31. #17. Please study our history
Tom W ,   USA   (02.15.13)
The Communist priestess, Rosa Luxemburg (1871-1919) described her disdain toward her people: "“What do you want with these special Jewish pains? I feel as close to the wretched victims of the rubber plantations in Putamayo and the blacks of Africa with whose bodies the Europeans play ball… I have no special corner in my heart for the ghetto: I am at home in the entire world." Rosa Luxemburg Or read the Jewish Marx's hateful conniptions: "On the Jewish Question (1843)" The modern left is the heir of the Jewish self-hate.
32. Why Israel is held to a different standard
esse ,   Israel   (02.15.13)
Perhaps because they spend billions of dollars to prop up our military. They also defend us diplomatically at the UN. Perhaps they also think that Israel is far better than the average authoritarian dictatorship/monarchy that is common in the Mid East and as the US and others played a role in Israel's creation they believe that they have a say in whether or not Israel acts morally. Perhaps we should stop whining about being held to a different standard and start asking ourselves if we deserve to be held to a different standard. I fear if things keep going the way they do, then Israel will indeed become indistinguishable from other Mid East nations. Then Americans and others won't hold us to different standards, they'll just accept that we're a POS third-world theocracy that is no different than Syria and Iran. Is this what talkbackers want? Because if this becomes the case, then our enemies truly have won.
33. Boycott BDS supporters
Chaim Ben Kahan ,   Efrat, Israel   (02.15.13)
Do not give them money, no jobs, blacklist all of the members for life.
34. BDS @ Brooklyn # 2
Adam ,   London   (02.15.13)
In your wildest dreams number 2
35. # 15 to Mrs Sarah B.
Monica Sanchez   (02.15.13)
Oh darling you are so wrong. 99% knows very well what Israel is doing. And we are now working hard on websites and media like this one to enlighten other minds. BDS is a successful movement and is growing much faster than you think with the help of the Jewish colleagues and friends in the campi. Sooner than you think the simple mention of the name Israel will provoke goosebumps.
36. Could foreign funding play a role here?
Johannes ,   Norway   (02.15.13)
37. Hate Speech
Bill Stein ,   USA   (02.15.13)
It's not freedom iof speech when boycotts are concern take a look at the boycott laws if the United States. It's not free speech when the Pro Israeli side is prevented from protesting. The University would never have allowed the Anerican Nazis to speak would they. How much Foreign Arab Goverment and foreign Arab private money did this university get? Maybe that should be exposed to the American public as a security risk. The Israeli Goverment and Jewish community should go after this university legally and report thier boycott activity to the US Goverment. That's my opinion.
38. Even Norman Finkelstein,
Reuven   (02.15.13)
certainly no friend of Israel's, has called the BDS nmovement a cult, which seeks the annhilation of Israel. As a graduate of Brooklyn College, I can say with certainty, that Gould has shown, at best, indifference to the increasing anti-Semitism there. She, should be fired.
39. bds - for France's action
eddiE ,   sa   (02.15.13)
In Mali where it used disproportionate force in attacking the rebels with sofisticatd fighter jets and killing inocent malians on their way to the grocer to buy bread.
40. To No. 31
Bertram ,   London, UK   (02.15.13)
'Jewish self-hate' is a weasel term employed by those with weak and spurious arguments to negate critical thought. Now, I have no special knowledge of Rosa Luxembourg, but evidently she saw herself as an internationalist and therefore did not privilege Jewish suffering over the suffering of those elsewhere. You, like nationalists everywhere, may disapprove of this kind of view, since you equate love of your people with a disdain for others. Such collective narcissism is ultimately self-destructive and, in its outcome, much more accurately, self-hatred.
41. Lose-Lose situation for Israel
BOB ,   YERUSHALAYIM   (02.15.13)
For those who think that this vicious propaganda doesn't work, just examine what happened at the Democratic convention. The pro-Israel issues weren't passed because the new age democrats were for them. It was because the old age democrats were too embarrassed or too politically correct not to include them and even the indivisible Jerusalem never made it to the front burner. Democrats, according to the Gallup pole were barely supportive of Israel with 53% while the Republicans were 25% HIGHER! Left vs right. Most people are not interested enough to educate themselves on the real issues so they rely on the propagandists for their opinion. then they are faced with Israeli "Free Speech and leftist media" on one side, and the state directed, anti-Israel media on the other to learn. "the whole story" is a lose-lose situation for Israel unless the momentum of the leftist press can be abated.
42. To: No. 35
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.15.13)
Oh, the mere mention of the State of Israel provokes goosebumps. Just think -- a people who have been persecuted in a manner that you cannot even begin to comprehend for two millennia have been restored to their ancient homeland! The home they never stopped dreaming of and longing for. And, despite all odds, have built a thriving country that leads the world in technology, and have survived six wars (all started by the Arabs) and prevailed against seven decades of unremitting ersatz "Palestinian" violence and terror! Who wouldn't get goosebumps! We survived the Babylonian Captivity; we survived the Seleucid Greeks; we survived the Roman Empire; we survived accusations of blood libel; we survived the Crusades; we survived the Inquisition; we survived the Russian pogroms; we survived the Holocaust .... to name but a few. Do you really think that BDS presents a threat to G-d's Chosen People? Think again.

