1. These constant protests are way out of control..
Malone ,   Hfx   (05.26.13)
..not only in Israel, but world wide, usually ending up in violence..in some places, the protesters don't even know what they're protesting...professional protesters, travelling around causing trouble...the police should forget about being politically correct and start swinging the baton at the head instead of the legs..somethings gotta give some where..
2. Leave Stanley Fischer alone
SNS   (05.26.13)
For years Stanley Fischer has faithfully stood between Israel and economic ruin as has happened in so many European countries. If it weren't for his sound monetary decisions many more people would be unemployed and living in poverty.
3. Fischer
njdoc ,   usa   (05.26.13)
The last thing Israel needs is to create petrogarchs. Look at the Russian tycoons, they don't even live in Russia. The entire oil/gas reserves of Israel should be nationalized, and any investments made by private citizens returned to them. This is a national security issue, in my opinion.
4. arrest and charge and jail. this crossed the line.
ralph   (05.26.13)
These are takers not makers. They know nothing and are only parasites.
5. Rabble of Flat Earthers
Eran   (05.26.13)
Brilliant. Lets assault Fischer and his wife to show we don't believe he understands economics. Eco-trash
6. I agree with the protests
Dror ,   Emeq Yizrael, Israel   (05.26.13)
The gas fields should be nationalized. Taxes and energy prices should be reduced for the middle class. Government should fear the people, Fisher should fear the people, Tshuva should fear the people. Get the g-ddamn Africans out of hear. Start listening to the will of the people. Good, they should be afraid. When the masses wake up we are legion. Do not forget we are the ARMY, we are the MILITARY of this country, this will not be a police state. The tycoons will be hung from the highest trees in the country if we do not get what we want. THIS IS OUR COUNTRY NOT THEIRS TO OWN AND CONTROL.
7. What! they r attacking the wrong person!
(05.26.13)
Fisher has been amazing and assisted Israel a great deal.
8. How did they know where Mr. Fisher was?
(05.26.13)
who gave them this information? how did they arrive so quickly on a Saturday night from Ramat Gan to Tel Aviv? There is a great deal more to this story.
9. The not-so-genius Lapid shall forever go down in History as
tom ,   tel aviv   (05.26.13)
the guy that coined the idiotic, but oh so popular with the Mob phrase "Where is the money"? I guess that's something to....
10. Fisher
Miron ,   Israel   (05.26.13)
He is not guilty for the gas resources "sale" to the tycoons. But he kept on the inflation and the high cost of living in Israel. The middle class who do not have high Government salaries is paying the bill for this policy.
11. #2 we live in poverty anyway even when working
(05.26.13)
12. they dont want big companies getting rich from gas exports
zionist forever   (05.26.13)
The real problem this lot have with exporting gas is the fact that companies will get rich selling what they see as the peoples gas. Plenty of gas is being limited for domestic use but at the same time what right do we have t o refuse to let these companies export some of the gas. The taxpayer hasn't invested a single shekel in drilling for this gas its all been done by private companies and had it not been for them the people wouldn't have their precious gas. A condition has always been the government allow a percentage of the gas to be exported so unless the public want to have the budget cut some more so we can afford to drill the gas rather than private companies then they have to accept some of it will be exported and from those exports the government will get royalties.

The people have a right to protest peacefully in a democracy.

If we start nationalising things there won't be anything to nationalise. Foreign investment will go because big business will no longer feel confident Israel is a safe bet. If we want to nationalise the gas fields then we need to first compensate the companies that have contracts and invested millions drilling for the stuff. If it hadn't been for them nobody would get any gas. After we have done that the government would have to increase taxes so they can afford to spend millions of dollars every week to keep drilling for gas. Gas also doesn't come up in 1 go so we can't make billions overnight it provides a slow and steady income through royalty payments if we do it ourselves the money will go in the front door & out the back to fund the drilling. What the hell is this hatred with the rich that has appeared in this country? The rich are not responsible for peoples problems they are people who got lucky, when taxes and prices go up you think its because of the rich? The rich have been turned into scapegoats and looking for scapegoats might make us all feel better about ourselves because we now have a bad guy to focus our problems it solves nothing. We will alienate ourselves economically and politically ( even from the US ) and Israel will become some third world backward country nobody wants anything to do with and our best & brightest will emigrate because they don't want to waste their skills in Isolated third world Israel.

Stanley Fisher is responsible for the inflation rate but inflation is a balancing act and it because he has balanced the inflation RESPONSIBLY Israel is still growing at a slow rate not selling off the family silver as they are in Greece. You want to go back to the days when a pack of cigarettes cost 10,000 shekel, get inflation wrong that happens. Its the evil tycoons who have paid to get the gas out the ground and we get royalties from their profits made from gas sold to us & abroad. With the evil tycoons out the picture the state has to pay millions each week to bring the stuff and rather than royalties for zero investment, to cover drilling cost we won't earn a single penny from it. HIgh living cost are not his fault its the cost of the private businesses. If the privately owned supermarket decide to sell cottage cheese for 10 shekel rather than 5 shekel to make they are responsible not Fisher & nobody can stop them doing so. If the housing market as got out of control thats not Fishers fault its because the housing market sets its own rate through the free market and as long as people are willing to pay crazy prices they will stay crazy. You want government to be responsible for property prices? Get real and look at the big picture.

Your points are valid and I can accept the rationale. The only problem is that the masses are ready to revolt. You need to reduce taxes on the middle class ASAP. Israel Electric company's monopoly must be dismantled into several private companies that can compete with one another. If this is not done you will have a serious problem with the masses demanding nationalization of the gas fields. THE CULPRIT IS THE MONOPOLY called Israel elctric company. Our Yahoo almost had the balls to move in on their monopoly, but he got shot down. Maybe a few dead electric company execs. will drive the point home. Maybe?

I agree with you 100% Israel Electric must be dismantled and privatised and I think Bibi does want to because he is a big fan of privatisation ( he privatised Bezeq and IMI ) He does though have to fight the anti privatisation leftists and the all powerful Histadrut who need to have their power reduced the way Margret Thatcher did to the British unions who were holding the country to ransom, in the 70s. I remember with the social protests I found Daphne Leef hilarious at times because she was demanding Bibi break monopolies but she was also dead set against privatisation and there are lots of people who think like she does just want it both ways.
18. Who owns the gas?
Ephraim ,   Jerusalem   (05.26.13)
It is not clear from this article. Is the gas owned by the State or these private companies? With the insanely high price of energy in Israel. if the State owns the gas, these protesters are correct.
19. Ralph and others living well
Ephraim ,   Jerusalem   (05.26.13)
Every day I read the words parasites, takers, leeches. I am happy for Ralph and his ilk that have good lives, but most people in Israel suffer just to survive each month. People like this are blind to the problems of others. Many people work very hard and still can't make ends meet. I especially love when people attack the Haredim (I am not Haredi). These are the same people who wouldn't donate a shekel for someone in need. If I was starving, I would ask for help from people who really care and help others the most, which are the religious. Get off your high horse and try to understand that MOST people are not as blessed as you and suffer every day. This gas SHOULD belong to the State and be used for energy at home and to bring down the deficit, not just to make a few people rich. I read once that 18 families in Israel control one-third of the money in the country. If that is true, that is beyond sick. Bottom line, stop judging others unless you are willing to stand up and help people really in need.

SNS you may not have noticed but the sound policies of Stanley Fischer have caused serious poverty in Israel. Israel has the highest percentage of people living in poverty of any western country. This makes us better off than the Europeans? When are you all going to realise that this country is in a real financial mess. Lets hope that Lapid can sort it all out.
