The U.S. is learning that now. Don't get cocky. Russia put down Georgia's little Israel inspired adventure in a few days, and Georgia will never regain those territories. The Russian navy is built to fight the U.S. and China. They could subdue Israel in under a week, probably 3-4 days.

There is a difference, a missile can be aimed precisely at a specif target. Artillery fire has to "walked" to the target, it can never be precise on the first salvo IDF-Artilleryman who knows the difference

al-Assad has never "protected Israel's border". He was simply smart enough NOT to start another suicidal war against Israel. In such a war, Assad knew that his own army and air force would be severely damaged. Now al-Assad is shooting at Israelis from Syria. Israel can't allow that to happen. If Israel lets such attacks go without response, then these attacks WILL escalate until the only option will be a major war. Israel doesn't want a major war with Syria. So if someone fires at Israelis, Israel will fire back, hoping that this will convince commanders on the ground not to do it again. On the other hand, if Syrians DON'T attack Israelis, then Israel WON'T fire into Syria. So Syrians have complete control over what happens, which is a pretty good position to be in. If your friends want to avoid getting killed by Israeli fire, all they need to do is to avoid shooting at Israelis. Threatening Israel won't make any difference, and hitting back will just draw harsher fire. But none of that matters, because all that Syrians need to do in order not to get killed by Israel is -- not attack Israel! That should be pretty easy.
