1. ``Destroying the Torah world``
Dave ,   Montreal, Canada   (05.23.13)
How on Earth does giving a few years of service to your country going to destroy the Haredim?? Such foolish sentiment. Sheltering people just leaves them in ignorance. If exposure to the world is such a danger, then these Yeshiva students aren't being taught very strong values.
2. If they dont like please feel free to leave the country
Haim ,   TA   (05.23.13)
Although i wonder what other country would allow these people to live off social secuirty and never work a day in their lives all paid for by the tax payers exspence.
3. Litzman is right.
(05.23.13)
Talking about recruiting charedim is silly and it will never come to pass anyhow.
4. Peri is a fool if he expects the Cantonist Law to pass
(05.23.13)
5. haredi mk's scared they are losing their flock, robots will
avg joe ,   Israel   (05.23.13)
get deprogrammed. Thats the only thing they are scared of. All the haredim in the army will come out just as religious but they might question a few things they never questioned before and might even think for themselves-as the Torah and HKBH always intended.
6. IT IS THE HAREDI WHO ARE OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALTY
stude ham   (05.23.13)
in fact they are parasitic allowing others to fight and be killed so that they can flip the pages of their legal texts in peace. if the haredi want continued existence in the lands of Israel then they had better be prepared to defend the land of Israel. so far the haredim are a worse enemy to Israel than the others who are actively pursuing such dreams as the destruction of Israel.
7. funny that the article talks about a
Mira ,   Vienna   (05.23.13)
"Lapid-Bennet-Government" and leaves out Likud Beteinu at all! Says a lot about the kind of perception of Israeli politics!
8. Peri "Law"
Alejandro ,   B. Aires Argentina   (05.23.13)
Why not to force secular youngsters to study Torah? isn't it another way to "integrate" secular and religious world? Can anybody imagine a telavivian in a yeshivah?
9. The Rabbis are shrinking!!!!!
Mark ,   Cleveland USA   (05.23.13)
With every Haredi student that joins the army, the power and influence of the radical Haredi Rabbis will shrink. They will fight it tooth and nail, but we will all be better off if they lose. In the future, Torah study will be combined with good deeds and service to country. Israel with be stronger, and fewer welfare checks will need to be sent out. Kol Hakavod Israeli Government!
10. Haredim
Dovid ,   Haifa Israel   (05.23.13)
are not to blame for all problems. let them do sherut leumi. 3 years work in school, hospital or something. lapid and his north tel aviv draft dodging torah hating "jews" are worse.
11. #1 Destroying Torah
(05.23.13)
destroys the world, PERIOD and there's no better protection for Israel than Torah. If all Jews living in Israel would learn Torah and follow Torah laws, Israel can literally abolish the army because nobody in the world will fight the, but for this we'll have to wait for Moshiah since the secular are not ready for that.
12. Torah lasted 3000+ yrs w/o these bottom-feeding illiterates
Restorer ,   Israel   (05.23.13)
Suddenly, how will the Creator manage without this medieval European authorities who think they outrank Hashem and that without them Torah will self-destruct? Sanctimonious arrogance is beyond words.
13. #11-- who-ever you are
arne ,   chicago usa   (05.23.13)
question--did torah save the jews in europe or for that matter did it ever save us from harm at anytime? wake up schmuckeroo--the jews will have to fight to servive, not pray.
14. suicidal israeli stupidity
david ,   new york   (05.23.13)
the only thing saving israel are the haredim - and i'm not talking spiritually, i'm talking purely physically: 1. the arab population is growing, and without the large growth of haredim israel will be controlled by the arabs and left wing (they dont need 51% for this, even 25% will be enough and they already have 20%). haredi growth will overtake the arabs(if they arent destroyed by lapid and the leftists) 2. only the haredim are resolute in their hatred of our enemies. i went to a recent bar mitvah and the haredi rabbi referred to the palestinians as "yemach shemam". try and find that even amoung the national religious. the main weakness israel has is not military, but a lack of resolve in calling our enemies for what they are and this gives foreign powers the ability to divide and conquer. lapid is getting a lot of mileage on the "hate haredim" campaign. israels (much as i love them) are quite stupid and are perfectly willing to destroy their country for stupid reasons. ever heard of the gaza disengagement? werent settlers the cause of all of isreal's problems? (remember that campaign of hatred in 2005?)
15. Equality...draft all at 18, no exceptions for Jews or Arabs
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (05.23.13)
...anything less is either special treatment for select Jews, or racism against Arabs.
16. services are part of hashems beracha .
alan ash ,   nyc ny   (05.23.13)
services are part of hashems beracha . everything is done . in kolel forever is dead
17. HAREDI
PA ,   Canada   (05.23.13)
It about time that they contribute !!!! It's not what your country can do for you its what you can do for your country.
