Just who do Israelis think will replace Abbas? If no one replaces Abbas, then Israel will have to take over responsibility for the WB leading to defacto annexation, with all that implies. Look, it's real simple. There are far more choices than the two you favour. Want an example: - Close Gaza and West Bank borders entirely, incl. israeli water, electricity, food, medical and whatever we Israelis provide them with (let's see how long they'll make it with their neighboring countries arab friends. I suspect nobody will provide them with anything except ammunitions and rockets). - Declare in front of the UN that this is the status quo and that from this second an attack on Israeli soil will be seen as an attack from a foreign country. - Wait till the first rocket hit Israel again (shouldn't take more than a couple of hours) - Invade, annex and expel. That's just one scenario which may be possible, although it might be a bit far stretched.
