1. So, your religion does not explain antyhing (really) except
tom ,   tel aviv   (03.08.13)
claiming that god (that is beyond our comprehension) doesn't want you to eat pork ....? not very deep. All in all: this article should be plastered all over walls of Jerusalem as an example of intellectual emptiness religion brings with it. You Sir, were simply born with a need for explanation and by Golly: "explanation" you got!
2. Books & knowledge
Reuven ,   Netanya   (03.08.13)
When you were a little child, you had a lot of questions. Seeking answers to things you didn't understand, asking why this and that. Unfortunatly you started reading the wrong literature. A man with such a determination to find answers, could have been a great added value to the scientific world. Too bad you have spent your energy in something that has been studied for 4000 years and still didnt provide a conclusive answer. Most researchers work a couple of years or their lifetime on a specific project, you however chose to continue the path of those who will never find answers. I have no doubt that you are an intelligent human being, but as I said previously, too bad you have chosen the wrong literature.
3. I´ts almost as Descartes" I only know, that nothing I know"

4. Rabbi Brackman
Devorah   (03.08.13)
If know-it-alls like #1 and #2 knew THE answer, do you think they would behave differently? Would they learn to at least show some respect toward a rabbi who did nothing to offend them?
5. The vacuity isn't the Book, it's many rabbis not grasping it
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Israel   (03.08.13)
Torah is replete with Biblical figures grappling with theological questions about what the Creator wants from us, from Adam & Eve, Cain & Abel, the Aqeidah, etc. throughout the Tanakh. Every skilled magician knows the relationship between preknowledge and free will -- and each demonstrates it routinely. I've published such a demonstration for decades. The notion that a Singularity-Creator conflicts with being Omniscient -- a necessary implication of inability to imagine and create multiplicity -- is an artificially-superimposed, human foible; not a logically compelling premise. Hence, the assertion is ex falso quodlibet. Critics should not be so illogical as to confuse the limitations of some readers and interpreters of Tanakh with deficiencies in Tanakh.
6. I have always been intrigued
Sagi   (03.08.13)
by the empty nonsense that emanates from the minds and mouths of "men of the cloth" such as Rabbis and Cardinals etc. One can see obviously intellegent people, learned academics in some cases who promulgate and perpetuate the man made invention of a "God". They are incapable of explaining the inexplicable so they resort to nonsensical hyperbole all wrapped up in a shroud of "divine essence", omnipotence and omniscience. The truth is that all these concepts, from the word "God" through to his magical powers and control over destiny, are metphysical concepts and philosophical by nature. Man invented "God" and not the other way round. Having invented something which is unprovable but had huge political potential Man then had to devise ways and means of firmly establishing, implanting and perpetuating the myth in the minds of men. These methods were various, inciting fear, invoking hope and for the inflexible punishment and death. All this is a sad refletion on the feeble mind of Man and the monstrous exploitation by "shepherds" such as the Rabbis and Cardinals. etc. Very sad and very detrimental to the advancement of Mankind. Instead of learning and teaching things of substance they study nonsense and then expound on it. Emptiness instead of substance. This "spitituality" has caused so much tension and suffering and death throughout the ages that it is now time for enlightenment to make its second arrival on the stage of humanity.
7. Sagi - your assertion is simplistic and pseudo-science
Paqid Yirmeyahu   (03.08.13)
"Try and penetrate with our limited means the secrets of nature and you will find that, behind all the discernible concatenations, there remains something subtle, intangible and inexplicable. Veneration for this force beyond anything that we can comprehend is my religion. To that extent I am, in point of fact, religious." – Albert Einstein Proof: (reductio ad absurdum): 1. Every effect (i.e., everything) in the universe is due to a cause. 2. Atheists hold that the Creator of the universe is non-existent, an "imaginary friend" 3. The effect of an non-existent cause is non-existent. 4. Therefore, there is no universe. Q.E.D.
8. Chabad Chassidus
Shmuel ,   Brooklyn, NY   (03.08.13)
Rabbi Levi, It is true that Chassidus provides answers to lofty questions. But seemingly the studying of Chassidus is not solely for that purpose (after all for there is a limit to what the human mind can grasp). Rather (at least in my limited understanding) the purpose, and what one gains from the intellectual rigorous study and understanding of Chabad Chassidus, is the ability to reach a lofty level of love, awe and self-nullification to our creator. Our intellect is used to elevate our emotions and to ultimately transform us into a more connected and loftier being. Hatzlacha Rabba Shmuli
9. god
Yosef ,   Ashdod   (03.08.13)
There is no god at all...is just me and my history, as a matter of fact I AM GOD!
10. Science
Ariel ,   São Paulo - Brasil   (03.08.13)
Science already has answers to all your questions. If you prefer to ignore them, or want to stop research to continue with your convictions, good luck
11. The Rabbi is correct.
Baruch ,   Boston, USA   (03.08.13)
This is a poor and inadequate analogy. It's impossible for a fish in a home aquarium to comprehend where the aquarium or the water in the aquarium or the chachkes in it came from. It's just as impossible for him to understand how food keeps appearing at the surface as its owner drops it every day. It's really impossible or him to comprehend the things he sees through the glass: the television, the people, the other devices, the pets, etc. It's even more impossible for him to understand what he doesn't see, or how what he does see works, the electronics, etc. That doesn't mean that what he sees doesn't tell him that there is something there that exists, but is beyond his comprehension. Scoffers are simple thinkers. They'd call us ignorant, but they are just way more ignorant. If they were pet dogs, they'd at least have the sense to express happiness to their owners, even though they can't comprehend what's going on, but those fish just do nothing.
12. #11:I like your analogy, especially that fish have miniscule
tom ,   tel aviv   (03.09.13)
brains and for a healthy-born individual to accept "truth" of any religion requires that the brain goes little "fishy" too.... No, I don't "know it all" far from it, but by Jove I am not willing to accept ramblings of white-sheets clad men that came down some mountain with madness in their eyes...
13. This is #1 cause of assimilation: no answers fm rabbis
Einstein ,   Israel   (03.10.13)
14. Paqid
Sagi   (03.10.13)
I replied in length to both your posts on Friday afternoon. They were not published. I sent a complaint into the editors and requested that they publish. They did not. I can assure you that there was no untoward comment in the posts that required censoring, rather it is just the normal lackadaisical attitude which is so prevalent, indeed ubiquitous in our society. I apologize.
15. 4.
Birdi ,   Israel   (03.11.13)
good question Devorah.
