1. I disagree on the budget-vote argument
Avi   (12.24.12)
Just because you donate more doesn't mean you should have a greater say in the votes. That would be unfair and break equality for both the smaller nations and the poorer ones, and it is in the charter at the beginning of the article "….reaffirm equal rights of nations large and small…" That said, the author is right about the rest. If there is a view held that the UN human rights council is a noble movement that goes after injustice in the world in order to stand up for human rights then it is a wrong view. It was the general idea for its foundation, yes, but it is little more than a political tool today by an automatic majority voting block of the Islamic and non-developed countries. They use this tool liberally against political rival states while allowing some of the worst human rights violators on the planet to serve as member states in it. As a concept - it is what the UN was meant to be. In practice - a complete and cynical failure.
2. So do you own "UN" from the states which support you.
Jarda ,   Czech Republic   (12.24.12)
Israel, United States, Canada, Czech Republic, Panama, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru and Palau. Really representative organisation.
3. What the self-appointed-for-life leftist secular judges
Chaim ,   Israel   (12.24.12)
in Israel's court do for non-leftist, esp. haredim, the UN does for Israel. Measure for measure.
4. Hey blumey, cut their electric, end farce
mo ,   blumestan   (12.24.12)
5. you gonna reap what you sow
peter ,   tel aviv   (12.24.12)
it is easy to sit on the high chair and judge. But we as a country have to realize that we will be judged the same way as we scream for others to be judged. That many UN organizations are anti Israel is a fact due to the constellation of many Arab nations represented there. But we can not ask for fair treatment if we show the same contempt as those nations. It is ok for Bibi to say he is not concerned by the UN criticism over the decision to build thousands of homes in the territories while o the other hand on the same day lodging a complaint about Hizbollah's disregard for the UN by rearming. We have to stop to measure with two set of scales. Either we want to judge and be judged by one rule or we just go on to flaunt our chutzpah and whenever we need pull out the Holocaust as an excuse. Bibi and all your voters and friends you will have to realize if you want to play with the big boys you will have to abide by the rules or face to be bullied.
6. american fools
aaron ,   toronto,canada   (12.24.12)
As I mentioned previously The americans should stop donating to the UN and ALL MUSLIM COUNTRIES cause with all their good intentions they are mocked by them.Get your soldiers out of their countries and cooperate with bringing them to SECURE ISRAEL'S BORDERS while stopping the radicals from killing the american soldiers.
7. I thinks this says it all. Hope Ed publishes this!
David ,   Israel   (12.24.12)
"The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and former High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson criticized the council for acting according to political considerations as opposed to human rights. Specifically, Secretaries General Kofi Annan and Ban Ki Moon, the council's president Doru Costea, the European Union, Canada and the United States have accused the council of focusing disproportionately on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict." (Wikipedia) Israel is very heavy handed because our survival and the survival of the Jewish people is at stake but as far as Human Rights are concerned we are and angel compared to China, Russia, Syria, Sudan and so many countries that commit atrocities and massacre their own people!

get a life. You and your friends try ruining this country through segregation i.e. all deemed by the idiots who interpret the halacha . If you want to live in a country which enables you to do so and also pays for your chosen life style please go and find another place and don't ruin this one. And please use a dictionary to see that the word leftist is not a swear word. It derives from seating order in various parliaments.
9. UNHRC ignores abuse of human rights
JAS ,   UK   (12.24.12)
This is not only about what the UN Council votes against Israel, it is equally about what they DON'T vote against:- true violations of human rights. This UN body is so focused on Israel that all other HR abuses are overlooked. Hence China can do what it likes in Tibet, Muslim countries can do what they like with their female population, Turkey can do what it likes with the Kurds and Russia can do what they like with everyone else. So long as they are all voting against Israel, no one is monitoring what goes on in their own countries. The only organization trying, albeit unsuccesfully, to keep HRC on course is UN Watch. www.unwatch.org Hats off to Hillel Neuer for trying .
10. Why no mention of the powerful UN Security Council?
esse ,   --   (12.24.12)
When deciding whether the UN is fair or not, why has the author failed to mention the sole United Nations agency that has actual power? Why does the article ignore the United Nations Security Council? Perhaps because the US protects Israel at the UNSC. Because Israel receives special treatment at the UNSC the author fails to mention it in order to futher his biased complaint about the UN. The rest of the world looks at this situation where the US vetoes any and all resolutions against Israel and believes the UN to be unfair in that Israel is allowed to get away with anything. Meanwhile, people like the author of this article try to play the victim by pointing to the completely powerless UNHRC and claiming it is biased against Israel (which it is, but so what? Israel has protection at the UN where it counts.)
11. #8 Look who's talking about defiling the Jewish state
Chaim   (12.24.12)
given to Jews because of the TORAH. The same Torah that commands us Jews to keep Shabbat, eat kosher and other laws from the 613 laws. Shame on you for wanting Israel to resemble a non-Jewish state. That's not why we merited this land.
12. Re: #11 Chaim
Dan Calic [writer]   (12.24.12)
Chaim, Most Jews in Israel are secular, as is the case in the U.S. The vast majority of them prefer to assimilate rather than be distinct, because in their minds being distinct has made them the most discriminated people in history, so what advantage is there? I am not attempting to justify their desire to assimilate, just offering an explanation. For more on this go to Ynet's site and type in "Why Jews Demonize Israel."

