1. Every 'turning point' is a waste point. Constitution needed.

Israel is like a leaf blowing in a storm. Without defining itself Israel makes mistake after mistake and then needs 'turning points' to correct the wasted ways. Smarter countries have defined themselves at the points of their establishment and have written constitutions which guide countries' existence.
In the meantime, Israel has the most wasteful Knesset debates because Knesset members don't do what is required of them: to guide the country in accordance with principles set in a constitution. The Knesset is a waste and with it the entire country knows not where it is going.

What an idiotic statement! I would like this writer to demonstrate how funding Haredi education at 65% of public school funding and making child welfare payments, something that every Western European country does, is called controlling the economy. Even though together, these 2 parties hold just as many seats as Yesh Atid has now, they were never awarded the finance ministry, or the education ministry. What nonsense!

5. There will only ever be
one turning point in Israeli politics, and indeed the fate of the nation, when true democracy will be initiated. For this to happen the following are required.
A referendum asking the citizens, all of them from the age of 16, what kind of political system do they want, presidential or proportional representation.
A constituition drafted and presented to the people for approval.
I stress, these things must be decided by the people, not by politicians. Only when this happens will there be a pivotal point in our nation's history and a chance of Israel becoming a normal society, all else is futile and serves only the politicians as opposed to the body politique.

The overwhelming majority of Jews must be citizens of Israel before a constitution can be voted on.

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

1. In other countries followers of ultra -orthodoxy work for a living.
2.The Haridim in Israel act as a privileged class expecting the rest of society to support their families, schools etc. without in any way contributing to the exchequer or aiding in it's defense.
3. The Haridim in government have prevented the establishment of a civil constitution on religious grounds.
4. It is not necessary for all Jews to live in Israel to formulate a civil constitution for itself.

As some other commenters I also do not think a two party block would serve Israel well. Actually I do not think any party politics would Israel well, one of the great mistakes the country is committing is trying to copy "western democracy". It is becoming clearer each day in the global crisis that the present form of "free democracy", party politics prevalent in western nations has exhausted itself as it left every original democratic ideals, it has become self serving, basically in a distorted way benefiting a very small minority at the expense of the majority.
The optimal solution would be direct, transparent, public representation and a governing system based on different levels of round table discussions leading to common, mutual decisions above personal benefit and interest.
Israel is ideally suited for such system based on historical experience and our writings.

I tend to agree with most of what you write here. I tend to be more sanguine than you about the potential advantages of a referendum in Israel. I fear that the outcome would reflect the majority of talkbackers here in YNET...people who are more influenced by their gut emotions rather than an intelligent appraisal of situation. Referendums seem to function better in the comparative detachment of Western society as opposed to the more primitive emotionalism of Israel.

Baruch, did you just get up yesterday, after sleeping for 100 years. In todays volatile times, where anything can happen, any day of the week, and you write such a naive, dream article about the re-creation of the Right & Left/Center to rule. I would suggest you go back to sleep.

I do not propose a permanent situation where all major decisions are taken by referneda, only that it should happen for the two points I stated previously, change of electoral and governmental system and a constitution, pivotal points in the future of any nation. A democracy, by the mere etymology of the word, means that the elected government does the will of the people and not as it pleases and sees fit when the people do not agree. Democracy does not stop at the ballot box, it must have continuation. A prime example would be Thatcher who fought the power of the Unions because it was necessary for progress and it was what most people wanted. On the other hand she had to relent on the poll tax, again because it was the wish of the people. True democracy in Israel does not exist because of the complete disconnection between the people and the government. The ballot box is the start and the end of the democratic process. This must be corrected and I can give numerous ways and examples by which this can be done but first and foremost is a radical change and a constitution.

15. End Left Wing Media's Complete Control

One of the most debilitating factors
is the continuing complete control
over public opinion by the left wing
electronic media "stars" who managed to bring the delusion of the Oslo "peace" Process through their brainwshing of the public costing the lives and limbs of thousands. These
dangerous naive "stars" backed by
media moguls depend on the public
buying their simple and oft repeated
peace jingles along with their products
There must be a balanced responsible
electronic media that will truley inform
the public of the dramatic and perhaps
dangerous course ahead for the nation

Or two blocs - right-center and left. The lefts socialist philosophy has been totally discredited. Their attemts at peace have fallen flat as have those of the right and center but at least the right has abandoned the "one more Israeli concession and we'll have peace" attitude of the left.
