1. Suits must also cover their hands.
Michael ,   California, USA   (05.23.13)
Hands can look sexy to women, so they must be covered. Besides, people who do nothing, don't need hands. They also don't think and their unused heads are fully covered. The world of Haredim makes a lot of sense.
2. Just when I thought these loony-tunes couldn't be more
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (05.23.13)
out of touch with reality -- they dig a deeper pit to lower the bar.
3. A bath a shave and a job may make them normal heaven forbid
Al   (05.23.13)
4. A male's desire is more alarming to women who wish to avoid
Rivkah   (05.23.13)
seduction. Desire is not covered by a garment. It is spiritual and needs to be addressed with a spiritual garment for the harmful thoughts to others from the mind. Being careful what one hears or sees or smells or does are all garments or coverings to protect themselves and others from sins. But the outer garments of males and females should certainly be modest if one's goal is to have HaShem's favor. True, King David danced naked in the streets of Jerusalem on returning from a battle. But that was an offense to his wife Michal, King Saul's daughter, who was embarassed. So it was wrong for David to dance naked in the streets. Adam and Eve were naked in the garden of Eden, but the Lord wore garments there. We must strive to be like the Lord not like people who rebelled against the Lord.
5. More anti-gentilism
Mike   (05.23.13)
The whole Torah is full of hatred toward non-Jews.
6. LOL!!! What about leotards?
Devorah   (05.23.13)
Since leotards are not pants, does this mean they a go?
7. Brits please note:
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (05.23.13)
In the UK pants are what you wear under your trousers, whereas in the USA pants are you trousers, and your pants are therefore known as your underpants. A UK vest equals a USA undershirt, while a British waistcoat is a USA vest.
8. #1: jewish law says must cover elbows
david ,   new york   (05.24.13)
the laws of modesty apply to both men and women and it applies to all jews, not just haredim.
9. I agree, they should wear a niqab
kippa seruga ,   Israel   (05.23.13)
10. Reply to number 2 modesty in clothing
Danny ,   London England   (05.23.13)
Here in London a mainstream non-Jewish school said that its school uniform trousers must not be tight and gave various other modesty rules to put off paedophiles. Most parents agreed with the policy, aside from a few 'loony-tunes'..
11. #5: clearly quite ignorant
david ,   new york   (05.24.13)
both the written and the oral torah are not anti-gentile. jews are G-d's chosen people, but there is clearly an understanding that there are both righteous and sinful non-jews. jews are instructed to be different so as not to assimilate into the culture of the non-jews and to remain loyal to G-d's commandments to them. the talmud is replete with describing both the good and the evil of gentiles.
12. Give me a BREAK !
Big Mouth ,   On the face   (05.23.13)
wearing tight pants emphasizes the shape of one's body, which may entice women.
13. Defining Themselves Based on Secularism?
ASDF ,   ASDF   (05.23.13)
So the "other" they quoted is a secular, right? So basically they're defining their wardrobe based on whatever the seculars are doing? Interesting. So if people in TLV start wearing huge pants, they'll go back to tight?
14. #8 No, "Jewish law" doesn't
Israeili Jew ,   Israel   (05.24.13)
You'll find your source is, wait for it... medieval European.
15. Well,good thing I'm not a member of their community
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (05.24.13)
As if I don't given them enough reason to ostracize me, I do wear "close-fitting trousers", most of the jeans variety. What can I say, I'm a slender guy and I like them. (And yes, I do wear suits when the occasion requires.)
16. To talback 13
Jgad ,   Israel   (05.24.13)
Something like that. Most analysts believe Bible clothes for men were tunics or long dresses, considering that women used to dress also like that, pants became the modern style clothes for religious men. Because women like to follow what men do, actually women love to wear pants but not the religious women of course. Men do not want to return to wear tunics instead of pants because in modern society they could be confused with gays, and to avoid that perception men have select the option, pants and also tunics or long jackets. You just have to use logic. You never watched the film legally blond lol?
