tom ,   tel aviv   (05.28.13)
2. Important Step - Its a WIN WIN situation
Tim ,   Brighton   (05.28.13)
Its perfectly possible to reconcile Torah and Mainstream Education and a Haredi family life I know many committed Haredim who are Torah Scholars as well as the brightest Medical Scientists and IT Engineers Its their very financial security that enables them to sustain their Torah Learning AND benefit Yeshivas through their support
3. Haredi schools who don't learn core subjects
Moshe ,   Israel   (05.28.13)
have no violence while secular schools with all their core subjects have violence, murder and rape and whatnot.
4. Mazal tov..!
Cohen,Israel   (05.28.13)
I hope it won't be the only one, but doesn't seem it will become a general phenomena in their education...
5. You can't expect haredi schools
Moshe ,   Israel   (05.28.13)
to teach zionist history, aka apikorsus. Regarding math, haredim because they learn Gemara they're much better at that than secular.
6. ??
Aviva ,   your face   (05.28.13)
"The new institution will offer Bible, history, English and math lessons, alongside Torah studies. " - um, what do you think Torah studies are, if not Bible studies?
7. # 3. Moshe Seriously!
Habib Seliman ,   New York, USA   (05.28.13)
Moshe, seriously! The only violence they practice is against the Police and Slodiers in the streets of Jerusalem, but thats OK, right! Let's talk about drugs, or maybe they don't do that either? How many Yeshivas specialize in helping the addicted in the ultra orthodox community ? We can say B'H for that. Rape, no it doesn't happen amongst them, right? The safe houses set up for women that suffer from abuse in the ultra orthodox communities, B'H they exist. Being Gay? No, there are non Gay haredim - just like achmadinjed said about Iran. Moshe, teaching and educating children and young adults about the world around them and how to behave and respect others only enhances their abilities and even fortifies and strengthens our belief system in Hashem and the Torah. It is a great step forward.
8. 3&5 So they make a lot of $ as Dean of Math @ universities?
Ima Laughin ,   Israel   (05.28.13)
9. Why is this news?. No, let me rephrase it...
Carlos King   (05.28.13)
Why is teaching Israeli kids in this, a first World Country ,news?. Why do we have to announce to the World "We have decided to finally teach knowledge to our future Jewish generations"?. A backwards, extremist dominated third World country finally coming into the 21st Century?. G*d be praised. But in Judea?.
10. 7 Crimes in the Haredi world...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.28.13)
is so seldom, that if it happens,it gets headlines.
11. This is good news.
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (05.28.13)
Only hope that others follow their example.
12. it aint the first
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (05.29.13)
there are others but most people call them talmud Torahs instead of cheders
13. Here's what'll happen
Scarborough1414 ,   Scarborough, ON   (05.29.13)
The school will open. Children will learn core subjects. The ultra-conservative Hareidi press will denounce the school as "trayf". Enrollment will slow down. The secular press will say Hareidim don't want progress, only to suck at the public teat (or words to that effect). Enrollment will slowly pick up. Hareidi fanatics will vandalize the school and accuse the staff of all kinds of things, probably falsely. The school will close. Hareidi fanatics will declare victory. The secular press will smirk. End of story. This will take years, but I'm probably right. Look at TB'er Moshe; his kind won't accept this kind of school, it's a threat to his narrow-minded mindset. And some say that seculars have no tolerance!
14. London
Joseph ,   London UK   (05.29.13)
Here in London where the core curriculum is required until age 16 our strictly Orthodox boys' schools manage to cover both Kodesh and Core subjects -- whether Hasmonean, Menorah, Pardes, Elyon, Yesodey Hatorah, or others. Our Haredi girls' schools go well beyond the core curriculum up til 16 or 18, offering a wide range of national examinations -- Hasmonean, Beth Jacob, Tifereth, Yesodey Hatorah, Menorah and others. Bezalel Cohen should visit Golders Green and Stamford Hill.
15. Science should also be included (end)
Jay ,   Israel   (05.29.13)
16. Ora, it happens.
R ,   Israel   (05.29.13)
It is the same as on the kibbutzim: they try to deal with it within the community so just like some of the kibbutz members, you may not be aware of it in your community, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. Your press may not report it, but it happens. You may not have experienced it personally, but it happens.
17. # 10 Ora
Habib Seliman ,   New York, USA   (05.29.13)
Why don't you come and participate in the visits we do around the New York and New Jersey state prisons and see how 'seldom' is not as seldom as you think. You can have multiple minyans from every sect from from Satmar to Belz.
18. 16&17 Ora thinks if she puts enough lipstick & mascara on it
Israeili Jew ,   Israel   (05.29.13)
she can hide all the blemishes. It only exposes her own blemishes.
19. 16 17 18 Of course it happens in..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.29.13)
Haredi society. But seldom. Moreover many prisoners got religious overnight to get Kosher food. 17 mentioned a Minyan. What is a minyan in the total population of a prison?
20. Why aren't there any Messianic Yeshivas?
matthias ,   haifa   (05.30.13)
21. See (19)? More lipstick, no contact with reality
Israeili Jew ,   Israel   (05.30.13)
22. Ora #19
R ,   Israel   (05.30.13)
I understand the need to think that it happens "seldom" but you are misleading yourself. It's just a different cultural approach to the handling of it. Only in recent years are we aware of the extent of things such as rape and incest, for example, in secular society because in the past it was rarely reported, due to the stigma, how the police handled it, etc. Now there is more awareness. It's sad to know how much it exists (in all societies) but at least this knowledge allows parents to precaution their children and to support them if G-d forbid it happens to them. Best to take off the blinders.
23. 22 R.Israel, I am very against ...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.30.13)
hiding crimes for whatever reason. They must without hesitation be dealt with. But don't you think that in the secular world crimes far exceed in % that of Haredim?
24. 21 4get about lipstick,and u 'll be OK.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.30.13)
25. 24-I'm quite ok without your silly & sanctimonious approval
Israeili Jew ,   Israel   (05.30.13)
No one needs it. You're arrogant.
26. 25 You insult me ,and then you are...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.30.13)
offended because i react? Where did you see any approval, sanctimonious or not? I sincerely hope i am not arrogant. Though if i sounded like that,i am very sorry.
27. 23 crime is not the subject
robert ,   antwerp belgium   (05.30.13)
but education and preparation to professional integration is. It's not a contest on wether there is more crime among hilonim or haredim. It's the responsibility of the government to plan for the future through professional education. In the competitive economic environment of today it would be irresponsible for any government to let a substantial part of the youth get to the adult age without the necessary skills to have an independant living.
28. 27 Secular Jews can not indoctrinate
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.30.13)
Haredim, as long as their culture is not an example to follow. So,yes, crime is the subject.
29. 28 it's not indoctrination
robert ,   antwerp belgium   (05.30.13)
it's about teaching a profession. Normally it's a mitzva for the father (parents) to teach a profession to his children. if the current "indoctrination" among haredim is that it is better to live out of government's handouts and that when the government tries to bring sense to the parentsyou call it indoctrination , than yes, it's healthy indoctrination
30. 29 IMPOSING your view on others ?
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.30.13)
Nor Secular nor Orthodox Jews are ready to accept that. Violence rapes ,drug and drinking problems in secular schools are not so very attractive to Haredi parents. First improve Secular education and then you can give lessons to the Haredim.
