If Haaretz is correct then the ministry of finance has halted construction of the planned detention centre in the Negev which was designed to hold thousands of these people until they could be deported. . According to an article in Haaretz last week the finance ministry feels there is no need for the place and so we could save 300 million shekels and cancel the project even though 50 million shekels has already been invested in it. If this is part of Lpids budget then the residents of Tel Aviv have good reason to protest.

Those who advocate a detention facility don't realize that this will help keep present and future infiltrators IN Israel, because there is no policy on what to do with these people after they are released. Only viable solutions are - to protect the border so there are no more infiltrators coming in, no matter how many wars and famines afflict Africa in the future. Once they reach Egypt, they must stay there. - Hand over genuine refugees to UNHCR to be cared for at UN refugee camps IN AFRICA. - Assist the rest to go back home or to Egypt.. But before any of this is done, Israelis need to mobilize and repeatedly demonstrate until the government gets the message.

The problem in Tel Aviv is that one ethnic group is causing a majority of the problems. Why should Israel put up with that? Israel doesn't owe these illegals anything. They should respectfully deport them. These people come from African countries run by African people. If they were doing their job people wouldn't be leaving for non African countries. Don't they care enough to try and improve their own countries?

These so called "infiltrators" are people who fled their own countries because their lives where in danger and to send them back to their home countries would mean certain death, and most likely torture, for many. Israel signed the 1951 refugee convention, meaning that Israel is obligated to provide a safe haven for such people but unfortunately, the government is ignoring their responsibility to both these individuals as well as their own citizens. The government has made it illegal for them to work, thereby preventing refugees from providing food and shelter for themselves. The current situation is a result of this dire situation. The government solution should not be to round them all up and shove them into prison. The government needs to recognize their presence in the country until it is safe for them to return to their own. Until then, the government should allow them the opportunity to be self-sustainable. Even something as simple as not fining business who provide refugees with work.
