1. This is crazy
Sidney ,   USA   (03.06.13)
What kind of nutty country jails a man for not obeying a religious court. The government and rabbis should be ashamed of themselves. More and more, Israeli rabbis act like ayatollahs. I weep for our people.
2. #1 If they didn't jail him for denying his wife a divorce
L ,   Merkaz, Israel   (03.06.13)
for 12 freaking long years, you'd say that the country and the Haredim didn't care to do anything for this woman and left her with no help. Obviously they've tried every way of convincing him aside from brutalizing him. Which way, then, because you can't criticize either action or inaction? Damned if they do and damned if they don't, hm?

our people? you are not Israeli. Our people? lol yanks
4. The problem is the system. Women will suffer until MEN......
Shamefull ,   Israel   (03.06.13)
change the halacha. The reason rabbis don't change it is because they themselves are control freaks. This system allows men to torture women is NOT Torah. It's all man made.
5. #3 Yes,OUR people. The JEWISH people. Or is an Israeli Arab
(03.06.13)
more YOUR people than a Jew in the U.S.?!? Probably. You live in Haifa. I'm constantly amazed by secular liberal Israelis -- how their Israeli pride is the same as an Italian's pride in being born in Italy. Is that all it is to you -- Israeli because you were born within the borders of this plod of earth which you claim no religious historical right to? How hollow and sad.
6. #4 Thy HAVE changed the system. Women need to be made aware
L ,   Merkaz, Israel   (03.06.13)
that there are clauses, similar in concept to the "Pre-nup", that can be added into a marriage contract, stipulating that a get will automatically be granted under certain circumstances. It's not terribly romantic to plan an escape route before you plan your wedding, but it can be the saving grace in the long run.
7. Religious Power at Play
Bobby ,   NY, NY   (03.06.13)
It is disgusting that a religious organization has the power to imprison anyone for any reason. It is far worse that the cause it entirely religious.
8. Another prime example of religous morality
Haim ,   TA   (03.07.13)
9. get rid of the rabinical court. jail him and by law grant wi
ralph   (03.07.13)
wife a get.
10. If this is what you call "religious power"...
(03.07.13)
If "religious power" means rights to women, helping women to get divorced, even putting the man in jail if he refuses I'd say some slight "religious power" is a god damn good thing.
11. I wonder why he doesn't want to give her
(03.07.13)
a get... Could it be that it means that he would have to give his wife has of money have his house taken over and have to pay for his wife to take care of his kids which he can't see. Israel is an extreme feminist country where men are afraid to get married
12. get refusal charge
observer ,   Egypt   (03.07.13)
he should have been jailed in rabbinical prison. not ordinary one. That would have been taught the to be divorced wife to pay more.
13. The jewish religious absurdity
Philip Barnett ,   London UK   (03.07.13)
Should a woman desiring to divorce her husband be held hostage of the jewish religious justice. After 12 years of asking for her divorce and waiting for her ex husband to agree to it and grant her a "Get" according to jewish religious law. Rabbinical courts should not exist anymore. Judicicial authority to Israel civil courts of law only. As for this idiot (ex husband) he will soon be caught while the poor woman is suffering, her only crime being to get with her own life and live a normal one. Israel cannot be a technological advanced country while living to the tune of the jewish mollahs.
14. why rabbinical court?
observer ,   Egypt   (03.07.13)
isn't there a system for civil documentation of marriage contracts? Before 1948 when Jews were living among Muslims, many of the Jewish women insisted on getting their marriage contracts in accordance with Islamic (Shariaa Law), because that was much in their interest. After emigration to Israel, Jewish women sufficed themselves with that "getting".
15. to #11. I agree. What's his side?
ytrewq ,   israel   (03.07.13)
Anyone who would go to such extremes must have had a good reason. According to the article "it was decided that he'll meet his children five times". So he was not allowed to see his children??
