1. Serve or be deported.
Aharon ,   Holon, IL   (05.31.13)
No exceptions. You haredim serve the State, not the other way around.
2. No limits to stupidity!
Robert ,   Antwerp Belgium   (05.31.13)
A big headache for the army in how to make soldiers out of the kids described in the article
3. Simple solution...no welfare..end of problem
Al   (05.31.13)
Nothing like a teat being pulled out of their mouths to get the brain working. They wont be coming to me, for I stopped giving money to these impostors a long long time ago.
4. Charedi recruits
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (05.31.13)
These youths will never make good soldiers. So they should not have to serve, or do some form of national service. If they want to continue their Torah studies, fine! But they have to do it on their own dime. No more stipends -- of any sort, including for apartments and for their excessively large families. No access to Israel's health care system. Period. Time to get tough with these despicable leeches. If they riot in protest -- expel them from the country, never to return. They're far more of a headache than they are worth.
5. no service no stipends --
Galut ia ,   Selah   (05.31.13)
with the exception of the tribe of Levi ...under moses and joshua when you became 21 you were counted as one of many that could go to war ...if you fail to do that you were cut off from israel...often put to the sword....
6. As in all Socialist Communist govts
Dr. Lance Prudine ,   Cambridge U.   (05.31.13)
Women are considered whores and abused to offer men cheap sex. This is Rule #12 in the communist manifesto to take over America - and it worked well!!!!!! By using women as whores to break up church and family, the anarchists and leftists revolutionaries would sieze power. Bra burnings and useful idiot slut girls that only fucked vietnam war draft dodgers are 1 of thousands of examples. Socialist Israel only puts girls in the army to attract men who fuck and dump the poor souls.
7. Among the things clearly NOT taught in their yeshivas are ..
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (05.31.13)
They're clearly not being taught manners, respect toward their fellow Jews, or proper "derech eretz". What these young brats need is a good smack. But since that's deemed passé these days, a loss of state support might serve to wake them up. As to the suggestion that "they're the ones that guarantee the security of the state with [their] prayers", I noticed as southern Israel was being rocketed at the end of last year, they evacuated to parts in the country's center. Apparently, they didn't believe their prayers were enough to guarantee even their own safety, never mind the country's.
8. If your prayers keep us safe you can go guard near Gaza
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NYC   (05.31.13)
9. Living in a Democracy
SteveR ,   Dallas USA   (05.31.13)
The issue is not women, or math scores, or yiddish - the issue is your responsibilities to obey the law and to exist within the norms of social contract in a democracy. That is it. The Haredi both in Israel and in the US do not understand the meaning of the social contract as it exists in a democracy. There is no such thing as "two majorities" within a democracy. There is no concurrent majority. The Haredi behavior is frightening. Israel either needs to win this fight now or it needs to admit that anarchy and civil war are coming. The US had the same issue in 1860.
10. A no-nonsense drill sergeant will set 'em straight
Cameron ,   USA   (06.01.13)
11. to #4
(06.01.13)
I am ultra orthodox and served three years in the IDF. How many years did you serve?
12. These are the moderates...
Aaron Kuperman ,   Baltimore, MD   (06.01.13)
They favor peaceful civil disobedience and draft resistance. The extremists are already advocating violence, and looking for ways to ally with the Arabs. It seems that zionist militarism has finally met resistance, not for dozens of "assimilated" left wing peaceniks, but from tens of thousands of traditional Jews.
13. You don't want to serve? Fine no Welfare!
Johnny ,   TA, Israel   (06.01.13)
If you don't give don't expect to get back
14. #6
observer13 ,   Toronto, Canada   (06.01.13)
Take your boy friend's d#4k out of your brain and put it up your A8%s where it belongs. It will make you think more clearly.
