lead to this ridiculous situation. I was witness once on Passover, while on active duty, a group of soldiers went out hunting and brought back two wild pigs. In an act of defiance they bb'd them in the middle of the camp. Had there been sufficient food of good quality they would not have done this.

My brother who used to serve in '70's on the other side of the fence of their campsite on Sinai in UN contingent told me that they can use some soap, toilet paper and latrines too,...

It's nothing to do with the Rabbinate and everything to do with General Staff Orders. A recruit tried to steal food and assaulted a cook because the poor baby thought he was hungry. His place is not combat intelligence, it is shalishut. After 28 days inside, send the baby to be kalab close to his mommy. As for your friends. They misused their firearms and hunted without a license, both criminal acts. Don't pretend to justify it with "they were hungry": they broke the law because they wanted to hunt the pigs.

IDF stands for the army. Soldiers sometimes have to suffer too, better they get used to it. However, in the pre Passover koshering the homes, we all forgo some of the food we like, it is the twilight zone. Comparing to the situation when our forefathers were getting out from Egypt, we have nothing to complain. We should rejoice in the fact that we can celebrate Passover in freedom, no IDF recruit should forget it ever!
9. there was a food shortage
ameriCC ,   TA   (03.27.13)
didn't steal any food from the kitchen at my small outpost last week when they were kashering it for pesach because there simply wasn't any food to steal. thankfully, I had a can of peanut butter. I don't know all the details of this story, but don't be so quick to judge.
10. The The Rabbinate has no place on IDF bases
Dany Toren ,   Haifa Israel   (03.27.13)
Kick the Rabbinate off the IDF bases, they have no place there. There should be special Kosher food for those who demand it.You don't force the IDF soldiers to dance to the tune of these Rabbis. some of whom have never served in the IDF.

pull your head out of your tachat. we all know nutriton in the idf is subpar. at pessach it's especially bad.

guess you don't have anything better to write about...so sad....
13. no food at army base
iselin ,   Oslo, Norway   (03.27.13)
Instead of letting the rabbis clean the kitchen and make it kosher (I wonder how much they earn for doing that), why not let the soldiers eat everything that's left in the kitchen? Kills two birds with one stone. Gets rid of "unwanted" or "prohibited" (for whom? a minority I would guess) food and fills the tummies of the young guys on base. That would make koshering the kitchen much easier.
14. Not our parents' army
Ephraim ,   Jerusalem   (03.27.13)
The IDF today is a shell of what it used to be. This generation is a bunch of spoiled, whining brats. Shut up and do your service, and go cry to mommy when you get home about how horribly you were treated. I hope this soldier learns his lesson in jail. The story of Passover was obviously not taught to this ingrate.
15. #11 you are right
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (03.27.13)
When you are kravi in the IDF things aren't perfect. Sometimes there isn't enough food, and what there is, is inedible. There are mosquitos and biting flies, the toilets are dirty. You can't stay dry in the rain. You don't get enough sleep, it is cold at night and hot during the day. You sometimes sleep without a mattress. That's why the invented the shalishut or kirya, for the whiners and crybabies. The soldier should not have let himself get caught, he should not have attacked the poor cook, and he should have taken his punishment without crying to his mommy.
16. Wild pigs
(03.27.13)
I am speechless! I used to be on the fence about forcing chareidim to be in the IDF. Not anymore. Now I'm convinced it's impossible. With such blatant disrespect for our heritage in open display in the Army because of minor dietary restrictions, it's clearly not a tenable situation for religious boys. Better move to America- at least there they respect religion
17. equality
seth ,   deering   (03.27.13)
Why should a secular jew have to go without an ample healthful meal due to fastidiousness of religious jews? Surely arrangements can be made to accommodate both. Those who don't give a damn about Passover deserve equality with those who deem it sacred.
18. # 7 I did not try to justify
Raptor   (03.27.13)
In fact I stated that they did it in an open manner as an act of defiance. The act being provoked by the fact they they were forced to stay on active duty with no food instead of being with their families and plenty of food.