18. #14 david
arne ,   chicago usa   (05.23.13)
read my comment #13 and please tell me where I went wrong arne
19. 11 Nothing is destroying Tora more effectively than Haredim!
Cyberbrain ,   Israel   (05.23.13)
20. Test for the National-Religious
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (05.23.13)
Will they favor National (i.e. Zionist) or Religious? I hope they will come to support their co-religionists, first. I cannot imagine how horrible it will be if they decide to join the anti-Haredi camp, abandoning their brothers in faith and practice. The sad divides we have today among our people would become even more seriously exasperated and infinitely more difficult to heal.
21.  re #14. suicidal israeli stupidity
JAS ,   London   (05.23.13)
Regarding your first point. Who is going to support this growing populaion of Haredim who have no skills or means to support themselves? The more Haredim there are the harder the Chiloni population has to work to pay for them. The system will evenutally crash and the enemy will win as you will all starve to death with not enough chiloni people to pay for you to study. Can't you see it is not sustainable?
22. To 13
Sam ,   Belgium   (05.23.13)
Ur a real old time apekores !!!!
23. Best thing for Haredim
Ed ,   USA   (05.23.13)
Whatever the intention of the drafters of this law, its result will be entirely beneficial for haredim. Nothing will make people appreciate learning so much as not being able to do it. Those who stick with the community as a means of avoiding service--the weak links--will be gone. Secular Israelis will have an opportunity to meet haredim, and some will choose to become more observant and become haredim themselves. It's time to end the isolation of haredim, and no one will benefit more than the haredim. One more point: the fear among haredim that young haredim exposed to the secular world will leave in droves undermines the devotion to learning and the appreciation of its power that should be central to a torah way of life.
24. #22 what the hell
arne ,   chicago usa   (05.23.13)
does that mean--I don't speak you language
25. Haredim are not Jews, their threats are rubbish.
Michael ,   California, USA   (05.23.13)
But the worst is yet to come, as they did it to themselves in Poland before wwII: they will hurt themselves to get medical exemptions. They will maim themselves. maim (mm) tr.v. maimed, maimĀ·ing, maims 1. To injure, disable, or disfigure, usually by depriving of the use of a limb or other part of the body. See Synonyms at batter1. 2. To make imperfect or defective; impair. [Middle English maimen, from Old French mahaignier; see mayhem.] maimer n.
26. Peri
Eli ,   Tel-Aviv, Israel   (05.23.13)
I thought this guy was smart, now I know he as dumb as an Ox. Do our MKs know anything about equality and real democracy. EVERYBODY must report for duty at the age of 18, and serve for the same time.If yiu dont like it get out of the country and out of our lives. Enough already with these stupid impotent mickey mouse plans.
27. Peri Plan
Mordechai ,   Beit Shemesh   (05.23.13)
if there is not a general draft of all immediately at the age of 18 Yesh Atid is finished. No grace period no 3 year free pass, everyone including all Arab citizens. those who do not want to serve do one and a half time a soldier does in civil national service. new roads need building especially in the Arab sector, schools hospitals etc. during the second world war thousands were sent to work in the coal mines in Britain nothing wrong in the same being applied her, just that we don't have any coal mines! this way they pay off the 40 Billion Sheqal debt the settlers/settlements and Haridim have stolen from us and the taxes the Arab Israelis have not paid !
28. privileged class?
Wade ,   NYC USA   (05.23.13)
Do the chareidim deserve to be a privileged class when it comes to army service? The future teachers and engineers and businessmen put their lives on hold to serve in the IDF. Doctors and dentists serve right after medical school. It's perfectly in line with Torah for these young men to be enlisted, especially if in hesder which combines service with Torah learning. Nothing will be destroyed if they take 2 years off from sitting on the benches- their influence could even be positive.
29. #13 What percentage in Europe were learning torah smart ass?
AB ,   TheRock   (05.23.13)
And if we are still around it is only thanks to the righteous amongst us - even the goyim recognize the miracles we experience time and again and it is not thanks to ppl who think like you. Ppl in these talkbacks talk about the ignorance of haredim well I have yet to see such ignorance of one's own religion!
30. Absurdity
mike ,   Lawrence NY   (05.23.13)
This morning in shul an American Haredi guy told his Haredi rabbi that his son-in-law had just graduated from Fordham law school and at graduation had worn a cap and gown with a cross on it. There were some eyebrows raised but that was it. If this same guy and his son-in-law lived in Israel neither of them would ever have seen the inside of a secular let alone Jesuit catholic school and in fact neither of them would have done anything their whole lives except hang around yeshivos. Is learning torah only a value in Israel (yes, I know the ramban's view)? Isn't it clear from Jewish experience in every country they've ever been in that talmud torah doesn't preclude working, studying for a profession and even serving in the army (especially one that is kosher and shomer shabas)? This hypocrisy must end sometime and maybe now is the time.
