1. What a loon! No wonder Israel is in trouble
Rachel ,   US   (11.28.12)
2. Why is everything that concerns Gaza
Nick ,   Sweden   (11.28.12)
made Israel's responsibility? How does the new Egypt government explain to its voters that Gaza's border against Egypt is still sealed off? And why is this inexplicable situation a non-issue to all of world media? Because puncturing the Gaza abscess by opening the Egyptian border would make Israel bashing more difficult. Which closes the circle: Making Israel look bad is the only priority to any arab - regardless of how suffering it causes to another arab.
3. Hong Kong, educated and non work shy
Jonny ,   Cape Town   (11.28.12)
It has been suggested a long time ago, nothing new here. Its called the 3 State Solution. However there is ONE KEY FACTOR missing, and one which is crucial to, and makes Hong Kong work. That is having an educated, non work shy popuation which is NOT dependent on the UN for their very basic needs. Hong Kong was built and survives on Trade. Exactly with whom is this enclave going to trade with, and what goods are they going to trade? Gambling as in Macau, I doubt it. Perhaps a Free Trade Zone would be the answer. That is leaving aside the fact that Hong Kong was not interested in destroying their neighbours
4. hamas
spookey ,   birmingham uk   (11.28.12)
so you cut a deal with hamas whos sole aim is to destroy israel , what deluded planet are you from , the only thing hamas understands is the stick ,
5. Its called Upside Down Logic
Tim ,   Brighton   (11.28.12)
Its Hamas who have to negate the Charter and recognise Israel before the blockade can be lifted and Israel recognises Hamas But in any case isnt it rather presumptious to assume that Gazans WILL WANT Hamas as a Government after this fiasco? There have been no elections since they came to power. Let Gazans be heard
6. Israel wont get rid of Hamas, like Nato wont get rid of Talib
Alan ,   SA   (11.28.12)
Hamas is not worth the bones of one Israeli soldier.(?was it Bismarck who said something like that)..The only possible way is to manage their violence. Dont wait until 1000 rockets have fallen on Eshkol and Sderot..Hit their civil infrastructure after the first rocket AND HIT THEM HARD. Stuff the UN.
7. Hong Kong
Albrecht Klein ,   Germany   (11.28.12)
If Hong Kong were ever stupid enough to shoot one rocket at China, it would be razed to the ground.
8. thank you Mag-gen. Gershon !
Salma ,   Palestine   (11.28.12)

11. Refusing to learn from the past
JAS ,   UK   (11.28.12)
Hard to know if Yitzhak 'Jerry' Gershon actually believes the drivel he has written or is just being provocative to elicit the type of response we can expect from readers. (Already a few have contributed). Suffice to say he has either not read or deliberately ignored the Hamas Charter. Those who espouse action based on this lacuna are destined to suffer the same fate as those who ignored Mein Kampf.
12. simple solution
aaron ,   toronto,canada   (11.28.12)
A simple solution,Bibi get up in front of the UNGA and declare that the next rocket that hits ANY psrt of Israel will be answered with 1000 bombs on gaza since one israeli life is woth 1000 arab existance(they don't live they exist) see shalit deal.without recognizing hamas.
13. To: No. 8

