1. For once, I agree with Deri
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.26.13)
No one deserves to be on a banknote more than Eli Cohen, z"l. No one.
2. 100% true.
Gill ,   Hashmonaim   (04.26.13)
Shame on us.
3. Playing with fire
Misha ,   Tel Aviv   (04.26.13)
Deri is a tiresome whiner, a professional bellyacher. His "defense" of mizrachim is dangerous. Thank God he is not in the government.
4. Why no Mizrahim on...
Toledano Jean-Pierre ,   Israel   (04.26.13)
Aryeh Deri is right. Why not Mizrahim or Maghrebim on a banknote? A large part of my family came from North Africa, Middle East and South Asia. They are all hard working, correct people,… not corrupt, not taking bribes,…. You're right, Mr. Deri, they, they,... deserve to see one of their group on an Israeli bank note.
5. Deri is right
zionist forever   (04.26.13)
They intentionally made the new bills poets rather than politicians because some were considered controverisal based on right and left wing political attitudes. They decide to go with less politcally sensitive poets and don't even include a single Mizraahi. There should be a revamp so at least one Mizrahi appears on the notes. If we were going to have individuals it should have been people who did things for the country. Ilan Ramon, Yonni Netanyahu, Eli Cohen and another non political figure whose achievements have earned them a spot on the banknotes. If not then lets have representations of people who represent Israel today. A computer programer, a doctor etc. Representations of 21 century Israel.
6. Right on Deri
Hertzel ,   Tveria   (04.26.13)
As a Tveriani, I can tell you he is absulutely telling the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth !!!! They kept Tveria as poor to it's Mizrahim population as can be, NEVER alocated any development funds, till the Sinai was returned and Ashkenazim "had" to visit the Kineret. Israeli Ashkenazim are aware of this, and most of them do not fight it... shame ! More than half of Likud voters are Sefaradim/Mizrahim (cause they understand the arab enemy better than the ashkenazim that are home to 90% of Israel left) So, they use us and dump us....as needed....
7. For once I agree with Sarah B

8. Ashkenazocentric Israel
Dr. M. Cohen ,   Miami, FL USA   (04.26.13)
Decades ago, in my student days, I worked at the Prime Minister's office as a conference assistant. My first day on the job my boss told me a "joke": that "the poet Hayyim Nachman Bialik hated Arabs because they reminded him of Mizrachim." Not sure whether it is true, but it certainly is indicative of Ashkenazic prejudice. I didn't think it was funny even back then and that sort of "respectable racism" is one of the reasons I left Israel. Things obviously haven't changed much after all these years. BTW, there are no Americans on Israeli currency either. (If you think that it is because no Americans played a role in Israel's early history, you are mistaken.)
9. I Resent The Fact
Ariel ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim   (04.26.13)
B"H - I resent the fact that they print "shekel" on these kneset bills, not only the faces they use to decorate them. "Shekel" is a Torah quantity of real money and calling these printed papers "shekel" is part of the best deception effort of the century: Zionism.
10. To Deri
Ariel ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim   (04.26.13)
B"H - Because they are what they are: Atheist Askhenazim: Don't participate in their institutions, get out from their "politics"!
11. Dr. Cohen
Hertzel ,   Tveria   (04.26.13)
Thank you Dr. Cohen, you said it all !!! And as to the crude "joke" I also heard it quoted before, it must have been said....Bialik was known in his anti sepharadi racist nature, but yet he "adorned" Israle money DECADES ago. Lapid seems to wake the race Jeanie out of the bottle, so far he is doing a great job....LOL
12. Wondered how long it would take Deri
Danny   (04.26.13)
To start blaming everything on "Askenasi elite". Doesn't he have a cash register somewhere to steal from?
13. For once I agree with Aryeh Deri
clara   (04.26.13)
We need more representation of sephardim & mizrahim. And these new bills look terrible, the tourists are gonna make fun of them
14. A missed opportunity to promote IL
Claude ,   London, GB   (04.26.13)
If the banknotes featured pictures of famous sites, buildings and places that had meaning for ALL throughout IL this would be less controversial , certainly more attractive and at least foreign visitors could admire the notes I suggest kinneret , Dead Sea Red Sea and The Med with some fauna and flora thrown in for good measure Just heard that Winston Churchill will feature on a new £ note
15. After all, why not put Katsav on a 50 Shekel note!
lucifer69   (04.26.13)
16. To # 1
Abdel Karim Salim ,   Jerusalem   (04.26.13)
How would you like to see on Palestinian banknotes those who carried out the Munich act of 1972 or the girl who hijacked an Egged bus in 1978 and drove it all the way from Ma'agan Michael to Tel Aviv before blowing it up ?
