1. Buy less or demand imports.
jason white ,   afula,israel   (09.11.12)
They try to squeeze every agora from the consumers. Let all expensive fruits and vegetables rot at the retailers. How many fields were turned into villas and other housing? State agricultural land used for living. No one stops the kibbutzim or moshavim from selling our land to building contractors.
2. Import Them!
froike ,   ny ny   (09.12.12)
I remember that in 1994 there was a similar "shortage" of Tomatos and the price rose. The solution: Israel eased the phyto-sanitary import requirements and allowed the import of huge amounts of Tomatoes. The price dropped quickly!
3. do what I do

I have window boxes which i grow vegetables in. Much better than growing flowers get something you can use and you get to save money.
4. phenomenal prices
Michael ,   Sweden   (09.11.12)
I would be laughing all the way to the store if we had that kind of prices here in Sweden. 2-3 grade tomatoes cost about4$ here.
5. TOMATO PRICES IN AUSTRALIA
sarah cohen ,   Melbourne Australia   (09.12.12)
This week the price of tomatoes in Australia ranged between $8 and $10 which is about 33 - 41 shekels a kilo. This is what happens when the weather is inclement. Not only in Israel.
6. #4 But in Sweden
max ,   EU/IL   (09.12.12)
your monthly salary is like 5x times higher than in Israel. That's the large difference! Israel = Prices like Monaco, but salaries like Mexico.
7. Stupid reasons for vegetable prices
rachel ,   tel aviv israel   (09.12.12)
Tomatoes are native to South America. They like it hot and dry (except for regular watering). Saying that they are "labor-intensive" is also a lie. Once staked, they can be left alone except for watering and organic fertilizing. One can just as easily argue that ALL produce is "labor-intensive," including fruiting trees. Growers are ripping off consumers, just like they did a few years ago in the face of European worries over contaminated tomato crops that they had to destroy when ours magically disappeared from the markets and the ones that were left were over-priced.
8. That's what they're calling those dyed-red cardboard things?

9. I agree #6 Max, and we just sit by and let

it happen. Salaries nor pensions go up with the rise in food prices....which I also feel isnt justified. We pay 4sh tax on each liter of gas, so this gives so many others a good excuse to up the price. Embargo folks...leave it on the shelves and in the markets, they will soon bring prices down and realise a smaller profit is better than rotting goods.
10. Tomatoes are at 3 $$ per 1/2 kilo ( roughly 18 NIS / kilo ).
Miron ,   USA   (09.12.12)
for the past 2 years around here. Guys, not that we want your tomatoes... don't get me wrong ;)
11. grow in your apartment's garden
Yaeli ,   Bnei Brak   (09.13.12)
I've got cucumber, tomato, hot pepper, lettuce, green onions and more growing in a neglected corner of the garden around our apartment building. People here seem to think that vegetables in the yard would be 'ugly' but after I guerrilla planted them the neighbors have been complimenting how pretty our yard looks with them. They've also enjoyed the cucumbers etc. I've shared out with them!
