31. and this is what is teaching our children?
frank ,   rehovot   (02.03.13)
what a funny article. The point? You talk of the religious, of which I have no great love, and about all they are getting. They are only doing what every other political party does. They extort money and sell their principals. Just like every other party. But interestingly you don't mention the leftist wimps who easily sacrifice someone else so they don't have to pull their weight. They cry, whine and hollar about their fair share, when they do nothing for it. Entitlements. That is the new watchword. There is a real answer. If you do not do the army you get NO government subsidies in any way shape or form. Further you may not work for a government agency or company nor work for any private company or agency that does business with the government. Then, and yes, there are still consequences to actions, you must go to jail for 7 years and no parole. Or you can leave the country. But again, if you leave, you cannot return for any reason subject to being put in jail immediately and all the other conditions. People MUST understand and realize that actions have consequences. The above plan is not discretionary to a judge (corrupt) but mandatory (other than real medical etc). This will solve lots of problems, other than the problem of cowards in the knesset.....
32. on the topic of civil war
frank ,   rehovot   (02.03.13)
what a silly notion. How many political parties do we have???? and you think we can agree on a civil war???? the person writing the article has a complete lack of understanding of the dynamic of 1) being jewish and 2) being israeli....civil war, a great idea, maybe we could rid the country of the left, but will it happen? hahahahaha
33. STUPID
Moti ,   rbs   (02.03.13)
this is a stupid article, an article set to instigate trouble and has no literary value- Ynet - you should hold your self to a higher regard and not print this stuff
34. In last weeks op-ed, A Haredim offered civil war
StevieT ,   USA   (02.03.13)
..if there was too much pushback on their ancient (aka outmoded) ways. It was a shocking read for a secular like myself, so it seems that an article like this one is a fitting reply to the civil war nonsense from those who seek to bite the hand that feeds them.
35. Such talk is way too dramatic.....no basis
Dan ,   Tel Aviv   (02.03.13)
36. A reasonable solution required.
michael Pielet ,   israel   (02.03.13)
There is a problem. It must be resolved in a fundamental way. No threats. The two greatest mitzvot service in the IDF and studying torah.
37. THE END OF "SOME JEWS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHER JEWS.
DOUBLEWIDE ,   AMERICA THE BEAUTIUL   (02.03.13)
THE TYRANNY OF THE THE ULTRAS NOW MEETS REALITY. Israelis are about to enter world war 3 with iran and a few other arab thug states, and either the heredi are in the forefront of the battle as the caus de celebre, or they are the anchor around the neck of Israel and will help sink her...it's no more nonsense time...either fight for Israels survival or return to the middle ages, the pogroms the halocaust, because it is right around the corner. and Israel must stand alone if it must.
38. It is great news that there is an opportunity
Runner1983 ,   USA   (02.03.13)
to increase religious pluralism in Israel. However, society needs to change well beyond the changes outlined in the article. There are serious differences in the everyday cultural practices of Haredim and everyone else. The continuing trend to marginalize women by the Haredim cannot exist side by side with the beliefs and practices of modern western society that believes in equal rights for both men and women. As the Haredim grow faster than the rest of Israeli society, they will continue to try to impose their own views and standards regarding women and many other aspects of life, and this shift towards their culture is very harmful to Israeli society. I fear for the future of Israel, which cannot survive in the haredi culture becomes the dominant one.
39. coerced to join?
miriam levy ,   Israel   (02.03.13)
Shas is warning that the religious will not tolerate being coerced to join the army. Odd that it doesn't bother them that all the other young Jews in Israel are being coerced to join the army. One exalted leader even said they'd be willing to die rather than fight for Israel? Really? Judging from their track record they would probably just burn tires and spit on girls....maybe throw some rocks and curses. Ohhh! I'm so scared!!
40. No Jobbik in Israel, please?
Anti-Jobbik   (02.03.13)
For the better Hungary, by a detour to antisemitism. That is the despicable Jobbik - Vona & Morvay. The optimal approach is through love, patience and empathy. Let us see the tremendous value in the great number of decent orthodox Jews, and also in the masses of good Palestinians. The good ones will seek integration and assimilation. A marriage between the good religious and secular world is possible.
41. This word "civil war" incitement to VIOLENCE
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (02.03.13)
Why do you use the word "civil war". If your mad just change the law and let them sit in jail. What are you implying by saying that term That one should pick up weapons and fight physically what you cant achieve through the democratic process.? Isnt this incitement. Author and newspaper is on questionable side of the law risking legal complaint.
42. Universal Draft
Barney Rosen ,   Hemet California USA   (02.03.13)
Izhar Oplatka has hit the nail on the head! It is a crime against every citizen of Israel what these Hareidem have done to the country and their own children! The only way I can describe them is as parasities-a cancer eating out the life of the nation. And Israel's political parties have done this to everyone in the country by trading power for their votes. Everytime Israel has fallen is due to me first people like them.
43. For the mutual benefit of all.
michael Pielet ,   israel   (02.03.13)
Sagi, my dear, why are you always so angry? Please do not use the "a" word when discussing this problem. First, all who serve in the IDF are performing a most important mitzvah, protecting the people and the land. May hashem watch over each and everyone of them. Do no use the word "s......er", Rather they are giborai israel. I personally believe all should serve with honor. Another very important mitzvah is the study of torah. With the respect of one sector of society for another, I hope an acceptable, reasonable solution can be found by the leaders of each sector.
44. Israel cannot survive if the haredi culture

