I've eaten figs right off the trees in my parents' backyard and I've yet to see any of those dreaded vermin. These rabbis need to get a real job and stop annoying people with this chicken shit. No wonder so many Israelis want nothing whatsoever to do with religion.

I think this is a bit too much, but one should always check figs for worms. We had a few fig trees that ALWAYS had worms in the fruit. A real shame.

We need to reform the rabbinate, put the regular (non ultra-) orthodox in charge. It works all over Europe and US and brings religious and secular people together.
8. figs? worms? did not see any yet
ma nishma ,   modiin   (09.15.12)
I eat dried figs all of the time. I open them and check them carefully. I have not seen a worm in years. As for fresh figs, that is something else. I have not eaten any this year, but they do need to be checked.

Hopefully You have washed it, before eating...! So, please dont forget main rules, they are given for health and well-being! Shana Tova to New York.
11. Do you really want to eat wiggly worms?
Rebecca ,   Israel   (09.15.12)
I just picked some fresh off the tree, two weeks ago. Some had tiny, wiggly, white worms that look almost exactly like the fruit and seeds inside the fig. Some were clean and delicious. But you really really have to look at them WELL!!! I can understand in a catering situation, cooking in large quantity, it would be very hard to check so many well enough, tempting short cuts.

Phil ,   NYC, USA   (09.15.12)
The two ingredients are interesting components of dishes that high class culinary chiefs like to use in their dishes. To resort to this extortion right before we ring in the New Year is despicable. The same way the unions are playing games with slow downs at Ben Gurion! They now want to add these items to the list of special inspections and packaging and jacked up prices. A sad day for the Jewish people cloaked behind religion. The Rabbis in Israel are out of control, and it is a sad situation for all Jews whether they are observant or not! Happy & Healthy New Year to all!

And the gratuitous slanderers and haters, including this left-wing looney website, are wrong.

OK..for those who just want to blindly attack the Rabbinate: For those Jews who observe, one is liable for any vermin he can see with the naked eye. Hence, if you can see it with a microscope, and not the naked eye....most chachamim hold, that one is not chayav for it. If we were chayav for microscopic creatures...we would starve to death. Every breath of air contains millions of microscopic mites...As far as meats, cheese, fruits, and vegetables go....forget about it. Inspect your fruits and vegetables carefully...and zei gezund. Shanna Tovah.

My parents live on Long Island and a lot of people have gardens.....and some of them even have fig trees. But because it can get very cold in the winter, you have to wrap them in burlap to keep them protected. And people also have fig trees in the city. In my old neighborhood in Brooklyn, a lot of Italian families grew them.

I agree with you. However, do you think the orthodox will be willing to relinquish any of their power?
18. Checking for Vermin
NYC Girl   (09.16.12)
Unfortunately, when it comes to food, it's not usually garden pests that pose a health problem. It's the deadly bacteria like E-coli and salmonella..... and they're usually impossible to detect until it's too late.

Totally agree with number one here!!! And as for the worms? UNFORTUNATELY commercial figs are heavily sprayed with pesticides for exactly that reason of possibility of infestation. Many items produced for the Haredi community have to be heavily sprayed. Although there has been some advancement in certain areas of agriculture, where they are trying to prevent infestation with using as little pesticides as possible.
20. Figs and worms

Iff there's one thing worse than a fig with a whole, big worm in it, it's taking a bite and then seeing only half a worm....
21. Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau
Joseph ,   London UK   (09.23.12)
Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau is impeccable and I eat in TA because he shoulders the responsibility for kashrus. I have found insects in figs, although not in asparagus, but that depends on the source. I have been a shomer or mashgiach and some times some vegetables are a problem.
