1. Better he should spend some time working out
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (05.31.13)
"Meanwhile, Y. is spending the weeks before enlistment by pouring over holy books." All his aspirations won't mean much if he isn't physically fit to survive the rigors he'll face in training.
2. Torah im Derech Eretz
Joseph ,   London UK   (05.31.13)
In the 19th Century the Hirschian Torah im Derech Eretz Rabbonim tried to set up schools in Eretz Israel, but the Chochmai Yerushalayim objected, mainly because they lacked Haredi teachers for the 'core curriculum'. A general studies curriculum taught within a Torah framework is very much needed today in Eretz HaKodesh. Torah values should be part of civil discourse.
3. God Bless !!!.

4. nice story but ...
Reuven ,   netanya   (05.31.13)
How in the name of ... science let's say, is he going to cope with the math involved?
5. Great guy: 1) Serve the country, 2) Keep religion private.
Michael ,   California, USA   (05.31.13)
Ken iirbu kamohu and similarly to his family. Obviously, serving the country will always be in the public eye. But his religion will be a private matter, the support of his spirit in whichever way he will find it useful. The best of luck to this fellow with both, in serving and studying.
6. The real trailblazer is the Ultra-Orthodox Female Combat ...
W. Turner ,   Israel   (05.31.13)
Navigator. She's already completed the course. This boy if he makes it will be following in her footsteps!
7. Haredi Pilot?
Joshua ,   USA   (05.31.13)
I don't think so! With due respect - religion is still nothing more than a dellusion, Flight Training is real and if one is not physically, mentally, and, academically fit - I suspect that he will be back into his dellusional studies in no time. Good Luck anyway, at least we can appreciate the desire to contribute rather than be a typical Free Loader Haredi.
8. Haredim pilot
Edouard ,   Montreal Canada   (05.31.13)
Habad never refuse to serve ,they are not the problem The problem are all the others ,the one that not consider habad as ultra hortodox
9. Will he only be available 6 days a week?
Zimbi ,   NJUSA   (05.31.13)
10. core curriculum
oneatatime ,   Miami, USA   (05.31.13)
Another reason why it is imperative to broaden the core curriculum to include math and science. There are likely some brilliant minds that like this young man, needs to be exposed to these other subjects. Not everyone is cut out to be a torah scholar. There may be an Einstein or two just waiting to be identified
11. what fluff is this? Article doesn't say he was accepted....
(05.31.13)
it just says that he wants in. and between him wanting in and the IAF wanting him there is a huge difference.
12. a slow news week
david ,   new york   (05.31.13)
this is a story about one guy and he's not even haredi (sorry, chabad doesnt count. they dont live a haredi lifestyle)
13. #11
SNS   (05.31.13)
Title of article: " Youth becomes first haredi to enlist in flying school" ";an 18-year-old ultra-Orthodox youth is set to make history by being the first haredi to enlist in the IAF's hugely prestigious flying school." He has already been accepted to flight school

The navigator was not ultra-orthodox. She was dati leumi.
15. The late Lubavitcher Rebbe was very against
Dov ,   Israel   (05.31.13)
his hassidim enlisting. This youth and his father are probably a BT and are not aware of the Rebbe's ruling.
16. Kol Hakavod!
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (05.31.13)
Haratzon kovea! Congratulations to this young man. His will to serve is the deciding factor.
17. Unwarranted cynicism
Naftush ,   Israel   (05.31.13)
Most of the comments thus far reek of gratuitous cynicism. They damn haredim not only as a collective but down to the individual: he can't win. Well, the IAF can be trusted to determine if this cadet is physically fit and good enough in math. He will be available to defend Israel whenever necessary, specifically including Shabbat; this is part and parcel of enlistment in the IDF. Rabbinical rulings for 5773 (2013) are made by live rabbis, not dead or missing ones. Chabad is Chabad; let the others debate themselves to exhaustion about whether Chabad is haredi. Got it?
18. #17: you missed my thrust
david ,   new york   (05.31.13)
the reason i pointed out that chabad are not haredim (BTW: i know plenty of "modern orthodox" chabad) is not to put down haredim. its the opposite: i believe that the main purpose of pushing haredim into the army is to assimilate them out and destroy the haredi culture. those who want to do this will say "no one wants to assimilate them out", but when you talk to dati leumi (or read ynet) they only confirm their true intentions. ynet put this article out to try and show that haredim are cracking and soon their culture will be destroyed. i am only saying that this article is about 1 person and he's not even haredi. it's a made up attempt to try and dishearten haredim. if you read ynet, is living in virtual reality.
19. #15, A rebbe cannot "rule." Issuing rules is State's domain.
Michael ,   California, USA   (05.31.13)
20. David from Neb York ..you know precious little about our
Al   (05.31.13)
history. My late grandparents whom I never met, were Hassidim. My grandfather after whom I was named was a Kotzker Chossid. My late Dads father was a Munkatcher Chossid. That didnt stop them from being taken to Treblinka and Auschwitz, where they were murdered. That is our history. God helps those who help themselves. I am not a religious man, although my two sons are.(Funny I was what you call FFB.) I dont deny them their beliefs. I would not want them to force anyone to believe in what they believe in. Having said that, I find your reasoning self centered, selfish and quite frankly intolerable. You will not be there to guard the doors to heaven. I will seek entry on my own accord. In the interim I wish you a nice shabbos in the holy city of Brooklyn.
21. Excellent Chabad Pilot
Maerton Davis ,   Kfar Vradim Israel   (06.01.13)
We need a lot more like him. Torah plus a great army will keep Israel strong. Prayers alone without action will always alienate the "religious" from the Israeli people, Bnei Yaacov. Please Chabad, if you want the respect of us all, teach Torah for sure but let them physically defend us too. The Almighty will reward you.