solomon ,   bklyn   (02.03.13)
Those who study Torah AND those who don’t, were here long before the professor came. How do you think they ate? By working. All of them.
46. No army service ,no work
Bigheart ,   Tel-Aviv, Israel   (02.03.13)
Let them starve, or get their money from foreign donors. Its so simple.
47. get those haredim
jen ,   jerusalem   (02.03.13)
there is no reason why all cannnot go to the army why are they different to my children why must their mothers sleep at night and I toss and turn ,they are parasites of the country ITS about TIME they too do something for our country or they must GO
48. Haredim and the Jewish image.
GADY ,   Mexico City   (02.03.13)
Usually, I don't care too much about what other people say. But when it comes to being a jew, what every one of us does, affects the rest of The People. I am an emancipated secular proud jew, and I believe freedom is the most important value in man, so I respect someone, who differently from myself, lives by obeiyng the Torah, he can eat what he wants, pray what he wants and dress like he wants. But pay attention, what a jewish person does, dressed in an excentric and weird way, will be applied to all of us. Things in the diaspora are tough, we can do without the prejudjments enforced by these guys...
49. "young" vs. 3000 Yrs of TRADITION
Unmitigated Truth ,   USA   (02.03.13)
What makes YOU the authority on what is Right for Israel? History has shown that the Jewish State ONLY thrives when Jews follow the Torah given us by God. What you are espousing is part of the worldwide Marxist Revolution that has failed each and every time. May GOD save Israel from the likes of your ilk.

May G-D hear you.

Vlad   (02.03.13)
First off, not every non-Haredi Jew serves. You know that as well as I do. There are exemptions, and draft-dodging. Secondly, what I meant to say is that the trend is growing. Used to be that few to none worked or served.
52. It's a two-way street
PaulD ,   Jerusalem   (02.03.13)
Haredim go into Military service, and the secular spend 14 hours a day learning Torah. Both are community necessities, and both ensure Jewish survival.
53. For crying out loud...
Ofer Maimon ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (02.03.13)
Why is this horrible assault on the Charedim published, what is the point? I agree they should do the Army. However, the Army DOES NOT want them. There has been talk about expanding the Charedi Nahal for years, nothing happens. And yes, they receive money for their Kollels, about a fourth of the money the state pays to subsidize each and every student in the secular universities. And the Charedim should work. Right. NOBODY in the secular community is willing to hire them! In spite of this, the latest summary showed some 40 % of them ARE working. What is lacking in this land is NOT more intransigent Ayathollas, religious ones like some, nor secular hate preacherslike the author, peddling lies and half truths. And threating our brothers and sisters with war. What is needed is honesty, integrity and bridge building.
54. #22: May G_d protect your son, and all those
Runner1983 ,   USA   (02.03.13)
other young men and women who protect Israel.
55. "Not you sucker anymore" ? May be

Somebody else will come along and grab you.
56. To nr. 29, a very wise comment.
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (02.03.13)
Two other example, when a civil war was necessary to save a nation's survival. Peter the great czar of russia, exterminated tens of thousand russians, who tried to hinder his state reforms, including russian religious fanatics. In China in 1910 a revolution brought out, mandarins were ousted and pigtails were cut on the streets by police. I wish the same in Israel, huge hats to be confiscated, instead a kippah is given. Much more confortable on summer days.
57. #49 unmitigated
solomon ,   bklyn   (02.03.13)
While there were orthodox who contributed to Israel's beginnings, my impression from reading a lot on the subject, is that they were in the minority.
58. Disgusting article...
Naor ,   USA   (02.03.13)
What kind of Jew openly threatens civil war? You are no better then the ones on the Haredi side who are calling for violence against fellow Jews if they are forced to go to the IDF. Change is needed but anyone who calls for violence against fellow Jews has lost his marbles.
59. Suckkers
Steve Gure USA ,   coconut creek, fl   (02.03.13)
What took them this long?
60. #52 your comment is rediculous!
Ze'ev   (02.03.13)
Somebody has to work! Somebody has to defend Israel! wWe are fed up hearing that Torah reading has protected us! Look at the shoa! Torah reading did not protect any of them show victims! Grapping a weapon and standing the enemy, THATS defending!
