1. Women are not men!
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (05.06.13)
Why extend IDF service for women to be equal with men? Women are not men and there is no need to do the same service. Have women themselves asked for this innovation?
2. Reduced service time
Get Real ,   UK   (05.06.13)
Seems a strange time to announce this even for 2 years hence. With the current unsettled situations on Israel's northern borders and Iran hope it does not send out the wrong messages of any weakening to Israel's enemies. At least this should have been balanced by mentioning improvements in in efficiency, weaponary etc
3. #1 Gender equality ensures that women after IDF
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (05.06.13)
who are otherwise qualified, must choose between obtaining a doctorate or having a family and children before their biological clock stops. They need those years to get their doctorate AND still have time on their biological clock to have a family. Men aren't under that clock. So it's gender INequality.
4. Every Israeli and his sister knows, that there never was/is

shortage of able-bodied soldiers in this country. The glaring unfairness of having only a small portion of population doing most of the duty was result of laziness & unwillingness to deal with large masses of people as opposed to a relatively lean & mean group of fools willing to put up with the situation, period.- and don't let any populistic politician tell you otherwise.
5. Reply to 3: Family and Doctorates
Carol ,   Israel   (05.06.13)
Most doctoral students at Weizmann Institute are married and have children. They are smart enough not to ignore their biological clocks, and they are wise enough to have a life in addition to their studies and work. Having a satisfying and full life only contributes to their success.
6. NO NO, female soldiers R already doing ENOUGH. tnx.
Big Mouth ,   On the face   (05.06.13)
7. #5 And how many of them spent 3 yrs in IDF oh wise one?
Israeili Jew ,   Israel   (05.06.13)
And how old are they -- while STILL working on Ph.D.? And how old will they be when -- and if -- they get their Ph.D. And compare that to the males age obtaining a Ph.D. I hope the potential doctoral students are thinking in greater depth than you did.

israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (05.06.13)
The "lean and mean" group are not fools or friarim. They are the best we have, the ones privileged to do what Jews could not 70 years ago. The lazy and unwilling masses? They are nothing but bars of soap with no dignity. I pity them, but would rather not have them dirty the IDF uniform.
9. #1-8 Am I the only one who read the article?
Ze'ev ,   USA   (05.06.13)
It says that service time for MEN will be REDUCED to equal that of women, not that women will be serving longer.
10. equal service
Leonard ,   Green River, USA   (05.06.13)
actually quite brilliant & innovative. There are many "jobs" in the military that can be learned quickly & easily & the soldier can then be tranferred to the reserves rather than give him, or her busy work just to do his or her "time" in uniform. OTOH some jobs require long periods of intensive training, and experience to be totally proficient. And that should take precidence over gender &"a one size fits all" when it comes to serving one's time in uniform.
11. #9 Read the article; u didn't grasp the posts
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (05.06.13)
Equal time in military minus biological clock for women wanting to obtain graduate degrees never evens out. Crunch the numbers until u get it.

13. Sherlock #1, Read the article CAREFULLY.
Jake   (05.06.13)
It does not say anywhere that the service for women will be extended. It says that the length of service for men will be reduced. Moreover it says: "Army unveils plan that will see length of service determined by position, not gender. "