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.15.13)
Will it help to inform you that Rosa Luxemburg was murdered by three individuals who subsequently became leading lights of the Nazi Party? People have suffered in great numbers, that much is true. But in the vast majority of cases, the suffering is due to wars, pestilence, disease and tribal violence. Why are you so adamant to accept the fact that Jews have been tormented simply because they are Jewish? That's not self-hatred, that's incomprehensible and unjustified -- or unjustifiable -- hatred of Jews on the part of others. We don't need to improve ourselves. Those who have been responsible -- and continue to be responsible -- for Jewish suffering were/are the ones with the problem. Can I ask you a simple question? I have seen photographs of Queen Elizabeth II visiting churches -- both Anglican and other, even visiting a mosque. What I have NEVER seen is a photograph of the queen -- or any other member of the royal family -- visiting a synagogue. Members of the royal family (queen included) have visited quite a number of countries. But never Israel. Why is that?
44. One of many problems
Akiva ,   NYC   (02.15.13)
A few years back there was a major study of funding of top US research universities with Middle Eastern Studies Departments. The study found that only two -- Johns Hopkins and Princeton -- did not receive support from Arab states or Arab foundations. This in turn affects appointmets and publications in this field.

mike ,   ny ny USA   (02.15.13)
Did you post on the internet about how the Palestinian behavior is eroding your support for them when they blew up a hotel or a few cafes and buses? I am quite certain that you did not.
46. Antisemitism?
X   (02.15.13)
Why don't u think about this: 70 % of israeli jews support an apartheid regime against non jews, 70 % of them think they are chosen people. Stealing lands is a crime everywhere but in israel, when the thiefs are jews. And so on ....
47. To No. 43
Bertram ,   London, UK   (02.15.13)
First of all, your last point. I agree, British royalty can hardly be accused of philosemitism or of being pro-Zionist. On the other hand, you make an error in assuming that I, as a republican, care or think about the actions of the Queen. Secondly, I am grateful for your pointing out to me that Jews have been tormented simply because they are Jews. A revelation, indeed. But, here's the thing. African-Americans were enslaved, persecuted and lynched simply because they were African-Americans. The Roma were, and still are, persecuted (and killed by the Nazis) simply because they are Roma. Was their suffering any the less simply because these people are not Jews? Knowing our people's history should make us more - not less - empathic towards others. That is the real meaning of acting like a mensch.
48. #47.follow your own advice if you want to be called a mensch
Abraham ben Jacob ,   Canada   (02.16.13)
In your T.B.'s you are all over the place. Waxing and waning eloquently in some cases and fairing poorly in others. Just stick to the point, don't forget your objectives and you might turn out okay, perhaps even a mensch to use your own words.
49. #47 Typical British Antisemite

#47 Typical British Antisemite. I grew up with antisemites like you in the UK.
50. To: No. 47
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.16.13)
Excuse me, but am I supposed to be responsible for all things despicable? Or can I just worry about Jews? Let the African Americans and the Roma come up with their own protagonists. I'll stick with what I know -- the Jewish people.
51. To No. 49

Well, you have really put your brain into gear with your comment. As Benjamin Franklin said of people such as yourself, we are all born ignorant but one must work hard to remain stupid.
52. To No. 50
Bertram ,   London, UK   (02.16.13)
You ask two questions. The answer to both is: do what seems right to you. I think the way I do because I was raised to believe that an important aspect of being a Jew was being able to connect with the lives others: Jews, non-Jews, old people, young people, men, women, black, white, disabled, etc. Unfashionable among these posts, I know. Maybe that is not what it means to be Jewish and that it is stupid and naive to think think that 'tikkun olam' has any importance in a world where the barrel of a gun speaks louder than humane words. It may be a fault in me but I cannot accept your view that collectively human beings do not have a responsibility for one and other. If that view was acceptable then it would also be acceptable to excuse all those who stood by while the death camps got on with their business. As that good old antisemite Voltaire said, we must look after our garden.
53. Corrections to No.52
Bertram ,   London, UK   (02.16.13)
Line 4 should read 'lives of others.....'. I should have added 'I am sure you would agree.' after the final sentence.

when the Sharia Jihadis in your country start to cut off your head with a dull knife, you won't receive any shelter from us. Enjoy your future.
55. #52 To self-righteous Bertram
Cynthia ,   USA   (02.16.13)
There's plenty of "tikkun olam" in Israel but you're too blind to see it. You and Judith Butler sit on your tuffitts sipping latte while Israelis are dodging kassams. Perhaps you should spread your "tikkun olam" to the children of Sderot or elderly poor in Israel. But no, it's not politically correct in your circle to support Israel. You and Judith Butler want to be accepted so you go out of your way to find fault with Israel. In Judith's case, to actually harm Israel while supporting terrorists.
56. American Jews are hopeless
steve from raleigh   (02.16.13)
Every single Jewish student should withdraw from Brooklyn college every singe Jewish employee should quit. Every single person who supported this should be very publicly put on an embargo list and barred entry to Israel for life. Any academic partnerships between Brooklyn college an Israel should be broken and severed. They want a boycott? Let it begin with them.
57. To: Steve at No. 56
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.17.13)
There aren't all that many Jewish students at Brooklyn College. The entire CUNY system has become "thirteenth grade." I mean, really -- most students at Brooklyn College cannot pass an English proficiency exam. That's a problem at universities everywhere. I have a kid at Yale who tutors students in English and arithmetic. Yes, I said "arithmetic." Not math. The student he tutors is functionally illiterate and cannot do "long division." Yet he is on full scholarship, and he isn't even an athlete. Were I an unkind person, I might ask what is that "student" doing at Yale on a free ride while I am paying a fortune for my son's education, but that would be politically incorrect. Heaven forfend.

have you ever actually been in Qatar or Bahrain or (non-Islamic example) Singapore? Non-democratic to the max; and fabulous places to live and raise children. You can keep your "Brooklyn College Democracy", dear. Go back to Occupy Oakland. Go get your food stamps
