31. So this is what it has come to....
Shadoil ,   Jerusalem   (04.29.13)
A chiloni telling ME what to do in my bedroom for the sake of FINANCE???? HELLO TALK ABOUT COERCION !!!!!
32. Simple economics, not demographics..
Amichai ,   Huntsville, US   (04.29.13)
It has nothing to do with a war on Haredi kids, it has to do with economics. All the pro-Haredis are saying non-Haredis are prejudiced against the Haredis. The simple truth is that it's mathematically impossible for the explosive growth rate of the Haredi to be sustained by secular taxes over time. What happens if the Haredi vision of the future comes to pass? Say the attain 80% of the population - is it possible for 20% to financially support 80% and still survive? What the proponents of the scheme are effectively saying is that it's ok for the Haredim to enslave the rest of the population, because that's what will happen. For all the talk of the Haredim saying they have "sharper minds", they completely fail at math. And as for their argument of being more moral, they completely condone enslavement. If they're so devout then maybe they should recall Pirkei Avot/Ethics of the Fathers which would apply to this scenario "Love work, and despise official positions, and do not become too acquainted with the governing power." (1:10) "Torah learning is best combined with an occupation, because the effort of both will keep one from sin. Torah study alone without work will in the end be nullified and lead to sin." (2:2)
33. USA also has an ultra-religious sector with large families
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego, USA   (04.29.13)
And they are similarly very strict about sabbath observance and about what they eat and drink. But the ultra-religious in the US also gladly serve in the army, work hard and pay taxes, and are extremely loyal to the state. That is because they are Mormons, Pentacostal Baptists and Mennonites. Unlike the ultra-religious in Israel, they are not parasites who live off the sweat of others, refuse to pay taxes, steal welfare money, refuse military service and who spit on the Israeli State (when they are not spitting on little girls). Yes, we have haredi Jewish sects in the US, like the Satmar - BUT WE DO NOT PUT UP WITH THEIR CRAP!!! They must register for Selective Service at age 18, or they go to jail. If they want welfare support which they can prove they need, they must accept work ("workfare") of lose benefits. If they are caught cheating on welfare or stealing benefits, they are prosecuted as criminals. Never in the history of the Jewish people have we had a class of full-time "Torah scholars" who don't work. Haredi Israel is a cult, made possible by their recent political power, created by a fault in Israel's voting system. Israel should require 5-10% vote thresholds in a primary election, before any party is allowed to run for national office, eliminating blackmail by tiny parties like the haredim.More importantly, welfare recipients or those who refuse to work or serve in the army or take an oath of loyalty to the Jewish State of Israel should not have the right to vote or run for office. In the US, welfare theft is a crime that cancels your voting rights. Refusal to register for Selective Service is also a crime that cancels voting rights. All state and national government workers and politicians must take a loyalty oath to the USA. Adopting these measures will solve this haredi problem and the sickening disloyalty of many Israeli Arabs as well. Israel has spoiled its rejectionists with too much political power to abuse, time is past-due to fix that. They shape up or they get out. With the haredim now out of the government, now is the time to act.
34. DEMOGRAPHICS
Brian ,   Los Angeles   (04.29.13)
The author is a fool. We very much should encourage a high birthrate, otherwise the Arabs will outbreed us and destroy us. Fools like this author, who have 2 kids, will be the end of this country. Haredim need to start working, but they should certainly not stop having kids. Discouraging them from doing so would mean the end of Israel. Period.
35. To no 3
Rivkah ,   Jerusalem   (04.29.13)
Yes He Does, But I could answer you the same way, as a working tax paying charedi I am paying for your kids free education while I have to pay privately for my kids education... and I am not the only one. So dear, we are paying out of our own pockets and I think that if things were really put on the table people would be quite startled to see what the truth is.
36. number4
Tracey Stone ,   israel   (04.29.13)
an israel where no one has any employment choices or abilities because they never studied maths, science etc an israel with an army that is impoverished and lacked in technical abilities needed to outclass its enemies. your argument is SO flawed number 4 . there will not be an israel in fifty years because of the haredim bob, there will be an israel because of the people who work - dati leumi, secular - same reason there has been an israel since 1948. G-d gave us the abilities to be here - it wasnt reproduction
37. This absurd article is, in reality, arguing
Reuven   (04.29.13)
for the destruction of Israel. We need a high Jewish birthrate. And Lapid is an impediment to that.
38. Arabs Will Outnumber Jews
dave ,   safet israel   (04.29.13)
Israel is the only country with a positive Jewish birthrate. If not for the ultra orthodox large families, Arabs will outnumber Jews in a generation
39. To No 35
Jim Tel-Aviv   (04.29.13)
Wow. I never knew that my existence and well-being of my two kids is covered by taxes of of Rivkah from Jerusalem. I though that my own hard work of the last 22 years and taxes I paid cover that. Wait - my kids get free education and you pay for have to pay privately for what exactly? Are you joking?
40. response to 30
jon bergman ,   jerusalem israel   (04.29.13)
open pirkei avot. read. realize that one who says whats mine is mine and whats yours is yours is a .....drum roll........ a rasha i believe.... the gemara also says that those believe that those who learn torah are learning for their own sake, and not for the benefit of the world, is a kofer and has no share in the world to come. and to all the apikorsim and reshaim out there, i hope you lose all your money , that way you can have a kaparrah and not lose in the world to come.
