And don`t forget the precept of "bishul nochri"!
32. Bravo Indian Tiger
David Ashtamkar ,   Dimona Israel   (10.16.12)
People should come forward against these insane acts.
33. Resturaunt Kosher
JeanH ,   USA   (10.16.12)
Notice that it wasn't an issue before...they were considered 'Kosher" and given a certificate; but it is a new regulation.
34. #30 So the world never changes?
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (10.16.12)
Insects don't breed and spread over time? Everything remains just as it was in the past? Specific imports at specific periods cannot be contaminated due to insect spread and bad pest control? I sometimes wonder at this kind of logic that ignores the above realities. It's as if all reality is somehow put in abeyance when discussing "money grubbing Rabbinate" or "money grubbing Haredim" or pretty much anyone some people don't much like.
35. To summarise
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (10.16.12)
The reasons a restaurant may require a hechsher are shmitta. bishul nochri. maaser. terumah. Torah issur on insects. baasur v'cholev. Obviously you can't examine for insects after the veg has been cooked.
36. Well done to the resturant to standing up to these crooks
Haim ,   TA   (10.16.12)
We shall make a point to dine at that resturant
37. Restaurant obigated to study Kosher laws.
BUTSeriously ,   Sydney   (10.16.12)
The assumpion inferred is corruption by Rabbis. This may not be credible if they represent the kosher laws correctly. This is regardless if one follows Kushrut or not.
38. 6 & 7
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.16.12)
For more than 40 years we bought vegetables in "normal" shops and on the market , when we lived abroad . Never seen any bug . Do those "rabbanim check every salad ? every cabbage or broccoli ? That's an impossible task .
39. Rabbanim need money
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.16.12)
Where i lived , years ago there were Kashrut problems because of a struggle between the two communities , the Orthodox and the charidi . What was kosher for one , wasn't kosher for the second one . Years later a person wanted to import Israeli frozen meat . As this meat was Kosher by the Israeli rabbinate , there should have been no problems . But , the local rabbanim could not earn any cent on this , so they declared it NON Kosher . This frozen Israeli Kosher meat was sold in a supermarket , of a big chain , and was bought , even by charidim .
40. Roman , people who use fake kashrut certificates
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.16.12)
or have "kosher" on their window , when they are not , should be put on trial . The same as if someone sells frozen meat for fresh , and other such deceiving activities . Thart's a task for the justice , people should fill in complaints by the police . No pity with deceiving people . I think that there must be a possibility to see when a certificate is fake . And in case of doubds , don't buy there .
41. as bad to eat unsupervised vegetables as pork?!
Nathan ,   Montreal, Canada   (10.17.12)
What an ignorant statement: "...religious jew, it is as bad to eat unsupervised vegetables as it is to eat a slice of pork." With unsupervised vegetables, there is a small chance of an accidental Torah violation. Eating pork is a 100% deliberate violation. If the kosher supervisors were interested in kashrus rather than kickbacks, they'd be telling the restaurant operators how to check & clean, rather than where to buy. I've seen plenty of kosher certified buggy vegetables.
42. 39 Charles Your sources,please.

is also a consideration
45. #7 exactly; also orlah
ahad haamoratsim ,   USA   (10.17.12)
The less someone knows about kashrus, the simpler he thinks it is. That seems to be the case of the owner and his supporters.
46. Number 30. Insects.
Akiva ,   NYC   (10.17.12)
Read Leviticus, Chapter 11. Insects are a Torah prohibition. Some fruit and veg are prone to infestation and must be carefully examined. When a problem seems widespread the Rabbinate will post notices to take care with raspberries or whatever because that season's crop seems to have a problem. American farmers use a lot of pesticide so insects are less likely than in more natural farming as in Europe. Rabbis do not get money for warning congregants to be careful to inspect certain fruit and veg.
47. 38 Charles,Never seen any bug?
ILAN ,   ISRAEL   (10.17.12)
Com,on Charles. The bug free vegetables are treated.
48. to #46 Akiva
Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (10.18.12)
So you think that if a rabbi was taking kickbacks, he would inform you about it?
49. to #13 Lemmings Hotline
Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (10.18.12)
So you're telling us that as you sit there in South Dakota, you have accurate knowledge of which scams the Rabbinic Mafia branch office in Jerusalem, is and is not running?
50. to #27 Don in Chicago
Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (10.18.12)
hey big city boy.... have you ever been UP CLOSE & PERSONAL with what comes out of the waste chute of a mechanical harvester? Have you ever held an animal while it was being carefully shechted? I grew up on a farm; your PETA propaganda may fool the hippy chicks in Madison WI or Ann Arbor or Bezerkely California. It doesn't fool me.
51. 47 , i've never seen you
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.18.12)
Also need to be treated
52. What #7 said
Susan ,   Israel   (10.18.12)
Vegan is not automatically kosher. There can be issues with vegetables (bugs, teruma, maaser, shmita, etc.)
53. 51 How do you know that you have
ILAN ,   ISRAEL   (10.18.12)
never seen me? You don t know who i am. Nothing you say is trustworthy. Including the insect free vegetables in your country.
54. 53 , never seen a bug , so never seen you
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.18.12)
Dishonest "people" [ bugs in your case ] think that everyne is as they are .
55. 54 Charles, see you later
ILAN ,   ISRAEL   (10.18.12)
56. 54 Charles. Look in the mirror.
ILAN ,   ISRAEL   (10.18.12)
57. 56 , something little children can say too
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.18.12)
shows only how smart you are . Poor bug , must be treated with K1100 .
58. NEVER buy "kosher" veggies, their not.
Mickey ,   USA   (10.19.12)
For Decades i had bought frozen veggies from Birdseye. But Birdseye's Hashgacha is "questionable", after all it's, only. So one day, I bought frozen spinich from the Bodek brand here in the USA. Bodek cost a little more than the Birdseye gold, and the quality is a little less than Birdseye plain, but hey, it's really kosher! Right. Well, about a week later, for the second time i bought Bodek frozen spinich... carefully checked leaf by leaf, so i don't have to. But, this time it came with a bonus. A little fatter and shorter than your avarage chopstick, included with the spinich was a nice white worm. Wisky Tango Foxtrot! So, le'me get this straight, they checked for the green colored aphids hiding in the green colored spinich, but somehow missed the big white worm!?!?! I guess, after all, the big white worm is so obvious even a low vision person would for sure see it. These extra kosher "Frummy" products are Bovine Skid. They are low quality, and i more than suspect they are much less kosher than the mainstream product with hashgacha. There is simple no excuse for what i saw. Their process is, at best, simple broken. Given a choice, I will never buy Bodek again. Ever! In the comming months i expect to be in Yerushalaim, and i will Davaka! go to this resturant.
59. 57 Out of the mouth of little children
ILAN ,   ISRAEL   (10.20.12)
comes the truth.
60. 59 , you needed children's help to write this !
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.21.12)
even babies know more than a bug .
