Israel comes to the world's rescue. I don't think that the Pentagon can expect the same remarkable degree of cooperation and warning if Hagel's appointment passes the Senate. Don't lose sight of the fact that, despite all its bases in the Middle East, the United States would not have had sufficient time to deploy and mount a response. Only Israel can do that. In fact, only Israeli intelligence caught wind of Assad's likely intent to introduce nerve gas into the equation. I hope the international community keeps that in mind. During the cold war Israel was essential to America's interests in a region dominated by Soviet client states and when Israel captured any Soviet technology it passed it onto the US. In 1966 an Iraqi defector brought his MIG 21 which was top of the line back then and it allowed the US to study the captured MIG. All other captured Soviet equipment was shown to the US to study. One time Israel stole a brand new Egyptian radar system fresh from the Soviet Union by flying helicopters into Israel, dismantling it and bringing to Israel and again the US got to study it. Israel never saved the world but it has done the west plenty of favours. In 1981 the world condemned Israel for bombing Saddam's nuclear plant, in 1991when they fought Desert Storm they were saying thank god Israel took it out because Saddam would have had nukes by then These are just things that have become public but I imagine Israel has done plenty to help the west before but its kept quiet about If Assad is to use chemical weapons it will be Israeli pilots who are first on the scene knocking out Syrian radar, anti aircraft systems and chemical weapons facilities so alot fewer obstacles for US pilots to overcome with when they arrive. So sure Israel doesn't go around the world with aircraft carriers acting as global policeman and stopping foreign wars but at a local level it is essential for the western powers to do their jobs.

It was Israel that gave NATO its first look at the Soviet T-72 tank, whereupon it was quickly discovered that there was NOTHING -- but NOTHING -- in the NATO arsenal that could pierce the skin of the T-72. Thanks to Israel, NATO immediately focused on this rather severe -- fatal, actually -- shortcoming. Otherwise -- imagine the outcome if the Soviets had gone charging into Western Europe. Well, then how come the United States didn't know that Saddam Hussein's massive stocks of chemical and biological weapons were trucked across the border into Syria from Iraq until Israel informed them? And how come all that sophisticated satellite technology couldn't find bin Laden until the Mossad told you where to find him? And where was all that sophisticated satellite technology when a handful of barefoot warlords kicked United States ass in Somalia? And why is the United States sinking ever deeper into the morass in Afghanistan, Waziristan and Yemen -- I suppose since there aren't very many vehicles in those places, they don't need satellites that can read tags.