41. not only the Haredim are the target
Toledano Jean-Pierre ,   Israel   (04.29.13)
I didn't hear something about the effects on the Muslims and in particularly on the Islamists in Israel. Also they have too many children… and also it costs a lot of money to the state. Like the Haredim the majority of the Muslims prefer not to serve in the army, because even they have the Israeli nationality they don't like Israel. The Haredim have a similar problem: they are against the Jewish, Zionist state,… because G'd wasn't involved in the creation of this Israel. But, they - the Islamists and the Haredim - like to have all the profits (social security, health care,…) from that secular Israeli state. If, I should not agree with that secular Israel - even there are no buses, trains,… on Shabbat,… -, then I wasn't living here. You have to be consequent with yourself. If the Arabic, Muslim community continues to growing because of their many children, then, in 20, 30,… years they will maybe not have the majority but enough votes… to bring into the Knesset much more Tibi-like MPs, G'd forbid,… so a significant reduction of the child (financial) support can stop that trend. Thanks a lot, Lapid,... And are the families with a lot of children paying more or less taxes? It's not important, but what I know: I (we) have to spare many years to buy a little or medium-sized car, while I see the religious people driving with big cars and not the cheapest ones. Maybe, for them (the Haredim) the Zionist state is a perfect cash cow or...the golden calf! Oi, a new cult of the golden calf?
42. Actually, #40, Jon Bergman
Vered, Israel   (04.29.13)
The rasha is the one who says, "What is yours is mine, and what is mine is mine" (um, kinda like the Hareidm's economic plan). The guy who says what's mine is mine and what's yours is yours is considered to be the average guy. But the point here is, who cares what the Sages said? That's the whole point of all of this. Those of us who disagree with the Sages' interpretation of Judaism do not want to pay for whole neighborhoods of people to sit and learn. If we agreed that their prayers are the only thing keeping us from destruction, we'd gladly want to support them, but we think our prayers are just as heard by God as theirs.
43. its all about hatred
ma nishma ,   modiin   (04.29.13)
nothing new or complex, the Lapid family hates religious people because deep down inside they know that there is a G-d in the world and the religious remind them that the Lapid family will end up in Hell. So say it out loud instead of making appear that the charadim are eating the food off of our tables.
44. Family allowances/child benefits
Frank Adam ,   Prestwich, UK   (04.29.13)
May I suggest one way to curb fake divorce abuse of welfare among the Beduin, and cynical anti-state attitudes among the pompously "religious" would be to limit child benefit to the first three children of any one father, but if all three children are of the same sex (1/8 chance) then pay the welfare for the fourth child (1/16 chance of being the same sex as the previous three). Such a system would allow those with one divorce to have a second family; should make some ladies more cautious; and make having four or more children a financial success brag on Thorsten Veblen's, "conspicuous consumption," psychology.
45. the problem they dont serve in the armee

46. No23 so what? It's 21st century...

loudly than an empty stomach.
49. To # 43
Joe Mevorah ,   Lincoln, U.S.A.   (04.29.13)
The haredim are eating the food off Israels tables. It needs to stop. The Lapid family has the right to decide for itself if it wishes to be religious or not. So does everyone else, YOU IDIOT.
50. 49 Why sign "you"instead of joe?
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (04.29.13)
51. Children
Odd Myrland ,   Norway   (04.29.13)
I hope that what is now forced through is not that there will be an Arab majority in Israel some years ahead.
52. #23 So, they won't - big deal !!!!!
Peter   (04.30.13)
53. #31
Airborne ,   Jerusalem   (04.30.13)
Are u really that shallow? Is that what u took from the article? If you want kids - pay for them. I can't pay for my kids and subsidize yours. You can have all the kids u want. You just have to pay for them yourself.
54. Not from our pockets
Roxy ,   Israel   (04.30.13)
I have a question. If the Haredi men living in the USA and Europe can work full time to support their large families and still find time to study Torah as well; how come the Haredi men here cannot do the same? Are the Haredi men here superior to their bretheren outside of Israel?
55. #11 birthright?
Airborne ,   Jerusalem   (04.30.13)
What about my kids birthright? I work and pay for MY kids. I shouldn't have to pay for yours as well. You ate the epitome of chutzpah.
56. #11
Airborne ,   Jerusalem   (04.30.13)
Who are u to decide how much $ someone makes? What is plenty? Someone who finds a cure for a disease shouldn't get paid? What about someone who employs hundreds? Is that what they teach you while learning Talmud? Take from others? I'll pay for my kids and you pay for yours!
57. #11 shows the chasm between the world view of seculars and H
Shachar Shalev ,   Eilat   (04.30.13)
Instead of attacking the Talmudic sage I would like to thank him for the insight into the Haredi mindset. I know you truly believe that your studies are more important than the army or any other consideration. But a majority of the population do not share your faith in this matter and do not want to support it financially. I do want you to live the life you believe in but you must find a way to support this lifestyle within your community. Haredi communities all over the world have succeeded in doing so, you can too.
58. Apples and oranges
Airborne ,   Jerusalem   (04.30.13)
Everyone is talking past one another. The fear of demographics, religious hatred et al. does not change the debate that forcing every family in Israel (Jew/x-ian/druze/arab etc)to support another family's lifestyle - be it religious or not - is absolutely insane. THAT is not social justice. What do the Chrsitians say???? Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish feed him for life. There is no religious ruling or secular law that requires me to support another family outside of my own. If you try to shape the debate any other way you are being intellectually dishonest.
59. Airborn.. I doubt its a real talmudic sage
Lya ,   Modiin   (04.30.13)
So chill a bit... Someone just writing out of hate.
60. Yes from yours ,...
split ,   US   (04.30.13)
