1. Stupid teacher
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (04.10.13)
These are third graders!! Their minds are not sophisticated enough to be able to understand what she was trying to show them. She ought to apologize to every one of those children she did that to. And I'm not sure she should be able to continue teaching.
2. Shocked?
Reuven ,   Netanya   (04.10.13)
I am not at all surprised by this story, I hear so much things about the educational wisdom of teachers. It's a fact that our educational system and the courses that come with it, are not even close to the curriculum in Western European countries. I went to school in Belgium and Holland and day in day out I am confronted with teachers who shouldn't be in front of a class. It makes my life as a parent extremely difficult.
3. Teach the teachers
Get Real ,   UK   (04.10.13)
This teacher needs some educating herself if this is how she teaches the subject.
4. TYPICAL HELICOPTER PARENT OVERREACTION..
stude ham   (04.10.13)
these parents need intense counseling ...
5. The teacher should be sent home...
Timlad ,   Tel Aviv   (04.10.13)
This is shocking. The teacher should be sent home... to look for another job!!
6. Political Correctness Inhibits Thinking!
Robert Blum ,   New Albany, USA   (04.10.13)
It is not stupid...My 6th. grade teacher did this to our class in order to help the children understand that bias can exclude people for reasons beyond the control of the individual, such as skin color, even though he exemplified selection using hair color. The parents are idiots to be outraged. Political correctness is a tool of the liberals, which debilitate the thinking of the masses.
7. Eze METUMTEMET!
Beni B ,   Baltimore   (04.10.13)
I am blonde too. Lets try a different game... -- So if the teacher has black hair and might even have a Morroccan background, should I assume she is an Islamic Terrorist? -- What ignorance from the teachers side!! She is showing her TRUE colors.
8. Teacher demonstrate Nazi selection
Theo Ghefner ,   Toronto Canada   (04.10.13)
Did the parents think about same age children who faced that process ?
9. Who teaches the teachers? Who reports on the reporters?
Big bad Jew ,   United States   (04.10.13)
Who leads by example?
10. The Teacher Was Misunderstood!
(04.10.13)
Did anyone bother to ask this poor teacher if she was trying to show the class the injustice of selecting people by their appearance? It is true that the blond features of the Russian students would have helped them survive in Nazi Germany. It is obvious to me that the teacher wasn't being a racist but only trying her best to show the kids that Jews look different and cannot be stereotyped.
11. How is Jewish "selection process" any different? How ironic!
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (04.10.13)
12. at # 10
Beni B ,   Baltimore   (04.10.13)
Being blonde did NOT help you survive. Also you are ignorant. Jewish features are unique. Besides, they used to check if you were circumsized or not. Shows you know nothing about what went on during the third reich.
13. Good idea, but at too young an age
R Narz ,   Toronto   (04.10.13)
When I was ten, I read "Spark of Life" by Erich Maria Remarque. (Just casually borrowed it from my father's shelves; no library of the era would loan such to a 10-y-o) It was actually a good experience, but looking back I'd say at too young an age; maybe 2 or 3 years later would have been better.
14. Political Correctness
EM ,   Ra'anana   (04.10.13)
This is ridiculous. The teacher was giving a lesson on Holocaust Remembrance day. She had a great idea how to show her class the meaning of profiling and selection. If one graphic lesson will cause these children to question their Jewishness, the problem isn't with the teacher....it's in the home. What about all the television shows on the holocaust, the books, etc... They don't have the effect?
15. Maybe it was to early
Boaz ,   Jerusalem   (04.10.13)
My 9th grade History teacher did the same experiment and I think it was very well done. (It was not in Israel). I think it gave the whole class an idea of "where would you be if you were there". But done at such young age, it's insensitive.
16. The teacher is racist & should be disciplined
Scott ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (04.10.13)
Not only did the teacher spread her racism to the students, she is wrong. The Nazis did not care about hair or skin color. They murdered anyone they suspected of being Jewish, having a Jewish background or anyone who was helping Jews.
17. It's actually effective
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.10.13)
I underwent a similar teaching event when I was in the fourth grade, except the teacher singled out left-handed students. It was amazing to see how quickly left-handed children were ostracized and treated with contempt. The object of the exercise was to show how insignificant differences -- hair color, eye color, handedness -- can trigger a herd response by the "preferred" group. Amazing how people who used to be your friends can turn and ignore you just because you are left-handed. It afforded, I thought then and think now, great insight into how so many people could instantly turn on Jews -- and despite their denials following the war, we all know what happened. Herd mentality. Except they all turned on the Jewish people, not left-handed people.
