1. What? so the 5 Jews living in Australia cant vote?
Ben R   (01.30.13)
2. Move to Israel!!
(01.30.13)
If it bothers Austrialian Jews (who are a tiny minority there), then they should move to Israel where elections are not held on Shabbat or holidays. Probably many of them will vote on Yom Kippur anyway, as they see themselves as Australians first and Jews second - if at all.
3. Nonsense
Dave ,   Adelaide   (01.30.13)
In case the readers are not aware the Australian day does not follow the Hebrew tradition! There's still time to vote when Yom Kippur finishes Polling stations open until 11pm. Nonsense article!
4. #1
Naftali ,   Modiin Israel   (01.30.13)
As the article stated there are 107,000 Jews living in Australia. That is a lot more than 5
5. #2 yeah right, move to Israel solves everything.. NOT
Aussie in Israel   (01.30.13)
Move and be a slave and earn the same salary you had when you were 19.. The only person that seems to be bothered is Ynet!
6. Australian Jews literally cannot avoid voting either way
Vlad   (01.30.13)
Since voting is compulsory and you get fined if you don't.
7. Anyway...
Walt K ,   Sherbrooke, Canada   (01.30.13)
she is beautiful.
8. No big deal -they can vote in advance
Boris Mann ,   IL   (01.30.13)
Is Ynet desperate to fill its page today?
9. ?
Dundurn ,   Ft. McMurray   (01.31.13)
So again the jewish community tries to dictate what sovereign nations will do. How bloody sanctamonious.
10. #5 Moving To Israel - Not!
Bill Foonman ,   Jacksonville, USA   (01.31.13)
In case you were unaware, Israel is not the place to emigrate to if your sole reason is a "higher salary." People, for the most part, come for more altruistic reasons than that.
11. #9 Whether you like it or not
Expat ,   Adelaide   (01.31.13)
Australia is an immigration-based nation. Jews are as part of this nation as any other community.
12. Thanks #3 and #8, nothing better than objective information!
IBRAHIM SUED ,   Rio de Janeiro   (01.31.13)
13. Religious extremists making trouble again
Haim ,   TA   (01.31.13)
They can cast a pre-poll vote, whats their problem. The world dosent come to a standstill because of some medevil superstition .
14. Australian Jews need not vote for Julian Gillard
(01.31.13)
15. #9 Bloody insensitive
Deb ,   USA   (01.31.13)
Bet she wouldn't schedule the election on Christmas Day or Easter Sunday. This was obviously intentional to skew the vote.
16. Reason
Matt   (01.31.13)
They need the Muslim vote in NSW and in the western suburbs. So they exclude the Jews from voting on election day. That is why nothing has been said about the grand Mufti meeting Hamas. Which is a terrorist group and is not structure like the IRA with a separate political wing. This is also the reason no matter what the cause they always call for a ceasefire if Israel goes to war, the Muslim vote in those areas I mentioned. Also this Labor Government have bad form on postal votes. I suggest you go to an electoral office for a pre poll vote, not postal. To make sure no votes in your name.
17. Australian Federal Elections
Sue ,   Sydney , Australia   (01.31.13)
I agree Yom Kippur is a pretty bad time for an election- for our PM- her days will be numbered especially after our country abstained form voting regarding the UN admission to "Palestinians" as observers ( amongst all the other issues that arose during her priministership) . It is Shabbat and I urge every Jew in Australia to do what most of us do- vote early by mail or attend a pre polling booth during the week if possible. Let all of us be sealed for a good healthy life at the end of Yom Kippur and may our wishes regarding who our next prime minister be, be also granted by Hashem.
18. Stupid woman. Stupid, stupid woman.
(01.31.13)
19. 6 Vlad: It is better to be fined for not voting in such a
Rivkah   (01.31.13)
stupid country that confiscated weapons from people so they can't defend themselves and their families from criminals or foreign invaders or rioters. Stupid country and stupid female Prime Minister. Stupid is as stupid does, the saying goes.
20. #9 dundurn - no...
solomon ,   bklyn   (01.31.13)
it’s “just” a community asking that their religion be respected. And if your boss told you you had to work through Christmas, with no celebration allowed, how would you feel. What a bloody sanctimonious post of yours.
21. To all the whingers......
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (01.31.13)
This is a complete non-issue. Apparently the polling stations are open till 23:00 so what's the problem? Australia doesn't owe any particular minority any more than any other minority and by your logic then all Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and other festivals wouldn't be acceptable as a voting day either, not that that would worry any of you lot. Australia is NOT a Jewish country.
22. what sort of Aussie
Bill ,   NZ   (01.31.13)
would have a hissy fit over something like this? No wonder Gillard is not bothered. She must be the only real man in parliament.
23. The PM choose between Yom Kippur
aliza ,   haifa   (01.31.13)
and the AFL grand final. She choose in favour of the aerial ping pong fans instead.
24. Yom Kippur vote
edouard ,   Canada   (01.31.13)
What's the big deal!!!!!????? Jews can vote before everybody it's not like if they couldn't vote Australian are very good to Jews and israel Stop making a problem where their is not If every minority's should be taking Into account about a voting day ,they would've NO VOTING DAY
25. Proves Australia is an anti-semetic country
Dave ,   Montreal, Canada   (01.31.13)
This was deliberate. They could have scheduled it on any other day.
26. No problem - You can still Vote
Tova ,   Canada   (01.31.13)
Vote early like most people, doesn't matter if its a religious holiday or going on vacation. You have been given the priviledge and right to vote. Do it - One day it may be taken away from you. Go Vote.
27. Sounds like to me it's the religious extremists
John ,   St. Louis, MO, USA   (01.31.13)
who are OK with this, since they have to vote pre-poll or by mail every time. It's the Liberal/Moderates who usually violate the Sabbath to vote, but who won't do so on Yom Kippur, who now feel somewhat inconvenienced by the fact that they are going to have to vote by mail this time, along with their more Orthodox brethren. Note: I am a Liberal/Reform Jewish American, who would likely vote on a Saturday in the US if we held them on Saturdays, but who wouldn't vote on Yom Kippur. (But I also wouldn't complain about it, as long as there were ways to vote beforehand.)
28. ;) ,...
split ,   US   (01.31.13)
There's a hundred ways to show you a finger ,...
29. Just another example
Sagi   (01.31.13)
of the "Chosen People" believing that the whole world should revolve around them. Sometimes I am ashamed for my country and my people. #9 Is perfectly correct.
30. why do Jews do this?
Joe ,   Downunder   (01.31.13)
it encourages ALL other groups to whine and complain in the same way. Jews make up a fraction of a per cent of the Australian population. If every self-identifying group in Australia , including the numerous different Asian communities, demands special consideration for its particular traditions the country could not function. Furthermore, when Jews act like this they incur exactly the same disapproval from others which Muslims do when they do it ( and Arab Muslims are second only to Jews in acting this way). People are not shy about complaining when Muslims do it. But when Jews do it people are too politically correct to complain. But secretly they are just as pissed off.
