Michelle, if the Center-Left leaders joined forces into a single political party (unlikely with their monstrous egos), they could have beaten Netanyahu (Likud) in terms of being the largest party in the Knesset (Parliament). The leader of the largest party in Parliament has first-go to try and form a government. It is possible that with the support of the Arab parties, plus maybe an ultra-orthodox party, the Center-Left would be able to form a government. If they could not have formed a government, Netanyhau would then have an opportunity to see if he could establish a coalition.
Whether right-wing, left-wing, or center, the only way to form a government is to get support from at least 61 of the 120 members of Parliament.
Do Livni, Yachimovich, and Lapid care about the country? I'm sure they do, but remember as I said before, the leader of the largest party is the one that gets to form a government and be Prime Minister. None of the leaders of the Center-Left faction want to be anyone's #2, they all think they should be Prime Minister and that that is what is best for the country.
