1. Picking and choosing God's intent.
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (10.23.12)
I resent the Rabbi's contention that children growing up with only one parent are miserable. I lost my father before I was 2 and my mother, never having remarried, died when I was 16. Maybe it would have been nice to have had 2 parents, but there is a good possibility that my mother would not have had the time to educate me about life with the natural demands of a husband. As it is, I'm a 74 year old, quite independent widow with well-educated and -adjusted children and grandchildren. A Rabbi should know better than to blame situations and consequences, good or bad, on something or somebody else. My mother drilled into my head that I was given a conscience to discern right from wrong, a brain I'm expected to use judiciiously, and an unknown amount of time which I am not to waste. The Rabbi may think he knows how God created this or that, but how the hell would he know God's mind, reasons and intentions? I do, however, suspect that God is not too fond of the arrogance of religious people of whatever persuasion. If God had meant for us to listen to self-appointed experts, why were all of us given brains? Oh, my mother, a Catholic, also convinced me that God has neither religion nor nationality and she, unlike some other people, never fed me BS that hasn't stood the test of my time.
2. Better to stay silent & be thought dumb
SG ,   Teaneck   (10.23.12)
than to open your moutand prove it.
3. There is an obligation in Scriptures to provide for the
Rivkah   (10.23.12)
children of a concubine or half-wife as well as the children of legal wives. If the sperm donor provides in some way for the child and the mother, then that would not be immoral. The problem is that sperm donors do not do that and put their eternal souls in jeopardy since not providing for your own is a sin HaShem cannot forgive. It is called denying the faith.
4. Donor's rights?
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (10.23.12)
I don't know if I understand the point. Will this sperm donor remain anonymous, never known to the child? Here in the UK I understand the child has the right to know the donor once the child is a certain age. To avoid incest with a half-sibling Reb Moshe Feinstein said it was safer to have a non-Jewish donor. What if the donor wants to be involved in the child's care, what are his legal rights?
5. Site halachah, fine, but......
Andy ,   Washington, DC   (10.23.12)
This whole "the child will be miserable" is a crock. How do you know? Lots and lots of children of single parent familes are not miserable, and lots of children of two parent familes are. Stick to what you know: Torah. This editorializing is ridiculous.
6. what?
MK ,   midwest, USA   (10.23.12)
How dare this Rabbi tell me what I can and cannot do. How dare he say that a child wakes up in the night and calls for his father. Puh-lease. This is exactly what causes strife amongst Jews, it's a real shame he said this. Don't include me in his listeners. If a woman wants to have a baby, then why did G-d invent sperm donation? And egg freezing. This rabbi sounds like he's some tyrannical person.
7. Being a rabbi should be illegal.
jason white ,   afula, israel   (10.23.12)
They get dumber by the day. We can do without them and their nonsense.
8. How about
Someone ,   Brasil   (10.24.12)
lesbian women? "the children born through sperm donation "often wake up at night and cry, 'Father, Father.'" might they have two mothers? What happens, then? This is another question. How about gay men? World is crazy, but babies deserve to be born, and live. Later, a psychologist may try to solve existential problems.
9. What a load of old crock !
Haim ,   TA   (10.24.12)
Sisters if you want to have a child on your own , it ainit no bodies bussiness. A child needs love and support and there is no reason a single mother cant provide that on her own. Dont listen to religious bigots that havent a clue about real life.
10. Rabbi
Leo ,   Canada   (10.24.12)
Extremely religious people, when they are not also extremely intelligent, tend to be so narrow minded, that sound like idiots.
11. No basis for such a conclusion
Jacob Erickson ,   Holon, Israel   (10.24.12)
There are plenty of children with both parents that have it miserable as well. It's not about if a child has 1 parent, a mother and father, or 2 fathers or 2 mothers. It's about how they raise the child that is important. If a woman feels like she wants to raise a child and give it all of her love. That's her choice and I hope she does it well.