Only just now? Go back and read anything you have ever posted -- you qualify for a doctoral degree in blah, blah, blah.
14. To: No. 7
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.28.12)
Different situation. Hong Kong is part of China. The Chinese could claim insurrection. Besides, when the British gave up Hong Kong, they dismantled all their military bases and brought all their materiel home to Britain. The only missiles in Hong Kong these days are Chinese, and most of them are pointed in the general direction of North Korea and, of course, Taiwan.
15. Jonny # 3
Arnold ,   Canada   (11.28.12)
Your points about the real Hong Kong are right on. I think you missed the writers point somewhat. Do not get me wrong. I am pro-Israel and would have preferred the IDF clean house but that is another day if the writers scenario is followed.
16. Salma # 8
Arnold ,   Canada   (11.28.12)
What Mr. Gershon wrote has merit in the fact that it would be a win/win for Hamas to have negotiated a deal with Israel wheras Hamas has total political and military control with open borders and the removal of the embargo. The only thing you should blah , blah, blah, is if the assault on Israel would continue the IDF would go in and blast Gaza apart. By your thinking you want all the land and that is not going to happen.
17. Wrong conclusion Jerry: Gaza wants Hamas, Hamas IS terror=
tom ,   tel aviv   (11.28.12)
Gaza IS terror........... No negotiations, no "acknowledgment", NO Gaza!! Let Egypt deal with these degenerates. Sooner or later wi will have to deal with Shimon's New Brave Egypt as well (in the New, Brave ME). Lokks like Egypt is getting ready to "deal" with us.
18. better yet, drop let us bomb TA for them
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (11.28.12)
and kick all the Jews out, back to NY? What tripe can this former general write. I pity the IDF.
19. Delusional thinking. Like bringing Arafat back from Tunisu
SG ,   Teaneck   (11.28.12)
Occuppy the Philadelphi corridor w/o boots on the ground. Mine it. Declare it no-man's land. Patrol it with drones and kill anyone who enters. Use sensor to detect tunnelilng and bomb the tunnels. Prevent Hamas from rearming. Announce that they can trade with the world and prosper so long as no weapons enter. Maybe they'll learn to be human.
20. Gershon is right
Kenny ,   USA   (11.28.12)
Israel does not want to re-conquer Gaza. Given that, Israel will not and cannot control who controls Gaza. All it can realistically do is what it has done with its enemies for years -- teach them that if they attack Israel they will regret it. Aside from that, who cares what happens in Gaza?
21. #8 Salami - Every time you post
BEN JABO (MACHAL) ,   ISRAEL   (11.28.12)
it's blah blah
22. Almost good.
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (11.28.12)
I suggest again a confederation of Gaza arabs and east Sinai arabs from Wadi el Arish line. Not Hongkong, but Kuwait then.
23. OSTRICH hope! ISLAMISM forces IRREVERSIBLE Israeli victory!!
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (11.28.12)
24. #19
Non-Jew ,   England   (11.28.12)
If the IDF did mine the Philadelphi Corridor, you can bet your bottom dollar Hamas would encourage Gazan kids to play there....
25. to 12

kongfu is th best not the simple .iam with this man in gaza
26. Lets see a few EconomicsPrizes before talking about aHK
Alan ,   SA   (11.28.12)
27. Hamas will be future voters in Palestine Israel
Steven Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (11.28.12)
28. So Hamas should be free to operate?
Matt C ,   Canada   (11.28.12)
Israeli recognition of Hamas would mean that the US, EU and Canada would also recognize Hamas, after all, you cannot expect them to be more pro-Israeli than the Israelis. This would result in Hamas being free to openly recruit members, lobby for political influence and raise funds in those countries. It would also make it much easier for Hamas to conduct secret terrorist activity. This is the reason why Israel cannot recognize Hamas: unless Hamas radically changes its ways, the security and diplomatic consequences would be too high. Indirect negotiations allow Israel to (mostly) avoid these consequences and until Israel makes the decision to retake Gaza that seems to be Israel's only option, unfortunately. Also, no amount of Israeli recognition will ever turn that enclave of Islamists into Hong Kong, what are you thinking?
29. How can IDF operate with such "major general"????
trump   (11.28.12)
30. Solve 2 problems at one time.
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (11.28.12)
It might not be such a bad idea Israel declaring that the Gaza Strip is the State of Palestine and the people there can sort out their governance for themselves. But there's a step that needs to be taken first. I suggest that Israel rounds up all the Fatah and PA cronies in Judea and Samaria that it can be get its hands on and not allow those abroad back in.Then eject the ones apprehended into the Gaza Strip and disband the PA. AND DO IT TONIGHT AND TOMORROW before the UN vote. Then declare the Gaza Strip within its 1967 'borders' to be the State of Palestine, close the border and apply the usual border restrictions that a sovereign Sate is entitled to impose. Bye bye Gaza, bye bye PA.bye bye Fatah, bye bye Abbas. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
