1. Workmans Circle? still kicking??
ma nishma ,   modiin   (10.29.12)
The workman's circle was one of the most rabid anti-religious Jewish bodies to float down the Nile since Cleopatra. If anyone tried to get people away from synagogues it was them and their success is proven by their basic demise. If any one hates religion it is the Workermans cirlce or as Johnny Cash summed it up, with the circle be unbroken by the Lord? If any one was all wet it was the people in da nile.
2. Doomed to extinciton as Jews/ in denial
GateToAssimilation ,   Jerusalem Israel   (10.29.12)
The synagogue was always the "glue" to being a Jew without this instituion there would be no Jews in the world "cultural Jews" fade away into nothingness which is their right of course but they are in denial if they think they or their children will survive as Jews.
3. Religion for believers, Culture for the rest of us.
Michael ,   California, USA   (10.30.12)
For strange reasons, being Jewish has to some people the same meaning as being religious, reading the Torah, going to Synagogues, listening to rabbis, and more ancient stuff like that. Count the heads over the hundreds and thousands of years and see how many "Jews" of this kind have survived. The rest of us have survived through Culture, which means everything else than reading the Torah, going to Synagogues, listening to rabbis, and more ancient stuff like that. There are many, many, many times more of us than of those religious ones. And to us Israel has the true meaning, not something out there in shamaiim.
4. I'm an Israeli, and see myself exactly this way
Tahl   (10.30.12)
A Jew by origin, by culture, by association, by common fate, by the definition of my enemy, by the importance of Israel. Not by faith and religious obedience.
5. #2 I agree with you, but at what price?
Raoul ,   Melbourne, OZ   (10.31.12)
Yom Kippur appeal = $500 X 2 Aliyah Rosh Hashana= 3X$18 Aliyah Succot =3X$18 Haftarah Simhat Torah= 3X$18 Hotel for Kippur close to Shul =$150 Total blew up in pledges over the festivals $1312. An expensive glue if you asked me......
6. #5 Most synagogues have reasonable rates
RealityCheck ,   Jerusalem Israel   (10.31.12)
Many charge nothng like Habad others help those in need with their relgious needs schooling and High Holy day services just check out most synagogue websites. The rates asked by most are little indeed to pay for a Jewish community needs .People always look for excuses not to be part of the community like it can exist on air thats not real life there are expenses teachers etc etc
7. Synagogue post dates first Beit Hamikdash
Eliyahu Konn ,   Rehovot   (12.13.12)
So number 2's "always" is an exaggeration.
