61. silly religious coercion
geshmardo ,   jerusalem,israel   (03.19.13)
too bad for ur interests, this only hurts the worshippers of imaginary friends. God doesn't exist (6 million times) but if it would it wouldn't give a damn about ur silly mitzvoth. Religious coercion gets people further away from religion. Works for me.
62. "Him" doesn't talk to me.
geshmardo ,   jerusalem,israel   (03.19.13)
"Him" doesn't talk to me. How can I argue with an imaginary friend. Grow up, your little god stood by while 6 million were killed.
63. #16 and who are Londoner to tell us how to live in Israel?
geshmardo ,   jerusalem,israel   (03.19.13)
Poetic justice is when people react to this coercion by getting further away from your religion (your religion, my State).

Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (03.19.13)
you are badly informed on the laws of the USA. In USA, a property owner may not select tenants based on who they ==are==; he most certainly CAN select tenants based on what the tenants ==do== in the space.
65. Ora 56 , first time i hear this

Can you give FACTS ?
66. Imagine
Johnny ,   Jerusalem   (03.19.13)
Imagine if a Kosher restaurant was being closed down because the property owner wanted the proprietor to open up on Shabbat and serve non-Kosher food .. would this bother y-net ?

exUK ,   Tel Aviv   (03.19.13)
That is a great idea.If it is a "Kosher" manouvre at Pesach, why can it not be equally valid for other scenarios.Whilst we are in this mode, how about the eruv and shabbos lift and similar practices aimed at getting around the spirit of Shabbat?!!!
68. Closed on shabbat
Mo ,   Jerusalem   (03.19.13)
The landlord can do as he pleases with his property and choose the terms of the lease. The same way any business that wants to open in the mamila or malcha mall has terms dictated to them. This includes be open every day of the week for specified hours closing for Shabbat and that all the food establishments must be kosher as well. You dont like it look elsewhere. Perhaps no one calls this religious coercion because Akirov and Azrieli are not Haredi.
69. 52 Charles Not renting to a certain..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (03.19.13)
group or renting under certain conditions is a big difference.
70. Charles Would you rent to Haredim?
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (03.19.13)
Honestly?

zionist forever   (03.19.13)
US property laws and Israeli property laws are not the same so you can't say a property owner In Jerusalem is doing anything wrong just because he might not be allowed to do that if he was in the US
72. 61
zionist forever   (03.19.13)
How is this religious coercion? The owner of the property is not telling the owner of the restaurant I am religious so I want you to be religious if you want to rent my property he is only dictating some terms on how his property can or cannot be used. If its a restaurant it must serve kosher food and be closed on Shabbat etc. Its about how the property owner will allow people to operate a business on their land not does the restaurant owner personally keep kosher or shabbat.
73. Nobody is coercing anybody...
Talya ,   Ari'el, Israel   (03.19.13)
I feel like the owner of Restobar is trying to coerce me with his secular values by rubbing his mechalel-Shabbat and non-kosher restaurant in my face. What everyone keeps forgetting is that Israel is a JEWISH state, not a GOYISHE state. We should be proud that we have Torah and mitzvoth that make us different from the rest of the nations of the world. Every Jew is obligated to halacha...not just a certain segment of the population. Just because one decides not to observe it, doesn't mean you're not obligated by it. Good riddance, I hope his non-kosher business fails, and all other establishments like his. Our ancestors didn't die fighting for our traditions generation after generation just so this apikores could sell chametz in Ir HaKodesh during Pesach. What is really disgusting is that he's proud of himself too. Well, look what happens when you decide not to go in Hashem's ways...

