Why does this author fill the piece with leading questions that cherry pick facts and urge the reader to be afraid. What does the author gain? Why is there no mention of how the author makes a living? Is it because the author makes money through the creation of fear and anger? Is the author really playing to fear and hatred for personal political gain? Should the readers trust the author or their own (easily done, takes about an hour) review of primary sources? The question is what to do about it--and you can either further isolate yourselves from the world, or recognize that the only way to stay a Jewish democracy--an incredible achievement and a model state to the entire region, and even the world--is to take concrete steps towards establishing two states. Plus, strategically thinking, if you do this, and then experience violent aggression from a Palestinian state, you will have the world's support for your subsequent response. But indefinite occupation and continued settlement building will get you nowhere. It's time to put aside the right wing rhetoric and think about this logically. And logically, being paranoid about the intentions of your greatest friend and ally in the world is completely and utterly unproductive and ridiculous.

I was born in Haifa in 1938. My father was a Lebanese Moslem and my mother was a Jew from Cairo. She converted to Islam and spent many happy years with my father and brought him three children. We left Haifa in 1948 to Lebanon. I am sure I have many Jewish cousins in Israel because my mother had 3 sisters and 3 brothers. I never saw any one of them again since 1948. While growing up, we were taught to tolerate both the Jews and Arabs and hate was not in our vocabulary. Since the 1960s I have written many letters about the Arab Israeli issue that appeared in Newsweek, Time, IHT and other international newspapers and magazines. My letters were published because it seems what I had to say on the subject was important enough to justify hundreds of thousands of people reading them. I am not anti Semitic, but rather anti Zionist. In my grade school I shared my desk with a Jewish boy named Menachem. He used to bring a dark bread with cream cheese sandwich and I used to bring one with Halwa or labneh and we used to trade. We were friends. We all lived peacefully and on weekends we used to spend time with my aunts and uncles in Tel Aviv or Azizieh beach. My mother used to go shopping with me in Hadara and I used to love the Jewish hotdog that a vendor used to sell on the street. At the time, Palestinians outnumbered the Jews in Palestine. But the influx of Jews from Europe changed the ethnic balance. However, we regarded local Jews like Arabs but with Jewish religion just as those who were Moslems or Christians. My father had many Jewish friends. We all had similar culture. The European Jews, who were mostly Zionists, are the ones who changed the equation and created the hate between Palestinians and Jews. They wanted to take over and this is what they finally did with the use of force. Since then, this hate spread all over the Arab world. I am sure if the Jews at the time negotiated with the Palestinians, and only the Palestinians and not the Arab countries who were and still are useless, they would have reached a peaceful solution and continued to live together sharing a country that belonged to both people. In the 70´s I was approached several times by Israeli messengers who asked me to get involved in resolving the Israel-Palestinian issue. These messengers were sent by Aba Eban and Shamir. At the time I suggested something that no one could imagine, an Israeli-Palestinian Federation. I said then that such a Federation would become the most successful entity in the Middle East. Just imagine clever Jews and Palestinians doing business in the Arab World who were swimming with Petro Dollars and eager to develop their countries. I still think today that this is the only solution. Neither Israel nor Palestine can still exist for a much longer time with the present status quo. Israel military power is not enough to sustain the present situation. The Arab countries are getting richer and stronger and the new Arab generation of young people will no longer tolerate being humiliated by Israel. A good example is Hezbollah. Radical Islam is on the rise and the Arab Spring is engulfing the whole region. Look what is happening in Syria now. Forget the US or anyone else. No one is going to resolve this problem that has been going on since six decades but the Jews and Palestinians. Setting claim to all of Palestine is not going to work. Share this wonderful country like my parents and I shared before 1948. I am now 75 and my biggest wish is to see peace in Israel/Palestine before I die. I want to be buried in Mount Carmel near the Baha’i Temple were we lived.