17. Deri is NOT right
(04.26.13)
The founders of the state and its artists, thinkers etc. were Ashkenazim. They formed the charcter of the state. The poets chosen are among the most important poets of the Jewish yishuv before and after 1948. their poets are the backbone of the Israeli culture. Not to include them will be a descrimination. There is no Mizrahi poet who equals their importance and quality of work.
18. # 17
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (04.26.13)
Post #17 is the proof that there is real racism in Israel to my great sorrow. In this case, as in no other, Deri is right, if only to at least begin to educate the population of the contributions made by Sephardim and Mizrachi immigrants to the State.
19. re: Abdelkarim abu Stalingrad
HaifaGuy   (04.26.13)
Palestinians as well as many of their fellow muslim nations name streets, city squares, brodges etc. after murderers such as the ones you have mentioned, so what is your point, Mr. Paulus?
20. 14
zionist forever   (04.26.13)
The first series of the Lira did exactly that and I really do think they were the nicest because they showed scenes like the Negev and Galilee with pictures of old synagogues on the back. After that they went over to pictures of politicians and famous zionists. I have always preferred the views of Israel because they are neutral and look nicer than a politician or a poet. If they were going to have pictures of people then why non political people who have done things for Israel or representations of Israel today. A computer programer, a satellite, a doctor etc. These sort of things represent either people who have done great things for the country so their inclusion cannot be criticised or symbolic figures who represent something in 21 century Israel. Its good we are getting away from the politicians but its time we replaced them with either people who are there because of recognisable things they have done for the country or landscapes.
21. Deri is a demagogue
Joel ,   Ossining, NY   (04.26.13)
These ae great Hebrew literary figures - we can all be proud of them as Jews. Its time to get over these distinctions between sephardic and askanazy. If Deri really cared about the mizrachim - he would make sure that their schools taught subjects that would make them able to compete with the best. All shas cares about is its own power and keeping its members in ignorance - it is not a friend of the sephardim.
22. To: No. 16
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.26.13)
I'm quite gratified to see that you are admitting that you people are a bunch of vile terrorists. On the other hand, I don't think you have very much of anything to worry about, since there will never be an independent ersatz "Palestinian" state, unless it is Jordan. And I could care less who you might put on your banknotes -- people who name streets, buildings and plazas after despicable terrorists can do whatever they want with their money -- which would be worthless anyway. The short answer is -- take whatever action with imaginary banknotes that you like.
23. To: No. 17
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.26.13)
And how did they ensure the survival of the Jewish state? By writing wistful poetry? I don't think so. But I have a very good idea why you chose to remain nameless.
24. Dear Mr. Deri
Sagi   (04.26.13)
Perhaps you would like the following gallery, in the future of course. At the moment I can't recall any deceased ones who would merit the honor. 200 note, Katzav. 100 note, Peretz. 50 note, Ben Yizri. 20 note, Vanunu. Great Mizrahim whose contribution to the state has been breathtaking.
25. #16, you already name your streets after terrorists
Jake ,   USA   (04.26.13)
Honoring terrorists on your money would be no different. Palestine is a terrorist entity. It must never become a state. It must be uprooted and destroyed.
26. Israel is an Ashkenazi country
(04.26.13)
Sephardic PM's=0 Sephardic Presidents=1 (in jail for rape) The country was established on European values and principles, and one only needs to research how Yemeni children were declared dead with live parents, upon their arrival in Israel and then given to European Jews to understand it.
27. Because us Ashkenazim are an ethnicity of superior intellect
David ,   UK   (04.26.13)
28. To # 19 , 22 , & 25
Abdel Karim Salim ,   Jerusalem   (04.26.13)
Yeh , just make me laugh ...Look at your streets and buildings named after Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Shamir , Ariel Sharon, Jabotinsky , Rehabam Ze'evi , etc... Just tell me : are you any better ?
29. Respond to #1
Joe Mevorah ,   Lincoln, U.S.A,   (04.26.13)
The law of averages caught up with you Sarah. You got one right.
30.  There was a portrait of a Sephardi...
Buckwheat ,   US   (04.26.13)
Rambam used to be on the 10 (?)shekel banknote . If the new series of banknotes was planned to honor Israeli writers/ poets, then ... which Sephardic writer/poet of the 20th century would you propose to put on one? A future series of military figures might rightfully include Sharon ( Askenazi), Adam ( Caucasian Mountain Jew), Eitan ( ethnically of Russian descent):-) and Elazar ( Sephardic). Perhaps, after 65 years and countless Sephardic/Ashkenazi intermarriages the issue might be put to rest? My 3 grandkids wouldn't know how to "classify" themselves anyway :-)
