Syria provides evidence of how effective their tactics are. Iran might be more worried by them than by peaceful protestors. My recollection is that Iran dealt with demonstrations in the same manner as Syria, by using thugs to bully and kill demonstrators. I dare say they advised Assad to use the same tactic.
