31. Talk with WHO????
Jon ,   USA   (01.25.13)
You suggest Lapid talk to Deri ( a criminal), Rabbi Yosef (racist) about WHAT? what do you offer to talk about? how much more money you want to suck from the Israeli people? You did not give any suggestion where the compromise can be. To talk fo the sake of talking is an exercise in futility. And as far as the civil war, it is better now then later. Be god with you and the army with us!!!
32. Careful son
Matt   (01.25.13)
nuclear weapons, civil war.
33. What are Haredim afraid of?
Chaim Ben Kahan   (01.25.13)
Are they afraid that if their youth meet non-religious people that they will want to become secular? I am for sending Haredim to do volunteer work for three years. Perhaps they can work with children, help poor people, work with the elderly, grow urban gardens in Haredi neighborhoods and some should be sent to the army. Just make sure they have Kosher food, time to pray and put on Tefilin, but I believe we already have religious units that have this. Haredim will not make a civil war and if they do the response from secular Israelis will be strong and swift.
34. enlighten me somebody!
DavidR ,   USA   (01.25.13)
When I look into Torah at the Ministries of the Levite, I see a great deal being accomplished for Israel! When I look at these Yeshiva boys and the Rabbi's that are produced, I see nothing being done for Israel. Other than threats of war if they are not allowed to continue as parasites on society. Of course I am in the US and can't observe what is actually happening so perhaps I am wrong. Someone please tell me what good this Yeshiva occupation is doing. How long does it take for one to be taught how to spit on women and protest on Shabbat?
35. Check out Lapid's speech at Ono College
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (01.25.13)
Ono is an ultra-Orthodox college in Jerusalem. Lapid spoke there recently; the speech is on-line, and it's quite good. He may be "chiloni" but he has a real Jewish heart. Shaked *is* an extremist, saying quite clearly that they're going to continue as they've been doing, and will revolt if anyone tries to challenge them. But as Lapid points out, the haredim have "won", numerically, economically and spiritually. But that means they have to take responsibility, and not just for their own kind and their own way of life, if the country is to survive and thrive. What the haredim have created in Israel is unnatural and contrary to Jewish history and tradition. It's time they faced up to that. Joshua, David, and the students of Akiva were all warriors. Are today's haredim better that they should spend their days only in the Beit Midrash and not on the front lines?
36. Haredim
Gabriel ,   Dallas, TX, USA   (01.26.13)
So let me understand, the Haredim will not go to the army and take up arms against our enemy but they will take up arms and fight their Jewish brothers? Wow, that sounds very deep, is this what the Torah studies gave you guys? Hey, I have a better idea, close the $$ faucet, stop all payments to Haredim and see how many of them will like to study Torah and leave on their dough.
37. Let me get this straight!
Benjamin ,   Tel Aviv   (01.26.13)
The atavistic, medieval Harradim won't raise a hand to help defend the Jewish state against our sworn enemies but they threaten violence against their fellow Jews?!! Forget bearing arms! They reduce to clean up their own streets, tend the I'll in hospitals or even help Holocaust survivors. Unbelievable!
38. HAREDIM & CIVIL WAR
PAUL ,   NEW YORK, USA   (01.26.13)
SO, THE HAREDIM ARE READY TO FIGHT AND KILL JEWS, BUT NOT ARABS?
39. You're an eat-for-free.
Max Merbaum ,   Los Angeles   (01.26.13)
Live for free. Security for free. Buchers, get ready to put your boots on. Time to produce something of value: a sweat.
40. Parasites
geshmrdo ,   jerusalem, israel   (01.25.13)
"I am not Haredi or even close to orthodox, but I do see Israel's victories in 48, 67 and 73 as miracles. Do you?" No, it was the effort of thousands of soldiers, many of whom died despite your "miracles". "miracle" will be the day these parasites (Haredim) do what everybody else does in Israel: go to the Army and then work for a living, so they will be able to fund their Yeshivot (just like Haredim in the US, who don't plunder State coffins to support themselves and fund their Yeshivot). PS: btw, where's the miracle in the Holocaust? PSII: tell me please what are the new developments in Tora study that we can understand as major contributions.
