1. The Market is in bewtween 2 Religious Neighborhoods
LosingItsCharacter ,   Jerusalem Israel   (09.19.12)
For those unfamiliar with the location of the market it is squeezed between two Ultra Orthodox neighborhoods and as a secular I can tell you the market has changed and not all for the good many young people go to the new pubs there and get drunk and worse and as this is the main market for the ultra ORthodox it is an explosive situation. The market stall owners have sold out the traditional market for big money to pubs and and boutiques to the detriment of the traditional shoppers there It is the market owners and the city who need to reasess their future there before a general boycott of the market takes place by the locals.
2. how long will the gouv still allow that?
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (09.19.12)
The haredim are NOT the ruler of israel! They constribute nothing to Israel! They dont serve or work in majority and denie thier kids a good education! When the gouv will start to work for ALL people in Israel instead of favoring the religious extremists!
3. When they're expected to become a majority ? ,...
snag ,   US   (09.19.12)
4. This in name of a "childish superstition" !!!
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.19.12)
5. warmth vrs cold
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (09.19.12)
The manner of these women who try to intimidate others into keeping their view of Judaism is disgusting. They should realize that they cause more people to run in the other direction. They might win more converts if they invited them to sit down for a (free) cup of coffee and roll and then explained in a warm manner what women gain through modesty and what they lose from dressing immodest. Words that come from the (warm) heart enter the (other's) heart.
6. ALL societies must learn to let live..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (09.19.12)
and move on with their OWN life. Coercion doesn t work. Peaceful and friendly face to face discussions might open new perspectives and lead to concessions from both sides..
7. This kind of shameful behavior...
Avishai ,   Tel Aviv   (09.19.12)
This kind of shameful behavior only creates contempt. Contempt for Haredim and for Judaism. These women should try to take care of their own sins and not worry about others.
8. #7 Amen!
American Sabrah ,   Israel   (09.19.12)
As a non haredi but devoutly religious woman, I agree that their self righteous attitude towards non-religious women is doing a disservice to the haredi population and creating a hillul Hashem on top of that. If they are offended by the way other people dress, then they should avoid places where these people go.
9. where's the attack??
david ,   new york   (09.19.12)
the article says that haredi women are attacking people, but the article does not mention any attack, other than these women asking people to dress modestly. perhaps, its impolitique, but i would hardly describe that as an attack. i can hardly imagine that ynet didnt distort this on purpose
10. Fishnets and a feather boa
Aviela ,   Lower Migron, Israel   (09.19.12)
I'm religious, but incidents like these make it very tempting to show up in fishnet stockings and a fuchsia feather boa.
11. #7 Avishai, You are so correct. Contempt grows & grows.
Michael ,   California, USA   (09.19.12)
These "patrol" women have no right telling anyone what to wear, how to look, what to do. Modest dress is a personal choice and definitely out of fashion. My contempt strengthened over time. You wonder what makes up for such irrational behavior of Haredim and you soon give up. Contempt sets in and it is infinite, irrevocable, overwhelming. Unfortunately, a comparison to evil characters in history is unavoidable. To overcome that, it is important to support Israeli progressive moves, to assure Israel survives, to fight religious coercion.
12. That's why I love Chabad.
Susan Kohn ,   Israel   (09.19.12)
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, z'tzl loved EVERY Jew and never attacked anyone. He only spoke in soft tones and offered advice with love and support. This is the essence of Chabad and this is why Chabad is loved the world over by tens of thousands of secular Jews. Anger and intimidation will NOT get these shuk women anywhere!
13. #4 You're calling Judaism a "childish superstition"?
Alex   (09.19.12)
Then get the f*ck outta Israel, you're no better than those lunatics yourself.
14. #13 So true!
(09.19.12)
We need a Chabad-ization of the Haredim!
15. #5
Avishai ,   Tel Aviv   (09.19.12)
I agree with what you have said and I like the coffee idea a lot. Personally I love Judaism, but not the hi-jacked version these people are trying to push on everyone. They are only harming my religion when they do that.
