Dreyfus was a noble man, honorable and principled, material from which heroes are made. Before Dreyfus there was Berl Yosefovich (spelling?) in Poland who organized a group of secular Jews to serve under Napoleon. While religious Jews objected to Napoleon's efforts to draft them, Berl Yosefovich heroically went against leaders of Jewish communities in Poland and found secular Jews to serve along with him. It did not stave antisemitism from developing in Napoleon-period France after population there learned of religious Jews' opposition to helping in the war effort..