Israel EXPECTS to be judged the same as others. But while Hamas, Hezbollah, PA, etc, want to push Israel into the sea and kill all the Jews, Israel builds in land in which they were given control through agreements (this area is also called Area C). They retaliate when attacked, while the arabs have always been the instigators. Etc, ad infinitum. Let Israel be judged as others, and there will be less of a problem. The problem is, Israel is judged differently than any other country. Open your eyes if you dare.

solomon my friend. I do not think I am as blind to the facts as you think I am. I immigrated 20 years ago. I did my service and I live the reality of daily life. Not being told by our dear PM or some smart rabbi what to think. Also not sit in NYC and lament about the wrongs the world does upon Israel. We are the best country in the world but we suffer from an affliction of looking only towards the mistakes others do and forget about the mistakes we do. Especially with Bibi and his stooges and religious price tag friends running and ruining this country.
15. Israel is a scaredy kat
Melissa ,   US of Ara   (12.24.12)
coming. Nobody is out to get you. Booh, I think I made Israel scared. Boohoo now more scared. Wow Israel, you are really paranoid. The UN is the most unbiased organization in this world. Yo just claim so because the UN has your number. Maybe when you decide to make peace and allow Israel to be a Muslim state they won't call you on yur stuff. Boo, scared you again scaredy cats. What a laughing stock you guys are. Maybe if you didn't indiscriminately fire rockets at civilians you wouldnt be targeted. The racism and fascism in Israel and hatred towards homosexuals is worse in Israel than all 24 Muslim countries combined. Maybe if you weren't racist and didn't call yourself the "Jewish state" the world wouldn't call you out. Goodbye
16. The UN is an apartheid organization
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (12.24.12)
Israel is not allowed to be a member of either the Security Council or Human Rights Council yet we are 'judged' by the racists that do. The truth is that over 3/4s of the members of the UN are not qualified to be member states.

solomon ,   bklyn   (12.24.12)
Kol hakavod l'cha for what you have contributed to Israel. (I myself have only been a shlav bet'nik.) I agree and applaud you in your attitude towards the rabbinate and politicians. I applaud your low estimation of 'price-tag', etc. But I still must disagree with you on your comparison to what Israel is doing with what Hezbollah, Hamas, et al, are doing. I must again state my belief that to do as you suggest, would be tatamount to judging Israel and its enemies on two sets of scales. In my opinion, Israel and its enemies are being judged on the same scale, except most pay no attention to where Israel is on that same scale, and pushes Israel to the scale's other side in their blindness.

Israel treats Homosexuals worse than all 24 muslim nations combined? Please tell me your joking. Or stop with the "420" in your email address so much. In muslim countries, most of the time Homosexuals are lucky if they arent tortured before being murdered. Last time i checked Israel doesnt have a policy of murdering Homosexuals. And as for your comment about indiscriminately firing rockets at civilians... another reason why i think you're joking... you just described Hamas. And when Israel retaliates, civilians die, because Hamas hides behind women and children. Israel is the JEWISH State... but obviously conditions are better for the Christians, Muslims, etc... than they are in ANY country nearby... because as long as their faith doesnt involve murder, they are free to practice it freely... in Israel.
19. Re: Gee #16
Dan Calic [writer]   (12.25.12)
Gee, It has been prevailing thinking for sometime Israel is ineligible for a seat on the Human Rights Council. Since they were accepted into the Western European region in 2000, they actually have petitioned the Council for a seat. I believe they will become legally in 2018. Whether they will actually be voted in.....well that's another matter.
20. #15 melissa - congratulations!
solomon ,   bklyn   (12.25.12)
It is rare to see a statement so ludicrous and vile that it is actually more ridiculously vile than most of split's or graczek's! Congratulations on being able to so tightly shut out the real world, real history, and substitute it with such make-believe. You are in horrid company...which you richly deserve.

How many gay pride parades have you seen in Muslim countries? How many gays have you seen hung from cranes in Israel as has been done in Iran? How many babies have had their throats slit by Jews? When you can answer those questions then you can speak to us of blindness. Untill then......
22. Dan Calic #19 wow
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (12.26.12)
After only 75 years we might be allowed to sit in the same room. If that ain't the definition of apartheid then it has no meaning whatsoever. The UN isn't going to exist by then

The "one scale", "being judged" and other of your "brilliant" palavra, is nothing, but just that...Empty, meaningless talk, peter... Bibi is RIGHT !..We all get it.. Both UN and EU are just a circus...Their charters and principals, have been long lost to the "higher bidder"... Do you care explaining, how do we "flaunt our chutzpah"? Yes, we have the chutzpa to live and prosper as a Nation in our own Homeland, the over 3000 year old land of our Forefathers...If that upsets you, tough...A judge could also be judged and vise versa...But when you know, you are doing the right thing for the survival of your Nation, ony our land, everything else is only "palavra".. Are you trying to "bully" us here, peter ? And you really think Israeli boys and girls are afraid of your big boys ? Haven't you learned anything, peter ?
24.  UNHRC
amir burstein ,   United States   (01.16.13)
the article is very clear re. how UNHRC functions ( the muslim countries voting block against Israel, WHILE most/ all of those countries are OPENLY some of the worlds' worse violators of human rights. under such circumstances, it is grossly unreasonable to expect israel to take UNHRC too seriously. by all reasonable, fair- minded standards, this UNHRC situation is, in fact, a joke.