16. Haredi women are main drive in modesty inforcement...
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.19.12)
... The men either don't notice or don't care. It's their wives who are particular and the first to raise a ruckus. This isn't Bet Shemesh. Someone needs to teach these women to chillax, or to find them a better way to spend their time. Jerusalem is one of the last places in this country where coexistence and mutual respect still thrives (most people "outraged" by "scorn" and "derision" are self-imposing outsiders who think everyone, or anyone, is preoccupied with them).
17. Do what the Iranian woman did
Nina ,   NYC   (09.19.12)
Punch them in the eye next time they harass you!
18. the Buddhists in my town act like this too!!!
(09.20.12)
nah...just kidding.
19. Simple Solution To This
Rob Zenilman ,   Maale Adumim, Israel   (09.20.12)
"The haredi woman touches one of her bare arms." Have male shoppers and merchants touch the arms of the Haredi women causing problems. Watch 'em run
20. Reminds me of a funny story...I was out at LAX waiting for
Al   (09.20.12)
a flight back to Montreal, when I noticed a family from Israel who were also travelling to Montreal. There was the wife, the kids and the 'Guy'. The two little girls, were dressed in very cute little modest outfits. The wife was dressed with low rise jeans short halter top with her muffin top spilling over her jeans. It was a sight...The guy just sat there trying to melt into his seat. I sat there smiling...he knew exactly what I was thinking. Oh what some guys have to put up with.
21. Sisters unite and fight these religious bigots
Haim ,   TA   (09.20.12)
its time sisters fight back, a women is free to dress in any manner she chooses, its called personal freedom and those who have a problem with that are free to move to Tehran where they will feel at home.
22. #14 Was meant as response to #12 not #13...
(09.20.12)
23. Not Strengthening Women
Sherree ,   Lawrence   (09.20.12)
This is NOT strengthening women it is accosting them. To strengthen women they might choose to hand them a pamphlet on the beauty of tznius. That might actually have an effect on others. Pushing their noses in other woman's business is not helping others it just causes conflict. By approaching others with a smile and a good manner and offering information instead of attacking and judging as well as barring others from an area they don't own or have no official control over is just plain abuse.
24. Are chastity squads dressed modestly?
Susya Bar Dror ,   Israel   (09.20.12)
Is their underwear (one slip, one garter, one bra, one dildo-holster) clean?
25. 20 Al i have no idea what you were..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (09.20.12)
thinking. Did you think the children should be dressed like the mother,or the mother should be dressed like the children? I think these secular parents send their children in a religious school, where the children have to dress modestly. Some religious schools demand that the parents dress modestly too, to the outrage of the secular parents. Still smiling,Al?
26. chastity force in market
lorraine melzer ,   israel   (09.20.12)
How disgusting to have this occur in a so called democracy!
27. The delma of Machane Yehuda
rebecca ,   Modiin   (09.20.12)
Machane Yehuda has traditionally been Hardei shopping grounds. As Jerusalem opened up non-Haradim started shopping there, and the municipality is trying to promote it as a tourist attraction, reasonably successfully. Problem is most money spent there is still Haradi. If they should be put off shopping there and open their own market, the traders would, by economics, be forced to follow the Haradim.
28. Change the title
Fair and Balanced ,   Cleveland, USA   (09.20.12)
Change the title to: Haredi women 'attack' immodest women That's more accurate. None the less their behavior is obnoxious, and they should be kicked out of the market for good.
29. Better - Learn to say in Hebrew:
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (09.20.12)
And your clothes fail to cover your arrogance! (which is a contradiction of tznius)
30. Fort Lauderdale
Joe ,   Baltimore, USA   (09.20.12)
Of course one's initial response is hostile to the modesty squad, but the truth is that every place has its own red lines. When my parents lived in Fort Lauderdale Florida we used to see women in the supermarkets dressed in bikinis and high heels !!
