31. No 6 dear Barbara,
(12.24.12)
if you really live in Israel, you should know that: 1) Israel is NOT a Jewish State (the laws of Israel are NOT Halacha's laws) 2) New Year's Eve is NOT a Christian holiday Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to you Barbara
32. Stupidity and ignorance
Mozza ,   London England   (12.24.12)
I have an easy way to solve this recurring issue. Declare all kashrut superivision defunct. Give them all two weeks notice - to be received AFTER a letter of confirmation has been received form their employers confirming their attendance and full compliance with work regulations, hours worked etc. Let them find a real job.
33. global celebration
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (12.24.12)
I do not 'celebrate' the civil new year'e eve, but even I know that New Year's Eve is the most widely celebrated event on earth. It has no religious significance to those who drink and dance. There is no reason a kashrus supervisor cannot be present in a hotel or restaurant kitchen. Tourists will not understand why they can't celebrate New Year's Eve.

be concerned about Kashrus? Regev and the other guy are just troublemakers to be ignored.
36. Haifa Rabbinate
Mason Morris ,   Oak Creek, USA   (12.24.12)
How foolish. American Christians are Isreals biggest ideological supporters. Hello?
37. Who the .... do the rabbis think they are?
Runner1983 ,   USA   (12.24.12)
To quote from the article: "no parties celebrating Christian New Year's Eve should be held on the premises, and our supervision will be further denied to those who disobey our instructions." Welcome to the theocracy.

Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.24.12)
First it's about the "goyish" calender's new year , calendar USED all over our country . Second , they are not concerned about kashrut , but the rabbinate about this feast . Not better as this fatwa issued in a Aussie mosque against xmas

solomon ,   bklyn   (12.24.12)
#24- Is the Owner of the business a Jew? Are there Jews working there on the Sabbath?. This does have relevance. #29- There are Indian restaurants in NYC that have kashrut certificates from orthodox rabbis. They themselves are not expected to keep Shabbat, as they, nor any of their workers, are Jewish. They do keep the laws of kashrut in that the restaurants are vegetarian, do not serves shellfish, etc.
40. Rabbinate Decision
Brad ,   Lusk, USA   (12.24.12)
It is not hard to understand why the Rebbinate ruled this way..."the nations...living in the land, be careful...not to be trapped into following them; so that you inquire after their gods and ask, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I want to do the same." (Deut. 12:30). These holidays with pagan idolotrous roots but re-purposed for a presumed good are akin to the sin of the golden calf. Christians would also do well to read their Bibles- as it appears the Rabbinate did.

Northerner   (12.24.12)
Of course it is! I wouldn't have mention this if it wasn't because then it wouldn't mean much. As I said before, the place I work is owned by a Jew and employs almost only Jews and has a teudat kashrut even if it opens Fridays and Saturdays. I asked once how was this possible Nd they told me that it's a kombina with the mashgiah. As I said before its only about money and power
43. another example of religion suppressing knowledge
ilan ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (12.24.12)
Israelis, call new year's eve Silvester. named after a pope that is infamous for killing jews! said pope was buried 31 of December 335 A.D. and since the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, the anniversary of his death has coincided with New Year's Eve. Because of this coincidence, several countries, primarily in Europe, use a variant of Silvester's name as the preferred name for the holiday; these countries include Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland and Slovenia. it's a misnomer! the whole world is celebrating the start of a new year, and uneducated Israelis see it as celebrating the killing of JEWS!
44. # 39 You ar a liar
Yerach ,   Jerusalem,Israel   (12.25.12)
No Orthodox Rabbi would give a hechsher to a place that is open on shabbat & has Jews working on Shabbat. I know here in Jerusalem Rav Metzger would revoke the teuda in a heardbeat if such a thing happened.
45. Who is Sylvester??
R. ,   Yerushalaim   (12.25.12)
Xmas and "New Years" are Roman pagan celebrations that the Paulists adopted as their own.
46. Kashrut certificate
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.25.12)
Abroad , where i lived , there is a baker , 100 % Orthodox kashrut certificate . The non Jews in this country eat special cakes at xmas , and this baker makes them too . People come from faraway to buy those cakes . Would this be admitted here ? A 100 % Kosher Jewish bakery making cakes for christians for xmas ! And he does it since tens of years .

solomon ,   bklyn   (12.25.12)
Thanks for the clarification. I haven't heard of something like that. So as to your statement about it being about money and power, you have a good point. (Personally, I would say "mostly" about money.)

solomon ,   bklyn   (12.25.12)
Every day in the Catholic calendar has a saint attached to it. The saint for December 31st is Saint Sylvester, from which came the modern day term "Sylvester" for New Year's Eve.
50. KASHRUT CERTIFICATES HAIFA NEW YEAR
Shulamith ,   Israel   (12.25.12)
The commentators are shouting and performing but not being logical. If you want a Kashrut Hechsher it must be because you are Jewish, religious and want to keep Kosher laws, which are to do with observing Judaism and its laws. If you want to celebrate Christmas or New Year which are Christian/Pagan holidays, why do you need to do it in a place with a Kosher Hechsher. Go to the other places which do not have a hechsher or keep Kosher and therefore you will not be making a mockery of Judaism and its laws of Kashrut.
51. Kashrut Certificates New Years Celebrations
Lenise ,   Netanya   (12.25.12)
Anyone who says that New Years Celebrations are not in respect of Christianity, please check Sylvester on the Internet. You will find 31 December is the feast day of Saint Sylvester who was also known as Pope Sylvester I who died and was buried in the tomb of a Saint Priscilla. So please do not say the Rabbinate is wrong and New Year has nothing to do with Christianity. Kashrut Certificates are in respect of restaurants who keep the laws of Judaism and Kashrut, and also the hashkafa of Judaism.

conclusions. Sadly the dishonest Orthodox people give the majority good ones a bad name. Read 47 please.
53. Shulamit, obviously you have no idea!
Northerner   (12.25.12)
You don't have to be religious to get a Kashrut certificate! My boss is secular and owns a kosher business given by the rabbanut. Second, New Year eve is not a Christian holiday! Is Yom hatzmaut a Jewish holiday to you?
54. Lenise, only in Israel you have Sylvester
(12.25.12)
The whole world celebrates new year eve! If Christians were to celebrate Sylvester on the 31st of December then why aren't they celebrating pope Gregorio on 3rd of September?
55. Lenise , people take this occasion
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.25.12)
to have fun , to welcome a new year . They don't even think at this sylvester . Don't you use this calendar ? Wich calendar do you use to make paynents ? to write a cheque ? to take a plane ? Can we use any possibility to wish friends and family a good healthy year ?
56. Shulamit
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.25.12)
There are kosher places who organise such feasts , to make some money . There are Jews who want to have some fun , and if a restaurant can give it , they are going to this place , kosher or not .

There are people who observe kashrut laws , but also want to make some fun , take this day to "explode" , to welcome a new calender year . That's one . Secondly , there are Kosher restaurants who see an opportunity to make some profit , and organise a great evening . Three , a group of people want to hold a festive evening , and search for a good place . A Kosher place offers what they need . Is there something wrong with it ?
