When Assad goes there is a real chance the country will descend into Iraq style sectarian violence. Recovery will take decades so with any luck they will start thinking about rebuilding their country rather than destroying Israel. Poor old Russia are going to loose their only naval base outside the old Soviet satellite states and that means their influence in the region will decrease. This misery couldn't have happened to two nicer countries. Long term the big winner will be America when the American industrial giants buy up anything of any real value in Syria and exploit it. Someone pointed out that the 6.6 million displaced people in Syria are 10 times more than displaced Arabs during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war (they call Nakba). Someone asked whether these 6.6 million people, their children, grandchildren and great grand children will be paid to stay in refugee camps, receiving massive international aid for at least the next 65 years, or will a different solution be found.