12. Pontificating
Sagi   (10.24.12)
to others concerning their private body and its functions is immoral by far.
13. I wish talkbacks had a like button
Debbie ,   Israel   (10.24.12)
I think the first one I would like is #7
14. From the Torah
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (10.24.12)
"Be fruitful and multiply".So if a single woman wants to honor that commandment there should not be any immorality attached to how she wants to be fruitful.
15. # 7 Jason. One step further
Sagi   (10.24.12)
Religion should be made illegal, for the betterment of humanity.
16. Be fruitful and multiply takes priority.
Reuven   (10.24.12)
17. resolvable Halachic difficulties?
Danny ,   London England   (10.24.12)
Why doesn't the article explain the resolvable halachic difficulties? Those of us in the teaching profession know how often boys with no father at home feel disappointed, and we know how often a single mother finds it difficult to raise a tenage boy. An anonymous sperm donation is no replacement for a father.
18. 15 Sagi I guess you think that Israel
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (10.24.12)
without religion will grow higher. You do realize, that is just a dream, don t you? Since... "Though a tree grows so high, the falling leaves return to the root." Malay proverb.
19. It all depends on her use with the sperm....
Ben ,   USA   (10.25.12)
If it's swallowed it may be OK
20. 18 Ora . Religions are the "opium of the people"
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.25.12)
are a "childish superstition" but most of all :are unnecessarry to Humanity
21. 20 Charles Your comments about...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (10.25.12)
Jewish history are facinating. You are a great pro.But when you talk about religion you know about as much as A.Einstein knows about religion. Without any interest to me.
22. Good work Rabbi! Keep making Halacha even more irrelevant
miki ,   tampa   (10.25.12)
23. Be fruitful and multiply...
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (10.25.12)
Was that what my husband had meant? I thought he was yelling it at $100 bills and that he got grouchy, because it never worked :-)
24. How can freezing eggs solve the problem?
Veronique ,   Israel   (10.25.12)
How can freezing eggs solve the problem of a woman not finding a husband? She will not be able to have a child at all if she is older even if her eggs are frozen! And besides who will want her if she is too old? Men prefer younger wives!
25. to # 3 Rivka
David ,   Herzlia,Israel   (10.25.12)
What are you taking about???
26. Ora , 21 . this "rabbi" also said things
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.25.12)
very ressembling to what was said some 70-80 years ago : the women's places are : childs , kitchen and church [ synagogue here ] And , my dear , religions are there for people who can't behave correctly without those "divine" rules . They need the "ve'ahavta et re'echa......" etc etc .
27. 26 Charles Read OpinionDelivery guy
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (10.25.12)
complaining about people who do not behave nicely towards him. Many people need the "Veahavta at Reeha"
28. 25 David: The obligation of males to provide for
Rivkah   (10.26.12)
offspring they are the biological father of.
29. Men's opinions
Chaya ,   London England   (10.27.12)
This sounds like an issue for women, yet most of the posters appear to be men. Why do they think they can speak for women? It's easier for a man to be a once off donor than for a woman to raise a child on her own. Are some posters just there to bash anything said by a Rabbi?
30. Ora 21 .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.27.12)
When you said that Albert Einstein believes in "g-d" , he KNEW something about religion because it fitted your ideas . But when he said things contrary to your ideas , He don't knows anything ! Tell me , is that serious ? What has a SANE person to think about such ideas ? You don't know the extend of my knowledge of Jewish religion , so you're NOT able to talk about it . My mother ZL always said : religious or not , you have to know .... Tell that "ve'ahavta et re'echa...." exist to this guy who spits on a girl , to those women who attack other women at the Machane Yehuda , to those who throw stones at cars , to those who insult police officers . And all this by people believing in the tora . Do you think that religious people are always polite ? That they always say "please" or "thank you" ? That they always let an older person , or a pregnant woman sit at their place ?