41.  Lapid - & civil war
amir burstein ,   United States   (01.26.13)
ohad shaked assumes that lapid, just because his party did so well in the elections, is miraculously in a position to alter deeply ingrained social/ religious traditions in israel, let alone prevent a civil war. the key words are : DEEPLY INGRAINED TRADITIONS. since Ben-Gurion made his deals with the haredim as he was putting together the first memshalah ( yes, that was 65 years ago !), he operated under the indisputably most extreme of historical constraints. his political vision has not been surpassed since. to accomplish that task he opted to grant the haredim all kinds of EXAMPTIONS no other organized group of israelis has ever received, or hope to ever receive. and, under the reality of the unique survival history of israel - that is perfectly understood, even reasonable. ohad shaked is making the misguided assumption that, just because they study torah, & follow their CHOSEN way of life, the haredim somehow deserve to be treated with exception to the rest of the citizens of israel. he even refers to the haredim as being DIFFERENT. that is PRECISELY the problem: they are NO DEFERENT FROM ANYBODY ELSE. we're all jews/ israelis. we're all shouldering the collective burden of living in israel. this is by our CHOISE. threatening Lapid with a civil war is GROSSLY tasteless, let alone a flagrant black-mail. it's also breaking the mitzvah : lo taa'se toratcha kardom lachpor bo". instigating any kind of "civil disobedience" if Lapid somehow does not fully live up to this black- mail ( & other ways of pressure) is = a child throwing a tantrum in gan hayeladim. its high- noon ohad shaked & his fellow haredim recognize that israel is NOT a gan yeladim
42. Wow, throwing down the gauntlet
StevieT ,   USA   (01.26.13)
Either they continue their freeloader ways or they will ruin the country. What a people. Can't be my people, but what a people.
43. Call their bluff
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (01.26.13)
Its about time Israel put an end to this mass living on the dole and their avoidance of civil responsibility. Let go to any other country where they will have to support themselves. Perhaps their should be a limited amount of gifted scholars, say 400 or 500 that are exempt from military service. If they disobey the law they should be deported as they are not realy citizens of Israel
44. to #2 no reasonable solution required
vered ,   hedara   (01.26.13)
in style of "encourage haredim to work". Because if I don't work I starve...
45. #14 don't tell us bullshit.
vered ,   hadera   (01.26.13)
No miracles due to haredim. Parasitism is against of G-d
46. Simple solution draft the 18 year olds to a good party
Mordechai   (01.25.13)
First stop threatening violence. Haredim who have never served have no weapons and no training will not be in a civil war. It will be very easy to arrest all the 18 year olds put them in a room with a really good party with girls and they will drop the haredi lifestyle on the spot.
47. civil war??
Scott ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (01.26.13)
That Mr. Shaked is suggesting there may be civil war over getting haredim to serve is pathetic. Serving would be the best thing for haredim, most of whom are born into this crazy cult that traps them into a life of subservience & poverty. It is possible to devote one's life to Torah study & serve in the IDF & have a job afterwards. The Torah calls on all Jews to be productive members of society.
48. Shaked: you'd prefer haredim be leeches ?
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (01.26.13)
How about a plan to give haredim the symbolic carrot if they enlist. Probably a financial carrot. Because as rest of 'normal' Israel sees it - Haredim getting free ride in Israel and their prayers do not seem to be helping.
49. It's funny...
Yehudah ,   Jerusalem   (01.26.13)
...because it looks like that it's OK to draft any secular kid that would be prefer to go directly to a university instead of being drafted and have their educational and professional life postponed for 2-3 years, but oy vaavoy lanu if they postpone the studies of haredi yeshiva boys the same amount of years. C'mon, there IS life after the army. It's not like the IDF is drafting those kids forever and taking them out of their of their religious studies forever! Stop whining and become a regular citizen of this country!
50. Civil War? Yeah right!
Fred ,   Negev, Israel   (01.26.13)
Heradim are unreasonable even if they say they aren't. All 18 year olders should be drafted and as in the case of today some won't end up serving. However said, it will be equal treatment for all and that's what is important. Since Heradim overwhelmingly live on welfare and don't pay taxes they can elect to live without any subsidies and stay out of the army or Sherut Leumi. They can't have both and that's what the elections have said.
