1. One of the more pressing 'needs'
Tim ,   Brighton   (05.13.13)
Is an 'English University of Israel' - preferably in Beersheba! Time and again I hear from undergraduates, graduates, researchers and post research academics..in the sciences and technologies...BOTH JEWISH and NON JEWISH if only I could get my degree or do my research in an English University in Israel especially in the light of the distressing anti Israel and anti Jewish atmosphere at some universities As one UK academic said to me recently when pressed..'there is no way of telling these days in the UK and no guarantee that a Jewish Student might be 'undermarked and penalised' in an exam by a Pro Palestinian Academic' Studying in Israel would be more welcoming, less intimidating, there wouldnt be the constant need to 'hide' ones Jewish identity, the food would be kosher (sort of), the weather amazing quite apart from a vibrant start up environment to commercialise great ideas! Surely there are Philanthropists in the US, Canada, Australia, UK who would be only too pleased to put their names to such an amazing project - excellence in higher education? A university that would welcome students and academics of all religions and cultures whose primary language would be English What a lasting legacy that would be
2. lipman should start looking for a new party
zionist forever   (05.13.13)
If he doesn't have a very senior spot on the Yehs Atid list like top 5 then next election he may well not be an MK anymore and he will have given up his American citizenship for nothing. Lapid is going to have to pull off something very special ( not haredi bashing ) if he wants to boost his popularity to an extent he can continue to get a large number of seats next election. Lapid is discovering now that you can't be a minister and rely on haredi bashing forever and sometimes you have to make unpopular choices which is going to hurt you in the popularity contests.
3. US citizens CANNOT renounce citizenship
mea   (05.13.13)
To be clear, the US government does not allow US citizens to renounce their citizenship except when they become citizens of a nation hostile to America. It may be possible for someone serving in a foreign government to do this, but I doubt it.
4. A Jew is not an "Anglo"
David N. ,   Haifa, ISRAEL   (05.13.13)
I was born in the US, but I am an Israeli, non-hyphenated, and I I despise the use of the word "Anglo." Even in Britain, only the ethnic English are Anglo-Saxon. Scots and Welsh and Irish are not. Yet a person of middle eastern origin, a Jew, is called an Anglo because he comes from an English-speaking country? I do not look to America, or long for America, or idealize America, or IDOLIZE America. My loyalty and my identity is with Am Israel. Why look back to Egypt? We're free now! Anglo indeed. I want MKs that worry about all Israelis, from anywhere, Sabra or gola born, equally according to need.
5. Zionist forever
JGad ,   Israel   (05.13.13)
Or....if the finance minister do not fix the israeli economy maybe no political party will be able to run in next elections for PM,

You do not know what you are talking about. An American can knowingly and voluntarily renounce their citizenship. However, the courts have made so many allowances that, even after having done so, it is VERY easy to get it back.

I imagine giving up US citizenship is probably more of a formality like giving up his American passport but if he ended his political career in Israel he could probably request the US give him back his citizenship and he would get it. Thats probably the case with alot of the European countries as well.

great- see you soon
9. Renouncing citizenship
Josh ,   ZY, Israel   (05.14.13)
Just google "renouncing US citizenship" - it is possible to do and more and more people do it mostly to get out of onerous tax reporting and filing requirements for overseas US citizens.
10. why aren't these people learning Hebrew?
(05.14.13)
11. @3 u r wrong go look it up on line @USA state department
(05.14.13)
on line then go look up the Israeli laws related to running for the Knesset. then go look up the lsraeli and American laws related to diplomatic service in either country. then after doing all that retrack your stupid statement!
12. # 3..That's not true!!!!!...
Edithann ,   USA   (05.14.13)
You can renounce your citizenship anytime you want... I can't image you saying such a thing..where the hell did you get that BS from? I only hope he gave up his Passport along with his Citizenship.. .If you want to know more about the US..I suggest you read up.. There are already many English-language programs for foreign students at Israeli universities and at the IDC.
14. haredi
tzviah ,   jerusalem   (05.14.13)
I wonder what the Chofetz Chaim would say about him. Instead of getting teary-eyed when he renounced his American citizinship, maybe he should get teary-eyed when he bashes the charedim. I hope he feels better now that he got all his frustration off his chest in public, and now he can do some serious thinking/
15. LMAO @1 you can study in English at all Israeli Universities
Israel ,   Israel   (05.14.13)
therefore there is no need to have an English University of Israel especially since all of the enlightened British Academics are busy boycotting us!
16. English University
Avi W ,   Netanya   (05.14.13)
Did you ever hear of IDC its on par with any University in Israel or anywhere else for that matter.
17. One day.
Spengler ,   US   (05.14.13)
There will come a day when in America a politician will have to say he is in tune with the needs of the english speakers of the country......

Lipmans reported reaction on renouncing his US citiizenship is a stark reminder of our sick Galus mentality.
19. Yeah, yeah, #4
Cameron ,   USA   (05.14.13)
We all know you've made a distinct point of stashing that US passport of yours in a very safe & secure spot as a comforting fallback for financial & safety reasons. You'll ALWAYS keep close to you.
20. @10
AY ,   Detroit   (05.14.13)
It's not about learning Hebrew. I bet these Anglos just realized that sometimes you need to have someone like you to take you seriously. You know, just like many Russian olim did. Before they had their own party (I'm talking about late 90's), no politician was giving them the time of day. And so it is with the Anglos.
21. WRONG Cameron no US Passport
David N. ,   Haifa, ISRAEL   (05.15.13)
Cameron, I have NO US passport and do not travel anywhere except on my Israel passport. I haven't been to America in 15 years, and only then for a dying sibling. Inside the US, US law prevails. It does not inform my identity or make claims on me otherwise. What American says I am is not what I am. Torah and Israeli law applies to me. I am not anti-American, but I am not interested in dividing my loyalty. So, no American passport for me, none in any back drawer, and why you imagine you know me well enough to say such things is beyond me.
