10 Talkbacks for this article
1. follow rules or leave
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (02.04.13)
If the school teaches that it is forbidden for women to sing in front of men and a student breaks this rule, she should be suspended. Otherwise the other girls will learn from her that it is ok to do such things. Let her enroll in a non religious school where she can sing to men, hug men and wear mini skirts too. She probably will feel better there.
2. Primitive haredi customs
Israeli grandma   (02.04.13)
This ban on women singing in public is a modern haredi tabu, which makes a great fuss about normal human behaviour. These kinds of bans also drive yet another wedge between them and the rest of Israeli public. I am not a Hilonit by the way.
3. I'm religious and I sing
Jessica Derman ,   Israel   (02.04.13)
But I don't sing in front of men simply because the Torah says not to! Either you follow God's rules, or you don't! But don't claim to be religious if you don't follow His rules and end up doing whatever you feel like doing.
4. #2 We know just where you stand by the subject line alone
(02.04.13)
Sex is also "normal human behaviour" -- doesn't mean you do it in public. What makes you the one to judge what is normal public behavior and what is "primitive"?
5. School Suspends Voice Contestant
Nili   (02.06.13)
If she was in a private school with rules, she should be required to follow them. Also, what is with her parents? Surely they knew she was on the program before the suspension? Maybe there is more to this than is being reported...
6. This behaviour and the prohibition and
Robert Haymond ,   Tekoa, Israel   (02.06.13)
ensuing punishments only drive a wedge between the strict religious community and the rest of us. If this is "God's Law," as one Talkbacker noted, then I'm with the non-observant and glad of it. But there is surely something wrong when the socalled religious community seeks to deprive itself and its followers of so much that is natural and good and even beautiful. It's pretty obvious that were Sigmund Freud alive today, he would have no problem in accounting for the behaviour and beliefs of this particular Jewish community and its Talkback followers.
7. How ridiclous time to leave and go to a proper school
Haim ,   TA   (02.06.13)
Well what do you expect if you raise your child to be a brain washed zombie. She should leave the school and go to a normal school where she can develop her skills. Maybe these men who seem to get sexually eroused from hearing a 17 year old sing should get some psychatric help as they quite obviously need it.
8. well we all know that it is written in the torah
(02.06.13)
her school was right
9. Why?
Anna. L ,   USLU'S   (02.07.13)
Can someone Torah observant please tell me where G-D says women cannot sing? Is it just the later Sages that tell us? I cannot find it. What about the song of Devorah and things like that? I dont know what to think?
10. the voice ashamed
basri ,   paris france   (02.07.13)
Please tell us where is written in the Torah that a girl is not allowed to sing in front of men ? Did haredim made this law ? The Torah is for Hebrews or just for some religeous men ?