17. Hasidism is a cult
Naftali ,   Seattle, WA   (05.24.13)
They are just like any other fundamentalist groups that practices exclusions and keeping to themselves, control people's lives, making proclaimations about being righteous, and being a "Torah True Jews" and telling women how they are suppose to live their lives out of oppression is to say they are a cult in Israel.
18. 15 Raymond: Testicles in a scrotum hang away from the body
Rivkah   (05.24.13)
to have a lower temperature than 98.6 degrees Fehrenheit for a reason. Dresses are better suited for males than tight jeans and underwear and pants. Fertility is down and one reason the looser fitting slacks wearers among the Jews have more children and fewer fertility problems is they don't try to remake what God designed the testicles to be: suspended, slightly away from the body for a lower temperature. In what ancient culture did males wear tight fitting attire around the scrotum? This is a modern phenomenon, part of the reduce the world population scheme of the elite: burn the sperm and reduce the fertility. Perhaps you are averse to being fertile. So why the enticement to show off your junk to others?
19. Brain washed....
d ,   centre   (05.24.13)
look...you bear 10 kids indoctrinate them with a fanatical way of life, its too late, they are programmed. Those 10 each have 10 more...each one growing up to understand but one way of life. Its useless, no way out of this. I feel so sorry for these poor helpless people. I always will, no need to say dont, You do not understand the depths of your own prison cell.
20. "gentile practice."
Zev ,   Israel   (05.24.13)
Last I looked the gentiles also wear baggy pants.
21. #17: Absolutely correct. Nearly every day, haredi rabbis
Runner1983 ,   USA   (05.24.13)
try to outdo each other by making fatwa-like statements more ridiculous than previous statements made by some other rabbi, on the minutia of daily life. This is not what Jidaism is about, which is how one treats his or her fellow man. They are not practicing Judaism, but Haredism. Many haredi followers actually listen to these rabbis, rather than use the common sense and critical judgment they were born with. I feel very sorry for children born into this cult. They will never see the light of day, and realize their potential.
22. Doubtful-
Zoober Kattan ,   NY NY   (05.24.13)
Most Haredim I met do not wear "tight pants". As far as Ashkenazim go....Unless they stuffed a sock, cucumber, or Salami in their pants...no one would notice! Furthermore, any competent Rabbi will tell you that the Yetzer Harah of women is not usually visually controlled. A woman can see a naked man and will say "oh, that's nice" and moves on with her day without a second thought. A man sees an attractive woman and he wants to jump on her. It's just the way Hashem designed us..........deal with it!
23. to #21
Naftali ,   Seattle,WA   (05.25.13)
did you know that there were more religious Jews that perished in the holocaust then non religious Jews because they took it at their own will to understood the dangers and were able figure out a plan of resistance either to fight back or get out and head for safety?
24. Seduce only women?
Raphael ,   Netanya   (05.25.13)
Bermudas showing hairy legs may also arouse the desire of homosexual hareidim.
25. Really - like I'm going to look down - LOL
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (05.25.13)
26. Temptations,haredi men should shave off
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (05.25.13)
their beards,to prevent pious women from impure thoughts, a beard is a symbol of masculinity,a man with a beard in Meah shearim,is like a woman in a bikini.
27. a breath of fresh air
settherecordstraight   (05.25.13)
tis about time we hear about men's modesty issues. they do have plenty of them. and tight pants is def. one of them. kol ha kavod toyou, rav kayiefsky!
28. 'Gentile practice' Chukas haGoy
Joseph ,   London UK   (05.26.13)
The Torah prohibition is usually understood to mean Jews must keep a distance from non-Jewish religious practices, e.g. graven images. It would only apply to clothes if the garments had a specifically religious significance. On the other hand 'modesty' [tzenius or concealment] refers to an outlook and not just to specific parts of the body. If a person dresses in a manner likely to lead to immoral thoughts, then it becomes immodest even if it covers one's body.
29. Blood circulation
Akiva ,   NYC   (05.26.13)
If men wear too tight underpants, pants or trousers it may affect circulation of blood to the groin and damage the Haredi birth rate. Look at Beliebers to see the latest in crotch fashion and full blood flow to privay parts!
30. Shows they've been watching too much tv in secret. Rubbish!!
