Rav Kanievsky ztl known as the Steipler Gaon and Kareletz or the Chazon Ish ztl were recognised as the two leading halachic authorities of their generation and are still quoted and studied world wide. If you've never heard of them that's a sad reflection on your Jewish education. Among observant Jews they are household names.

You seem to assume Haredim don't join the IDF. Many do join the IDF, even some very 'famous names'. One of the sons of the Gaon Rav Shach was a career IDF officer.
