Publicly Funded ... Men at the Mikveh Too?
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.09.12)
Will men also have the right to use these publicly funded mikveh's? Will the religious ministry have to justify the exclusion of men? All attendees undress and immerse without ever seeing each other undressing. What justification can by given for the exclusion of men? Is this really about public funding? If a gay couple marries in Canada, can one (or both) decide to immerse monthly without being harrassed by the mikveh attendant? I hope Kolech and the HIgh court will be able to account for this in the process of the inquiry and following ruling.
9. To those that don't believe in religious
Avishai ,   Tel Aviv   (09.09.12)
ritual. It is your right. But to ridicule others for choosing to follow tradition, whatever their reasons, is immature at best. No one is trying to force you to go to mikve. Please. It's time to grow up and act like an adult.
10. Open to taxpayers only
Israeli taxpayer   (09.10.12)
The Mikveh is paid for by tax money. I think that it would therefore also be logical that the women using the Mikveh prove that they or their husband work and pay taxes and that they have either served in the IDF or done national service.
11. Single women and mikveh immersion
Graham Brown ,   Tasmanua, Australia   (09.10.12)
I note the halachic ruling forbidding single women from taking the opportunity fior mikveh immersion and the grounds stated for it. Does the same rulling apply to single men? Or is this another example of women being denied spiritual blessings because they are women?
12. JUST A
jason ,   netanya   (09.10.12)
all it is is a big bowl of dirty water just fill up your bath tub and soak in that, at least you know its clean
13. Well said #3!
Naftali ,   Seattle, WA   (09.10.12)
That was well said # 3. Not to be too bashing but yes they are the breaking Torah by fashioning it and shoving large chunks of meat down everyones throats not realizing that that person would choke to death or have a hard time discharging the waste if they swallow, the only thing they have to do is take one easy bite at a time. They have distorted and perverted Judaism.
14. Its a religious ritual!!!
Jeff ,   Toronto   (09.10.12)
So the riligious decide. Soon they will want to decide what goes on in bars in tel aviv. Let them do as they wish!!! So we do as we wish.
15. #7 and #12
Mike B ,   London   (09.10.12)
You don't really know how a Mikveh works do you?
16. Women grilled on mikveh.
Ana Maria Davison ,   Ra'anana   (09.10.12)
Women are grilled on mikveh because they allow the rabbinate to get away with it. That simple.
17. 15 You haven't see many Israeli mikvaot
Anon   (09.10.12)
That's not a question
18. @17 I've been to mikvot in at least 4 places in Israel
rebecca ,   Modiin   (09.10.12)
Not one has been dirty. The water is treated just like a swimming pool. One time someone before me had been and had left hair in the Mikva - they would not use it until the water had been changed. So Yes I have seen a few Mikvaot in Israel.
19. For those who know no better - women and men go to the mikva
rebecca ,   Modiin   (09.10.12)
for different reasons. Hence the difference in when they go etc.
20. I've never been grilled at a mikvah
rebecca ,   Modiin   (09.10.12)
They've asked me questions iro my cleaning, simply to remind me of what all has to be cleaned - and for those worried about "bacteria" yes a woman has to be ultra clean before entering a mikva. In other places in the world they have check lists in the mikva wash rooms. No one has ever asked me if I'm married, which shul I go to etc.
21. 18 4 makes you an authority? I've seen others not so clean
Anon ,   Israel   (09.10.12)
22. Grilled
Joemoer ,   Israel   (09.10.12)
Woman should be lightly toasted and never grilled
23. It's a Secret!
N. Shum-Ish ,   Toronto, Canada   (09.10.12)
Torture will not get it out of them. But when a sabra in a tank top & hirsute underarms approaches a mikveh, the attendant thinks, "Here comes trouble!" The attendant's in a double bind. Result: panic attack.
24. Seriously?
R ,   Colombia   (09.10.12)
Seriously? Do you really think that young beautiful woman (or old and ugly) need encouragement to do as they please with their sexuality? Welcome to the XXI century (or the XIX) … humans explore, live and enjoy sexuality with or without god’s police having to do anything with the fact. So instead of locking dors and windows why don’t we all just grow up, embrace education, teach some values to our youngster and give up some free condoms so we can keep religion within reasonable boundaries. Stop worrying so much about what people do or do not under the bed sheets and star worrying instead about what we do and how do we behave in the other 99% of our Daly lives.

26. to #2: "missing the point"?
tom ,   toronto, canada   (09.10.12)
where does the torah forbid pre-marital sex? adultery and incest (except uncle-niece, and first cousins) are forbidden, but where does it forbid pre-marital sex (or even polygamy)? nowhere. a man who has sexual relations with an unmarried woman is simply expected to marry her, according to the torah. the rabbinic prohibition against polygamy makes this more complicated, but it is still not technically adultery, and the children are not considered mamzerim, even if he is already married. all of your ideas of "proper marriage" (including monogamy) are customs, many of them from the goyim. the idea that sex without the blessing of the "church" (sic), is sinful, is not found in the torah, and neither is the "synagogue wedding". the torah's language is clear and simple: a man takes a wife. even the rape of dina shows that pre-marital sex, as such, is not forbidden - otherwise, how could the sons of jacob have discussed the possibility of her marrying? (the sin was rape, not sex.) if you don't believe me, sit down with your rabbi for an hour (it's not a simple answer), and ask him a simple question: "who requires a 'get'?".
27. strange contradiction?
tom ,   toronto, canada   (09.11.12)
the purpose of the mikveh is not physical cleaning, but spiritual purity. the immersion in the mikveh should be no less significant for single jewish women, who wish to purify themselves, spiritually, by this means. as pointed out in the article, some (hassidic?) men have a custom of using the mikveh before shabbat and holidays, and not because they cannot bathe at home. on the other hand, it also serves an educational purpose, where the mikveh can and should be a familiar and welcome community facility for even unmarried women, rather than an obscure and unpleasant hurdle before their wedding. somehow the implication that by not allowing unmarried women into the mikve, and keeping them in a state of spiritual impurity, we will protect them from sex, just doesn't sit well - to keep them impure, in order to preserve their purity, is just absurd.
28. 27 Tom - that's about as well stated as I've seen,
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (09.11.12)
especially the last sentence.
29. #22:Being grilled before mikvah
shrinkDave ,   miami USA   (09.12.12)
is preferred to being deep fried, if you are trying to cut down on the fat.
30. Reply to number 5 single men
Danny ,   London England   (09.16.12)
Married women go to mikveh at the end of their cycle to be pure before uniting with their husbands. Men have no requirement to go to mikveh, although some go on Friday or the eve of a festival. Some Hasidim go every morning before praying -- but these are not Torah Law. Only the woman's immersion prior to marital sex is Torah Law.
