The holocaust was truly terrible but the lesson to be learned from it isn't only about the injustice to Jews but to any group that faces ethnic extinction due to the hostile acts of other groups. If one want to understand the reasons why there has been an increase in xenophobia in Greece it goes far beyond economics to a sense many Greeks have that some other groups are literally trying to ethnically delete Greeks. The evidence for this: 1. Economic squeeze tactics that has left our country in shambles. I am a Greek Jew who survived the Holocaust in Athens. It is unfair to consider Greeks antisemitic. Yet you know that often Jews are referred to as "Ovraii". In Karagiozi which used to be popular entertainment a main character disgustingly portrayed is the Ovreos. A common name for Jews is also "Tsifouti" = Stingy. EVERY Jew in Greece has been asked more than once "Why did you kill Christ?" -- often in a hostile way. As long as such examples permeate popular Greek culture some/many people will consider Greece as antisemitic. To their credit Greeks are also hospitable and Israelis are usually welcomed as foreign visitors. Many educated Greeks admire Jewish and even Israeli achievements. All this is part of the complicated picture of two historically very important people. Greeks and Jews provided the foundation of Western civilization -- so let us respect and better understand each other.