75. Yes 8 a business can tell you when to be open
Mordechai   (03.20.13)
Actually its pretty normal for a owner of a property to place limitations on its tenants in the US. Hours of operation is a pretty typical one which often causes problems for Jewish owned businesses when they insist they be open on Saturday. I live near a local strip mall whose owner has one kosher tenant and won't allow any other restaurant to be kosher in the mall. The restaurant owner could choose to buy his own property, if he really was making money, and keep his business going. There are plenty of non kosher restaurants in Jerusalem. He is closed because his business wasn't profitable and he is using this as an excuse.
76. Restobar
yaakov ,   Israel   (03.20.13)
The new owner of the building where Restobar is located, has every legitimate right to request that Restobar be closed on Shabbat. As a religious Jew, he cannot own property which desecrates the Shabbat. This is not an "anti-secular" action on the part of the owner, BUT , the essense of mantaining the dignity of "Shabbat" in the heart of Rehavia.
77. The property owner is Jewish
Ezra ,   San Diego   (03.20.13)
Go live with the rest of the gentiles if you don't like it; move to the U.S.
78. The nation is falling apart
Taxpayer ,   Hod Hasharon   (03.20.13)
The level of hatred here just shows how far we have gone from dialogue down the path to hatred. The owner of the land may well be within his rights to impose his religious views on the restaurant - but another owner is also entitled to refuse to rent to people who want to keep kosher. Keeping the Haredi parties out of the coalition is only the first stage of the backlash, as consumers wake up to the fact that the Haredim have been threatening food manufacturers with a boycott unless they use their Hechser - and secular consumers start boycotting anything with a Haredi Hechsher. What we are witnessing is a society that is falling apart at the seams - the Religious may win by weight of numbers but it is going to be a phyrric victory as they turn Israel into Iran and a state that none of our friends and trading partners can relate to.

81. Ora , 69 . a big difference ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.20.13)
I'm ready to rent my appartement , 7th floor to a charedi family . But i oppose the use of the Shabbat elevator [ as no one need it in my building ], and will not allow a family with more than two children . My conditions .
82. 59
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.20.13)
The owner should not care about the well working of this restaurant , but because this was working well , he , most likely , received his rent on a regular base . How many businnesses are beginning somewhere , but don't work at all , the owner does not receive his rent , and has problems . To relocate a well known restaurant is not an easy task , not all the customers will follow . It's trying to impose his lifestyle on the restaurant owner . It's maybe not a charedi , but certainly a profound "believer" . I hope that he will not find a new person fort his place . Or somerone who will give him much trouble .
83. 81 Charles,i am pleasantly surprised
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (03.20.13)
by your answer.
84. 29, 30, 31 and others on Rental conditions
Akiva ,   NYC   (03.20.13)
In the USA there is a separation of Church and State and it is unlikely, for instance, that a Muslim restaurant owner could be forced to serve pork or a Jewish-owned shop could be forced to open on Shabbos. The issue isn't civil rights. The cafe could still do well even if it served kosher food and closed on Shabbos, opening again Saturday evening.
85. I applied for a job at a shop in the airport
jrebecca ,   modiin   (03.20.13)
I was told they do not employ religious people because they have to be open on Shabbat. That is against the law in this country, but it happens all the time. It's the same reason I am against public transport on Shabbat. The drivers will either have to give up their jobs or their religion.
86. Rebecca , 85
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.20.13)
The airport works 7/7 , shops there must be always open . The shop owner could make an arrangement with all his workers , to let them work Shabbat on a voluntary basis , with a higher salary . It's the way it's done abroad , people working on sunday receive a 25 or 50 % increase of their salary . Who says that the public transportantion societies will impose Shabbat work on everyone ? I think that there are many drivers who will be happy to be paid more for this day + a week day off .
87. Akiva 84
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.20.13)
There is a big difference in kosher and non kosher food , and this without using porc nor shrimps . The customers of this restaurant came there because they liked the food , the non kosher food . I like a piece of cheese after dinner , a butter on my steak . I can't receive this in a kosher restaurant .
88. 84 - forced to serve pork or ,...
split ,   US   (03.20.13)
Who the hell is talking about forcing to serve or to anything - My point is that if you have a rental property on the market for rent you're subject to rules and regulations that you can't discriminate on certain bases. For instance you can say NO to a convict or to someone with bad credit record but you can't say NO to someone because he/she have a different skin color or doesn't fit your religious profile and what comes with it, not in US ,...

exUK ,   Tel Aviv   (03.20.13)
The service of the shops and the country and its visitors must come first. In the UK, it was quite usual for the sake of political correctness, to employ Muslim pharmacists, who would leave the dispensary for 2 hours each Friday in order to visit the mosque,or leave queues of frustrated patients to be impatient whilst they disappeared to pray.On the other hand,Jewish observant pharmacists would NOT take jobs where they would be required to work on Shabbat. In other words, it should be the choice of the employee to decide if the hours of work are suitable for him or her,but not accept positions when they know that they do not intend to fulfil them.
90. 88 split As far as i know ,Israel is not
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (03.20.13)
US yet.It is a Jewish land and the owner of the restaurant is entitled to demand that the Jewish Tora laws are observed in his property.
