Israel in the end will not decide who amongst the Palestinian Arabs is the popular leader. One can rightfully criticize Netanyahu on this or that,, but I think you are overstating Israel's abilities in this arena. Secondly, the truth is that the people of the West Bank and Gaza are quite distinct from one another. Gazans are for the most part decendants of Bedouin Arabs from the Arabian peninsula, while most of those in the West Bank are city or village dwellers. They are not really of the same tribe which describes why they get along as well as various groups in Syria. Pushing responsibility for Gaza to their ideological soulmates in Egypt is not necessarily bad for Israel, nor is buying time vis-a-vis the West Bank. What is the expiration date of the Hashemite Kingdom? Might things not look different if that regime falls and the Palestinians gain control of Jordan. Look around you. It woud only seem like it is a matter of time.

It would be put into the hands of an international trust made up of: Israel US Palestinian state Jordan Saudi Arabia Abbas wanted it to also include Egypt & Vatican This deal was also going to be presented to the UN for approval before the public was even going to be told about it. As well as the holy places he was willing to give up large chunks of Jerusalem including some Jewish neighborhoods. 5000 - 15,000 arabs would get a right of return and compensation would be paid to those who lost their home. The Jordan Valley which would have put Ben Gurion Airport in range of short range rockets which Hamas have thousands of. Add to that of course Gaza and about 97% of Judea & Samaria. Olmert really was willing to give up everything for nothing so of course he was very close to a deal. Despite the fact he had Obama backing him Abbas has made excuse after excuse to avoid talking to Bibi. Even when BIbi offered a 10 month building freeze Abbas refsused to talk but 4 years later in the west Abbas smells of roses & Bibi is the man who killed the peace process.

We will forever be doomed no matter what way we act, history has proven this time and time again. And why ? Because we are a nation of people that never has been heavy with force. Only this time, the Israeli government could and should have appealed directly to the people of the world since Israel still have sympathy of many people. Instead, acting like Judenrat, Israeli governments publicly covered for the enemy. Allowing Arafat his 'kingdom' while he directed one bloody terrorist attack after another, withdrawing from Lebanon, and leaving allies defenseless; leaving Gaza and allowing the establishment of a terrorist statelet, which Israelis support with electricity, water, medicine, money, supplies.