18. Reaction
Anna ,   Montreal, Canada   (04.10.13)
The teacher wasn't misunderstood, and the 3rd grader's mind was sophisticated enough to start asking very mature questions. The most important fact that the readers miss from this article is in the paragraph that says " The day after, he told me that one of the girls said that he and the rest of the blond children are German." The aftermath of this unprofessional lesson is much deeper in the minds of these kids regardless of their skin color. Holocaust documentaries have enough power to explain the same philosophy that this teacher tried to present to the students.
19. Why all the fuss? There is no genetic connect with ancient
World Watcher   (04.10.13)
Hebrews. "Strictly speaking it is incorrect to call an ancient Israelite a ‘Jew’ or to call a contemporary Jew an Israelite or a Hebrew." (1980 Jewish Almanac, p. 3).
20. to #15
Rina50 ,   Haifa, Israel   (04.10.13)
This uneducated teacher did the same, that Nazi's did. She put some poor kids with blond hair and profiled them. This kids where too small to understand. And this teacher shouldn't teach anyone, especially kids. First she didn't know the real WWII history and second she didn't know Holocaust history at all. Doesn't matter what the color of hair or skin Jews have. They didn't look on faces, they looked in their faces. Germans knew very well who is Jew and who is not. And the blond hair didn't saved 25,000,000 of Soviet people, whom where killed in WWII. This teacher should be fired, for putting this kids in a harm way.
21. The point is.....
Raoul ,   Herzliya. Israel   (04.10.13)
the illustration was totally inappropriate for third graders. It appears the teacher was woefully ignorant of this. I would say she needs some instruction, at least in that direction.
22. #12
simon marriott ,   haifa, Israel   (04.10.13)
Firstly Jewish features are far from unique. Have you ever been to Israel? Secondly, not all Jews are circumsized. My wife, for example is not.
23. Teacher was TRYING to do the right thing
Dave ,   Montreal, Canada   (04.10.13)
...but in such a wrong way. Kids are kids, if you give them a rock, they will throw it at somebody. The teacher should never have singled out students in the class. It should have remained abstract.
24. How many non-Jews died in Holocaust? Tens of millions.
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (04.10.13)
Why do Jews only count Jews in Holocaust?
25. This is the outcome...
Avi ,   NYC, US   (04.10.13)
...of years of cheap theatrics regarding the holocaust: Beauty contests for holocaust survivors... An astronaut goes to space carrying pictures and a Torah from the holocaust.. Looking for Nazis under every rock... What do you want from this poor teacher? She is a victim of the psychodrama that is forced on every Israeli.
26. teacher demonstrates.....
hodiya ,   Wien   (04.10.13)
it is so clear that this reacher has a personal story and problems here and she projects her hurts and rage on innocent chilrdren in a way that children at this age anyway cannot understand. why did she select on ly russian blonds, there are plenty israelis that are not russian. there is a lot of personal stuff that she diguised by putting it in the holocaust story that has nothing to do with it.besides that a teacher should be much more empathic and know that children are so open and vulnerable and you can see from the reaction how this ends up- she played with fire and she burnt a lot.
27. Teacher demostrates Nazi selection
mara klarinsky ,   ashdod   (04.10.13)
This teacher is not a teacher, she can not work as an educator, and has to be removed from school, it is really shameful her attitude. How she can compare one of our children with the Nazis? or insinuate this?. The direction has to take inmediately care of this topic.
28. parents overreaction
FF ,   Rio de Janeiro,Brazi   (04.10.13)
I don't see such big deal. the teacher was giving example how nazi would behave. For sure it's a lesson the kids won't forget. And it's good lesson for the kids to think about descrimination.
29. Mizrachim!
Dany ,   Rehovot   (04.10.13)
In this country we have a serious problem with a certain part of the population Mizrachi, extremely resented an self-conscious that fails to adapt to the modern Israeli society.
30. Any other day would have been fine
Jacob E ,   Holon, Israel   (04.10.13)
On any other day you can show this demonstration and it is just a demonstration, but not Yom HaShoah
