Two possibilities . First the Russians lost a submarine in the area and there is a massive search operation going on. Two, they are preparing for a catastrophic retreat of all their "civilians" working in Syria. It is impossible that Syria represent a profitable financial adventure for Putin & Associates.

Russian Navy is only good at one thing: sinking their own vessels to block the ports and deny their use to the enemy. When it comes to the more conventional method of securing the ports by defeating the enemy in a naval battle, the last time Russia had any amount of success was is the late 1700s. The foreign mercenaries did most of the operational planning and supervised the execution. Russian Navy has always been the laughing stock of the other branches of service. Throughout WWII (which is arguably the one that matters the most to the Russians) the Navy was practically useless. The sailors were taken off the ships, given the M91/30 bolt-action rifle and sent into the meat grinder with the rest of the infantry. Their naval training did not do them any good, with the only exception being the navy gunners manning artillery on land. Their ships are old, built at least 30 years ago, and in a sad state of disrepair to boot. Not that long ago, the pride of the Russian Navy, namely aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" lost all power and nearly ran aground due to loss of control. Their posturing in Syria is for the most part posturing. They are dropping a turd that no one is going to touch, because of the stink that will ensue. Russian navy is not a threat to anybody other than the russian sailors themselves.

Russia will get theirs in the "Battle Of Ezekial" when Russia attempts to invade from the north. I have no idea when that will be but it will happen.

At least 12 ships have been deployed off Syria, and will also visit Cyprus. They include elements of both the Pacific Fleet and the Baltic Sea Fleet. The Pacific Fleet sailed up the Suez on the 15th May, and include the Udaloy class destroyer 'Admiral Panteleyev', the Ropucha class heavy landing ships Peresvet & Admiral Nevelskiy, the tanker Pechenga and the tug Fotiy Krylov. Other ships of the Baltic Fleet have docked in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, the Ropucha landing ships Kaliningrad, Aleksandr Shabalin & Azov. Once they have re-supplied they will move down into the Mediterranean.

Lets all just hope that Russia is just positioning for the peace conference that's coming up, strengthening it's bargaining position and that the U.S. and Russia ratchet this thing down . He looks at this as a time when Russia was feared and respected across the world. He wants to return to that time, when Russia was a Superpower, not just a gas exporting regional power. To this end he opposes the West at the US, for no greater reason then to deny them what they want - hence the support for Serbia, for Iran and Syria, the UN votes against Israel and demands that the US not build missile defence. Putin will not abandon Assad, and I predict that he will use Russian navy and air defences to allow Assad to carve out an Allawite Rump State, securing the ports and West coast. Posters here are correct, Russian Tech is not as good as US/Israel, which is second to none, but Russia has several thousand nukes and no nation has directly fought and defeated the Russian military (save Chechen & Afghan Insurgents, and those sort of wars have different wars). Russia has slowly been asserting it's self since the end of the Cold War (Intervention in Kosovo, Georgia War) and now Putin may want to demonstrate Russian power by challenging the West over the fate of Syria.

Country innocent people have been and are killed by those who have power and those want power. Russia should annex Syria.
