Mark Spitz represented Jews in becoming one of the greatest athletes. That's good enough. He contributed one more outstanding Jewish example to the world in a field that Jews aren't generally involved in (not in recent years, at least). Sports don't compare with intellectual pursuits, for sure, but Spitz still represented drive, talent, and unequaled excellence in his field.

i may be wrong but i seem to remember someone asking Spitz back then about what happened and he seemed totally disaffected as though the incident had no special meaning for him. someone should look at the interviews with him back then something like what does this mean to me? He had no clue
