1. Never thought I would agree with Meretz
Joel ,   Alon Shvut, Israel   (09.22.12)
As a strictly Orthodox Jew, I am fed up with Shas' antics in shoving premature winter time down our throats, against the wishes of the government and the majority of the populace. Having the Yom Kippur fast an hour "earlier" is a page out of the legendary "chachmei Chelm" dolts. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence knows that it's the same 25-hour fast whether you start at 17.00 or 18.00! Also, it impinges on the joy of Sukkot when you have to return early from your Chol Hamoed day trips at 17.00 because it is getting dark already. The short Yom Tov and Shabbat afternoons decidedly impinge on our oneg hachag. Frankly, the sane, mainstream datiim find Shas to be an embarassment, at best. They don't miss an opportunity to turn off the non-datiim from the beauty of our tradition. That said, I think winter time should be limited to from after Sukkot until after the first Yom Tov of Pesach (so we can start the seder at a reasonable early hour after stars-out, to make it easier for the children to stay up [Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 472:1]).
2. Mano - big deal!
aliza ,   Haifa, Israel   (09.22.12)
Sailing on a Mano cruise in Italy would not passengers expect the time to be Italian time and not Israeli time?
3. Suggestion: Yishai and friends change their clocks for that
Esther ,   Jerusalem   (09.22.12)
day..... The rest of us keep normal time. After Yom Kippur anyone who set them back 1 hour resets them to NORMAL time. 25 hours is 25 hours. Why should everybody suffer?
4. #1
Iris ,   Jerusalem   (09.22.12)
I never thought I would agree with someone Orthodox!! Kol Hakavod.
5. How many of these protesters fast on Yom Kippur
Moshico ,   Jerusalem   (09.23.12)
If they do then they would understand the reason why. And if they decide to may be this country would become a better place. And what are we talking about another 2 weeks or less so what are we really talking about a bunch or Anti religious people.
6. omg
naava ,   jerusalem   (09.23.12)
i can't believe the hysteria over a change of time for 3 weeks...what the hell is wrong with these people? Switching to ST is cruel? abusive? omg.. Iran is shoving nukes in our face and we worry & kvetch about an hours difference in the morning or evening???? Thank God we HAVE a morning..It's our ridiculous reaction to everything that is a page out of Chelm.
7. #4 and 5
mark ,   ca   (09.23.12)
The issue here is not when it's done but why it's done. Minority dictates majority their own terms.
8. Indiana, USA
MR   (09.23.12)
The result of the study showed that electricity use went up in the counties adopting daylight saving time in 2006, costing $8.6 million more in household electricity bills. The conclusion reached by Kotchen and Grant was that while the lighting costs were reduced in the afternoons by daylight saving, the greater heating costs in the mornings, and more use of air-conditioners on hot afternoons more than offset these savings. Kotchen said the results were more “clear and unambiguous” than results in any other paper he had presented Read more at: http://phys.org/news187946326.html#jCp
9. Eli Yishai is the real darkness
Haim ,   TA   (09.23.12)
Never entered his tiny brain that now the general public will have to use more electricity in lighting up their homes, costing the nation billions of sheckes. Still at least His Royal Holliness Eli Yishai and his bunch of crooks from the $h-ass cult will have it easier on yom kippur. My response to Eli Yishai is a barbeque on the beach this yom kippur. Put that in your pipe and smoke it !
10. Really? Darkness falls at the same time...
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.23.12)
... it's just the clocks that change. The difference is an illusion. Maybe some fasters feel a difference 3 days after the clocks change, but it's all an illusion. I thought we as a people were smarter. Just start your day earlier! Where does it end? Having summer time all year round? Why not set the clock two hours forward? Why not three? Seriously.
11. "Meretz activists demonstrated"...
Alex   (09.23.12)
Yeah, Meretz apparently don't have much else to protest about than a 1 hour time change. But the Iranian threat, palestinian terror or illegal immigrants they don't give a damn about. Hypocrites.
12. #6
(09.23.12)
Iran is shoving nukes in your faces? I have not seen one-have you? You are a hysterical exaggerator. Now go and enjoy the sunshine!
13. Clock Change
Roxy ,   Israel   (09.23.12)
The clock change is so stupid to begin with, especially so early this puts our kids lives in danger due to it getting darker just as they are walking home from "after school activities", Drivers don't allow for the chance that there are kids in the street at that time and are not careful in the school zones any more. They don't stop at stop signs and drive faster than allowed. Drivers need to be alert at all times but especially around sundown when the kids are returning from their activities!
14. 'cruel and abusive'?
Joseph ,   London England   (09.23.12)
Does the clock matter more to secular than religious Israelis? Everyone gets an hour less of daylight. Changing the clocks is arbitrary and man-made. America and Europe change on different days; each place has its own system. England has considered 'double summer time' which would cause its own range of problems. Israelis have to decide how they want to do it. When I spent one Yom Kippur in Israel I was happy to finish the Fast an hour earlier.
