1. Good news in the News...for a change
Jake   (01.14.13)
2. The Demographic Threat
Zechariah   (01.14.13)
It's great to witness the growth in Jewish people in Israel among some sectors one as a Jewish survivalist to payback heavy for the Shoah would like maximal protection for our society and less waste on nareshe luxuries .We ought pull out of the Olympic Games in 2016 and concentrate on the security and Social Gap Daam Yisroel Nokeam.
3. Fertility and death rates converge
Mark ,   London, UK   (01.14.13)
The convergence applies to all sectors of society. This seems to be a more appropriate headline for this article.
4. Impressive statistics on health.
Michael ,   California, USA   (01.14.13)
Almost too hard to believe in view of health budget limitations, but no doubt Israeli doctors, nurses and the rest of personnel are doing a very good job. Let's hope the statistician didn't err.
5. Who says Haredi don t contribute?
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (01.14.13)
6. Demography
Moshe ,   Israel   (01.14.13)
The main reason that we are still a Jewish majority state is thanks to the chareidim and datiim, the ones having the most babies. Certainly not to the Tel Aviv yuppies - the majority of whom stay single and/or have one kid (and a dog).
7. Secular Jews need have more children
Chaim Ben Kahan ,   Efrat, Israel   (01.14.13)
Jews need to make up for the losses of the Holocaust. We need babies and lots of them. Get to work!
8. ;) ,...
split ,   US   (01.14.13)
You mean an orthodox birth rate that means more mouths to feed and more burden for the working class and closer the end of this experiment called zionism ,...
9. The avg. for secular families should be 3 - 4 chldren
Scott ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (01.14.13)
This is the only way secular people will avoid becoming a minority in Israel. 2 children = zero growth
10. Counting only Jews in a jigsaw puzzle map is a fake majority
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (01.15.13)
11. #8 You err in your definition of "Orthodox birthrate"
Jake   (01.15.13)
Black-hatted Haredim do not make up the majority of Orthodox Jews in Israel. Non-Haredi and religious Zionist families also have large families, and they shoulder the burden, serve in the military, etc.
12. Birth rate
Roxy ,   Israel   (01.15.13)
While it is great that the Jewish Population is growing,if it is in the Haredi population it will only increase the burden on the secular population in terms of taxes whose money is used on part to support the non working Haredi members. It also does not improve the size of the IDF either since most Haredi avoid the manditory military service that is required of Citizens, so while seculars are off serving in the IDF the Haredi population is increasing and soon there will be a problem in who will support them as the secular population will drop in number and more will leave the country if the Haredi become the majority.
13. Like India and Pakistan
Chaim Ben Kahan ,   Efrat, Israel   (01.15.13)
The two people need to separate for peace to have a chance. Muslims must move to a Muslim nation and Jews in Muslim nations move to Israel. This the best path to peace. We cannot wait till the Arabs in Israel gain a better foothold in order to destroy our nation from within.
14. Most of the increase is Haredi
Sean ,   Phoenix   (01.15.13)
I just think it is interesting that Israelis will celebrate the rising Jewish birthrates on the one hand but in the same breath call the Haredi useless parasites. That growth isn't coming from the secular sector. The future belongs to them so better get used to it. Without them, the Arab timebomb is an actual threat.
15. Chareidi birthrates
Ilana S. ,   Israel   (01.15.13)
In many if not most of the chareidi families, the husband may study in Kollel, but the wife works - usually as a teacher or in a computer or accounting job. This is not easy when a woman has many children, but these women are very organized and somehow manage well. Also, the kollels really do not pay the men much money. Most of these families live a very modest life - by choice. Fancy houses, expensive clothing, expensive vacations, etc are not important to them. What's interesting is that in most cases, the very wealthy secular do not have big families even though they can certainly afford to. Religious families believe that the continuity of the Jewish People is the most important thing. It is not easy to raise a big family, but they do it. If everyone in Israel were secular, we would have been an Arab state long ago - chas v'chalila.
16. Many "seculars" have 3 kids
Yochanan ,   Y'layim, IL   (01.15.13)
But indeed, hopefully the 'secular Jewish' birth rate will also increase. Baruch HaShem the overal Jewish birth rate is growing incl. the Hareidi part of that. The Dati Leumi avg. is 4-6. All sounds great! Be'ezrat HaShem it'll be only BETTER and BETTER in our near future for Am Yisrael in Erets Yisrael!!