51. civil war? Rubbish,
jo   (01.26.13)
the Palestinians use this kind of thread a lot, terrrorism, civil war etc. Regardless something must be done, the situation must be solved. Many seculars watched the many haredi anti State rallys, the hatred of all things not haredi, the State, and ask why they bother to ask from money for such infidels... yes there are more moderate Haredi groups, should they not speak up and be just and fair for all........
52. Haredi kingmakers perpetrating Jewish Inquisition
Thinking Jew ,   World   (01.26.13)
not only on all Israelis -- on all Jews everywhere
53. not a chance of civil war just stop give them money
amos ,   Israel   (01.26.13)
The haredim do not know how to fight they are not king David or the maccabim or the judges . all they know is to make trouble because they do not work legally . Smply cut theur allowences and favours in houses food and other things let them take care of themselves like all the jews including haredim all over the world
54. Civil War? Then Violence is OK?
Shimon ,   Cincinnati USA   (01.26.13)
If so, what is the objection to Army service? Want to learn? Take a book with you. There are only 24 hrs. in a day? Wake up earlier. Our biblical ancestors served in armies. You believe we should be true to their ways? So what's the problem? Look, Ohad: You're not in the shtetel anymore. Get your butt in gear, serve, be a mensch.
55. The hypocrisy of the haredim is shocking!
Eric ,   Toronto   (01.26.13)
They won't fight against the enemy, but they will against other Jews! This shows clearly the type of people Shaked and the haredim are! Amazing that Israel, supposedly a "democratic" country, tolerates this sort of nonsense. I do hope that Lapid will go after what he campaigned for. Otherwise he will also be seen as a hypocrite!
56. civil war? never!
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (01.27.13)
The chances of having a civil war over the charadi draft are non existant. The charadim are almost non violent with the exceptions of a few Meah Sharim nut cases. The real problem is that the state can not address the charadi needs and the army knows that too. Couple that with the hatred that the secular world has for the charadim - there is little chance, that with out change in the army and the Israeli secular society that the charadim will be inducted. What is needed is a special program for the charadim that will not just give them skills to be soldiers, but also a job education program, yes, in the army, that will give them job skills for entering the national job market and on the other side, a education program to educate the seculars that the charadim are not parasites, but people who the general Israeli society has stigmatized and discriminated against for many years. I know. I worked in the IDF and worked in the secular work force. The discrimination here in Israel is worse than that in the US against blacks and Jews. This must be changed and I hope that Yair Lapid is big enough to do it.
57. You are impudent!!!
Secular Israeli ,   Holon   (01.27.13)
A mass of haredim not going to the army, not working.. Have 7-10 children on the family and get money from Bituah Leumi, that secular Israeli is paying!!! Making children is become your work!!! Children is bless, but you must do something more!!!! This is true Judaism??? To seet on the neck of another people??? It's NOT!!! Start to work,be the normal people. If you not,go away from this country!!! Just go away!!! Go to another country, that ready to keep hundred of thousand parasites, that think that they more good that other people!
58. Secular Draft Dodgers
Jay ,   Israel   (01.27.13)
He mentions secular draft dodgers. Well at least they don't get supported by the state. It is deplorable and should be dealt with as well but there is a big difference. The secular types go out and work and pay taxes instead of bleeding the system dry. To even compare the two is disingenuous. Furthermore, Lapid has already set out a very good plan to take into account a transition period of 5 years where haridim don't need to go to the army but would be able to work instead of HAVING to go to the army. Only then would they have to start sharing the burden through military or national service. If only the haridim would have similar numbers of young men and women who serve and "draft dodge" as the secular citizens do. It would be great for them to get to the same point as the rest of society in terms of working and serving. It is hypocritical to point out some draft dodgers where nearly the entire community of haridim has it institutionalized. There chuzpah has no limits.
59. The army must be a place that the Rabbis.
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (01.27.13)
will agree to send religious boys, whether they are good learners or not. They must agree to have , maybe , chareidi commanders that lead those boys that you want to draft. Come on you guys, there is a way to make this work, just open your eyes and ears.
60. A civil war? So you CAN fight after all.
Avi ,   NYC, USA   (01.27.13)
Good. Draft them all.
