31.  Insulting,ignorant and insensitive commentary
Dolly ,   USA   (12.17.12)
I think you should not make such comments when the United States is nothing like you suggest. These comments from those who have no real concept of American life are ignorant and damaging. To use this disaster for a by line is highly insulting, insensitive and beyond disgusting. May G-d forgive you for this.
32. #19 ease of buying guns
yosef ,   williamsburg US   (12.17.12)
"It is not easier to buy a gun than to see a doctor..." You seriously believe this? I have lived in Detroit, Chicago & Memphis and the author's statement (at least in those cities) is 100% accurate & this contry does have a weird gun worshiping culture.
33. Guns are not the real issue
Nadine ,   NY   (12.17.12)
Just wait until they learn how to make those mid-east tyoe suicide bombs. A society that allows for no difference and celebrates the lowest common denominator , promotes economic succes at any cost while downplaying quality foster alienation which leads to the events that are happening on an almost daily basis.. Let;s talk about that.
34. Why don't we examine some...
Belinda ,   Texas, USA   (12.17.12)
History here. There have been guns of every shape & size in MOST American households for generations. What is the difference between then & now? The mass shootings began in the 60's & has gotten worse since BUT why didn't we have mass shootings prior to that? Sorry folks but the reason is that when a nation falls away from G-d, when mothers & fathers are more interested in their own wants & desires than they are how their children grow up, when G-d fearing people compromise their faith & when politicians are willing to bow to popular quotes & compromise what's true, honest & right, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS!!!! STOP COMPROMISING YOUR FAITH AND BOWING TO THOSE HAVE NO FAITH!!
35. 100% correct!
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (12.17.12)
The phrase "sweep everyhing under the rug" is spot on. Whether it's about economy, environment, infrastructure, school results that are dropping, political lockdown or an insane gun culture, Americans are people who live in permanent state of denial.
36. Culture of guns & violence.
Wise Saba ,   Western Negev   (12.17.12)
Americans have a sick culture of guns. No sane person needs to own M 16's & AK 47's unless they plan to start a war. No wonder the world calls the "cowboys", they go around shooting everything up. Sick, sick, sick.
37. the NRA
Madeleine ,   Israel   (12.17.12)
The NRA is a huge body with tremendous clout in America. Together witht the gun manufacturers and supported by the clause in the Constitution that citizens have "the right to bear arms" , attempts to change the gun laws, making it more difficult to purchase a weapon, are almost salways successfully blocked. Basically it boils down to money and power.
38. Nos 4 an 6
Madeleine ,   Israel   (12.17.12)
Nobody is advocating outlawing guns. The problem is that to purchase a weapon you don't have to show any I.D., you don't even have to show a gun license or be of age (21 in the States). As for having a clean bill of mental helath - that doesn't even enter the picture. Make purchase of a gun dependant of having an up to date gun license, the issuuing of which is dependent on that person having a clean bill of health. Why should every Tom, Dick and Harry have "the right" to purchase assault weapons and keep them in his home - for what?
39. For Your Consideration
Sarita Montiel ,   Israel   (12.17.12)
"One failed attempt at a shoe bomb and we all take our shoes off at the airport. Thirty-one school shootings since Columbine (in 1999) and NO CHANGE in our regulation of guns" ~ John Oliver
40. I am not sure
(12.17.12)
I am not sure outlawing firearms is a solution. Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people with a simple car bomb, while on 9/11/01 Al Qaeda killed 3000 people with some box cutters. The most effective weapon insurgents have against British and American forces are explosives, not firearms.
41. Defence?
Valerie ,   Israel   (12.17.12)
To all you Americans who who advocate keeping guns for defence. I would like to ask a simple question. From who are you defending yourselves?
42. Justifying gun use Justifies killing innocent babies....
(12.17.12)
43. #23 David - lets hope its not your kid next time
Haim ,   TA   (12.17.12)
And there will be a next time. I find it rather sickning that you put the right to hold arms before the lives of small innocent children. Next time it could be your loved ones. We live in a country where we can be attacked at any time by terrorist with guns, bombs but here we put our trust in our security personall not some nutter with a gun.
44. Missing the real point
Chopper4 ,   Cpt South Africa   (12.17.12)
This has nothing to do with gun laws, if it were then how come none of these things happen in Israel? It has simply got to do with what is seen around the world. If you want to make a statement, you need to bring people with you...look no further than terrorist attacks and suicide bombings. It is all about how many people you can take with you. If you make gun laws stricter then you will get the situation you have in South Africa...where some gun shops have thousands upon thousands of $ worth of guns and cant sell them and go to the black market instead. The guns will always reach the user in the end legally or illegally. We have lost all respect for our fellow humans...if you do not have respect for your fellow citizen imagine what you are capable of doing to someone who is considered your "enemy". This will continue because US citizens are still in denial. I could go on and on, however I will stop.
45. #42
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (12.17.12)
If you take away the guns from honest people who is going to defend those babies? Who protected the babies in 1930's and 1940's Germany when only the government had guns?
46. Irresponsible
em ,   Ra'anana   (12.17.12)
What condenscending BS. How does the author even have the nerve to write such nonsense like "American's not willing to have serious, painful discussion" about gun control , or that Americans are raising it's children to a 'gun worshipping culture'. Where did she come up with these 'facts'? Did she perform any research before expressing these 'non-facts'. Anyone with real knowledge and understanding about American society knows how long and intense the discussions have been for decades regarding gun control. What a shame that the writer of the article used this tragedy to express her misguided and irresponsible opinion of Americans.
