Think you will find the Emir would not be doing this without the assent of the President of the United States. Surely creating an economically viable Gaza independent from Israel benefits everyone. And as for the electricity thingie the EU have a power station capable of producing more than enough electricity for Gaza's needs, on the border between Israel and Gaza awaiting Israeli permission to be allowed in. Me thinks Israel prefers the current status quo (the blockade is ver lucrative for Southern Israeli businesses) than actually seperating itself from Gaza completely. We need to wash our hands of Gaza completely build a fence and ignore it for two three generations. The only way to achieve a viable long term future for Israel.

For once, Israel tales the sidelines in this story. The real issue is why the emir of the world's richest nation (based on Forbes' GDP p/c) is treating the leader of an internationally recognised terrorist movement as a diplomatic statesman. Humanitarian aid can be sent from afar-- what the emir is doing is making a dangerous political statement veiled by mutual religious practice. Let's hope the other Gulf states aren't so stupid at such a volatile time for the Middle East.