15. its not about the clocks its about religious hatred
zionist forever   (09.23.12)
The times were due to change in a couple of weeks the real problem these people have is that the early change is being done to help the people who actually fast on Yom Kippur rather than go to the beach for a BBQ. Israel Hofshit, is a pro secularist movement, Meretz want seperation between religion & state and Yair Lapid is famed for his hatred of the religious so hardly representatives of the average Israeli. If Eli Yishai had recommended changing the clocks after Yom Kippur this same group would be in the streets again saying protesting his decission. Its about hatred for religion by this extreme anti religious groups and the clocks are just being used as an excuse to protest against the religious. Anything the religious support they condemn.
16. to no 5 orthodox in Europe an USA fast one hour more so?
(09.23.12)
I also fast and is not a bunch of antireligious is a matter of comon sence. You canot be more orthodox than the othodox of NY or London. Nobody dies of one hour more of fasting. The best example is Tisha Beav. Orthodox fast with daytimelight iin Israel s also a 25/26 hour fast and nobody diies of it. So dont give me the trash that because of one hour we will be a better or worse country. Quit blackmailing people with religion. also the country saves millions in daytime schedule you dont care?
17. If the idea is just to be able to cheat on Yom Kippur...
Jeff ,   USA   (09.23.12)
Then change it for Yom Kippur and then change it back right afterwards... I'd thought the whole point of the fast, though, (or at least as I understood it as someone who happens to do it every year) was that it wasn't supposed to be easy... it seems a little bit lame that people are trying to cheat by screwing with the clocks to make it shorter......
18. Only Democracy in Israel...wishful thinking
Channan ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (09.23.12)
And the Israeli public get dictated to and screwed over once again. Its no wonder, Israeli's living abroad stay abroad.
19. get up to go to work in the dark? not for me
ma nishma ,   modiin   (09.23.12)
True, we have less light in the evening, but at least when I get up in the morning to go to work, I am not getting up in the dark. Do these young Meretz protesters work?? Do they have youngsters they must wake up to send to school? I doubt it. Meretz's problems have been that they are not connected to the reality of life in this country. Realize that we simple working folk like to get up in the morning, not at night!!
20. agree with number 6!!!
wastatime ,   tel aviv   (09.23.12)
they got nothing better to do...
21. A special thanks from the Israel Electric Company
Ruby ,   Modiin, Israel   (09.23.12)
Having to turn on lights an hour earlier in millions of homes will certainly add to the profits of Israel's largest monopoly. Midinat Chelm is full of 'Friers'.
22. wintertime in summer? Must be Israel^^
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (09.23.12)
Well, we all know why thats happening. Bibi has to please his haredim partners! As always they are more important to him as you all are! Remember next time you enter the vote booth! Could help...
23. well stated no. 6
David ,   Alon Shvut, Israel   (09.23.12)
the whole complaint about dst is completely overblown - tit hardly saves any money and is just a tool to be used against religious people. Iran is a much deeper threat than Eli Yishai and until Meretz understands this, they will remain teh useless aprty they are
24. DST
hm ,   jerusalem, Israel   (09.23.12)
We should all refuse to go over to winter time.
25. Fast ending earlier at what cost?
Naftali ,   Israel   (09.23.12)
While it is nice to have the fast end earlier causing fighting among jews to accomplish that does not seem worth while. Having fasted many times while living in the US having the fast end at 730 is not that late to begin with. Like was said in previous comment 25 hours is 25 hours.
26. Chelm Lives !!!
Jake in Jerusalem ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.23.12)
I fast on Yom Kippur. Changing the clocks now means that YK services start at 7 AM instead of a more normal 8 AM. The 25-hour fast is the same 25-hour fast, Einsteins! The fast doesn't "seem" any shorter, either. I have asked around for years and have yet to hear any argument for why DST should end before YK. There doesn't seem to be any real reason! The whole country goes on vacation for Sukkot - and we all get to enjoy darkeness an hour earlier. This is LOONY. And everyone seems to blame everyone else. Shas blames Meretz and vica versa. Chelm Lives!!!
27. @#5 - I Fast
I fast ,   Tel Aviv   (09.23.12)
I fast on Yom Kippur. I know many people who fast on Yom Kippur (who are not orthodox). I still would like some day light when I get out of work, and have no problem fasting for the extra hour in order to get a few more weeks of extra evening light hours Start the prayer services an hour later, let everyone sleep in and then it will be the same. It is selfish to cut short daytime hours so that people can fast less. It's Yom Kippur, I thought it was supposed to be hard...
28. No 5, 6, etc TISHA BEAV is a fast Like KIPPUR and is .....
(09.23.12)
done is lightsaving time here in Israel. So dont look for religious excuses of changing daylight time three weeks earlier. Religious fanatics become stupid and quit thinking with logic. for this purpose TISHA BEAV = YOM KIPPUR Is the same time of fasting. The fasts have different purposes but the timming is the same
29. The Minister of darkness. The laziest Knesset. Burim kulam.
Michael ,   California, USA   (09.23.12)
30. 5 , Moshico , only sinners must fast
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.23.12)
Winter or summer time , the duration of the fast is the same number of hours .