47. To #11 (the Muslim)!
Jake Stone ,   USA   (12.17.12)
Double standards and lies?! How about owning-up to the laughable lie that Islam (a false cult) is a "religion of peace?" Even with our problems, in the USA, I'll put are track-record, for doing good to better humanity, up against the murderous facts of your godless religion! Concerning double-standards, one can just look the UN and the world's Muslim-loving cowards who turn a blind-eye to the evil that Islam is, while chastising an innocent Israel that's only trying to live, in freedom, on the very land (the true God) promised to them?! Well, I have some good news for idiots' like you: Israel is going no where--period! Also, your Islamic cult WILL be destroyed by the true God of Israel.
48. To #6 & #7!!!
Jake Stone ,   USA   (12.17.12)
To #6 first: you're right on!!! To #7: the only primitive thing is your ignorant, liberal mind, and how-so-unbeautiful...it is! You're one of the idiots' who voted for Obama, and his socialistic agenda, which is in the process of destroying MY country! Get- out! As long as NRA folks, like me, are around, you godless heathens' (you punk!) are going to have a rough time--guaranteed!
49. Treatment of mental illness should be the priority
rivkah f. ,   jerusalem   (12.17.12)
It now emerges that the murderer was odd, possibly autistic to some degree & had a severe personality disorder for many years. Yet, apparently, during his years in school no one proposed or mandated necessary medical or psychiatric treatment or a suitable educational/residential facility for him. Even if they had, his parents (later on, his mother) may have rejected it. Certainly, the fact that he lived at home, did not go to work or college & had absorbed his mother's fascination with guns was not good for him and was catastrophic for society. By the age of 20, he could legally refuse treatment, anyway. Since the 1960s, "patient's rights" , 'life in the community"and the closing of facilities for the mentally ill and disturbed have filled the U.S. with mentally ill people who are unsupervised. They mostly are victims of criminal acts and homelessness, but some become perpetrators of mass murder. Guns are NOT the main problem here, it is the failure to treat the mentally ill and, more important, to enforce such treatment. Until that changes, there will be more murders like in Colorado & Connecticut.
50. #39 for your consideration
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (12.17.12)
Most crime, violence and murders in the US are drug-related. The liberals say that making drugs illegal has made things worse and push for drugs to be made legal. The same liberals want to make firearms illegal, even though most firearms deaths are caused by illegal weapons and most firearm owners do not commit crimes.
51. # 32
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (12.17.12)
Yes I believe it. Saying it is easier than seeing a doctor is a ridiculous statement. Unless you have underground connections which most people don't it is much much easier to see a doctor. The cities and areas that have the most crime are usually the ones with the most gun control. The cities and areas with the least gun control usually have less. Ban guns and you will have the same situation we have now by banning drugs. An artifical market will have been created where it is lucrative to deal in them.
52. Madeliene # 37
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (12.17.12)
Money and power usually rule but in the case of the NRA it is self preservation for law abiding gun owners. Nobody hates the misuse of guns more than the NRA or would throw the book harder at people that abuse the right to keep and bear arms. They and the founding fathers intent was to see that we never had a government like Hitlers where only the government had guns. The purpose of the 2nd ammendment is to prevent tyranny and to be a protection to the people.
53. To # 49
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (12.17.12)
You hit the nail on the head.
54. #19, you are wrong
Rich ,   Toronto, Canada   (12.17.12)
The Bushmaster .223 Semi-Automatic rifle was the killer's primary weapon which killed most of his victims. But it's not just the easiness of acquirering a weapon in the US that is the problem. The main problem is that the system which Americans live in encourages and feeds off of violence for profit. This is why the US is the most violent place in the Western World. Even Israel is not as violent. In America there are on average 17,000 murders every year. Israel doesn't come close to this number. Americans will have to change their system and stop teaching their children to be violent if they truly want peace in their own house.
55. To #54
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (12.17.12)
I grew up in Germany where nobody except "The State" had weapons. Do you have the vaguest idea how many more millions of lives, in addition to the best-known 6 million, it cost to change that? You could destroy the last gun in the universe and people would still kill each other. If that weren't so, why the Thou shalt not kill when there were no guns?
56. #54
EM ,   Ra'anana   (12.17.12)
Please support your statement that America is the most violent in Western World. America also has almost 300,000 million people..so comparing numbers with countries that have ΒΌ the population is ridiculous. I also would question your average number of murders each year. It amazes me how many people make up facts and figures just to make a point.
57. #51 gun control
yosef ,   williamsburg US   (12.17.12)
#51 regarding gun control: "An artifical market will have been created where it is lucrative to deal in them." Huh? And there isnt?? You must live around Arcata or Eureka.
58. To # 56
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (12.17.12)
I hate to tell you, but as of a few minutes ago, there were 314,957,364 people in the US, not counting a few million Illegals. That makes the population of Israel not 25%, but 2.5% of our bunch. I wouldn't want you to catch hell from someone for lousy math :-) Of course, one has to wonder why there is so much excitement over who and how many kill whom here, while the much higher percentage of killings by supposedly sane humans in other places seems to come down to just another "oh, well."
59. Yosef # 57
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (12.17.12)
If you want to make something lucrative then outlaw it. If drugs were legal for adults there would be no drug lords because there wouldn't be much profit. We saw the same thing here when alcohol was illegal. I'm not saying there isn't a market for guns now but outlaw them and the cost to get them will skyrocket and criminals will be all over it and crime will skyrocket just like Mexico where the people are living in terror because of our phony war on drugs.

Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (12.17.12)
The story I read said the killer used a Glock and a Sig Saur handgun and that the Bushmaster was found in his car. That in itself doesn't mean it is true but that is what was reported in the article I read.
