Oh, I'm all for Torah study. I think every man should do a seven-year Talmud study cycle. I just don't think we need thousands of such "students." Think of it this way -- everyone wants to study at The Technion or at Hebrew University, but not everyone can, and some have to make do with lesser venues. Can we pick the top one hundred Torah scholars, fund their study, and let the others work for a living? Nothing wrong with that, is there? If they want to study Torah, then let them do it on their own dime. The Israeli taxpayer should not have to pay for the care and feeding of a wannabe Torah scholar who doesn't quite make the grade, yet who produces ten or more children in the process of his "studies."