15. Respect!
JW ,   Haifa   (06.01.13)
Clearly, their carefully crafted educational syllabus does not contain the basic social items such as civility, respect and humility. Maybe, the first question should be a simple multiple choice - "Do you wish to be in a position to continue to receive the unique social benefits that the state provides for you?" Yes/No
16. The benefits they receive are drawn from women's taxes too
Margie in Tel Aviv   (06.01.13)
They need to fit in with others. It can't all be one-way. They are our spoilt children unaware of the duties they owe, unaware that they need to honour their fathers and their mothers, not their fathers alone.
17. @16
JW ,   Haifa   (06.01.13)
Excellent comparison - "Spoilt Children" Is the state (or does it even want to be) a strong enough parent to prevail?
18. To: No. 6
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.01.13)
Doctor of what? Pornography films? Your language reveals your upbringing, "Doctor."
19. As if!
Michal ,   Negev, Israel   (06.01.13)
As a former Air Force mechanic, I can honestly say I'm positive that these Hareidi chnunim are unfit physically and mentally for military service. They get babied all their lives and become little black mushrooms in their yeshivot, eating at the country. These people have no place in the IDF. I would never want to have a Hareidi mama's boy in my unit. He would be a parasite.
20. To: No. 11
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.01.13)
I served five years. Do you have any more questions?
21. To: No. 11, redux
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.01.13)
Ultra-Orthodox, yet posting on Saturday, June 1. Tsk, tsk. What you are is a fraud and a phony. And, quite likely, a liar. Double tsk, tsk.
22. This week's parsha: such "high-handedness" blasphemes haShem
Israeili Jew ,   Israel   (06.01.13)
Nothing better describes the Haredim defiance of the basic tenets and principles of Torah, while claiming to be the sole intermediaries between Israel and Hashem, than the phrase b'yad ramah (with a high-hand, high-handedly). This week's parsha defines (Num. 15.30-31) those who behave b'yad ramah are commiting m'gadesh (blasphemy) against Hashem! AND further declares that, by Biblical decree (whether or not echoed by an earthly bet din) they are excised by karet!!!
23. Minesweepers
Taxpayer ,   Hod Hasharon   (06.01.13)
Since they need no training as their prayers protect them why not have them walk across mine fields to clear them - either their prayers work in which case we get cleared fields and if not then at least there are less mouths to feed
24. Traitors
Dan   (06.01.13)
The Haredim have knowingly raised a generation of traitors. If they refuse to do their national duty they must suffer the usual consequences.
25. Marks
DSV ,   Arnhem, Netherlands   (06.01.13)
"what does it matter then if my marks in the tests are low?" Well, someone needs to lick those latrines clean, right?
26. SERVE OR BE DEPORTED
DANNY TAWIL ,   ENGLAND   (06.01.13)
TO NO 1 AHARON YOU ARE ABSOLUTLY RIGHT. DANNY.
27. Why women screening officers?
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (06.01.13)
IDF is looking for problems.
28. Interesting how these anti-Hardei articles come on Fridays
Ephraim ,   Jerusalem   (06.02.13)
It is amazing to me that many, many times this and other papers put of these anti-Haredi articles before or during Shabbat. All the haters on out, but no one can reply because of Shabbat. How insanely stupid and purposely disrespectful to have a woman interview these men. People are out here always spouting that the religious have no right to tell others how to live, so what right do we have to tell them how to live? This is one of the biggest arguments the Haredim have against the draft. They have their culture and their traditions, and they do not want to be secularized in the army. Now the army hands the a PR victory with this story. They choose to have limited contact with women aside from their wives. That is their right. Why stoke the flames by making them meet with women interviewers? It is just stupid. Why not make is easier for them to join the army, no harder. Why not a man? Why not a man with a kipa? WHY NOT? Let them serve, and let them keep their ways. What's the problem?
29. Ora
Ephraim ,   Jerusalem   (06.02.13)
Ora, they do it on purpose. No respect for anything or anyone.
30. To #27: Grow up
Bob ,   Canada   (06.02.13)
There have been women in the IDF longer than there have been Haredim
